feat(games): local games and apps with running-app picker and app icons - #1245
per-target profile state, serialized profile saves with retry
hardening for /api and feedback payloads
Running-app picker and app icons
"Add game or app" lists running apps from Bridge (/v1/running-applications): foreground app first, searchable, with refresh. Scripts and launchers are left out.
Picking an app fills in the name and full path. Typing a path stays as the fallback.
a wireless and a wired report rate per game profile, and the draft view that hides onboard-profile controls a game profile can't save (cf54798)
Host bunny hop, Host side button assignments, analog (HITS) tuning, Host DPI slots and "Apply now" (f4490c5). "Apply now" now counts only a confirmed write, and its restore retries until a write lands
the F13–F24 key test (36f2ae6). F13–F24 support itself was never removed
Bridge
App icons for saved apps need the companion Bridge PR, OpenMouse-Project/OpenMouse-Bridge#45. Without it, saved apps show the generic icon and everything else works.
Checks
npm run build passes
npm test: 508 tests pass
npm run size: JS 2,951,913 / 3,200,000 bytes
Tested locally on Windows with Bridge 1.0.0-beta.19 plus the HID fix: picking a running app, saving it, and the profile page.
Add local games and apps with running-app picker, app icons, and profile ownership fixes
Adds local-application management: a LocalApplicationDialog that adds, edits, and removes local apps, picks targets from Bridge's running applications, and validates manual paths via parseLocalTarget (1024-char limit, 256-entry list limit). GamesPage replaces the custom-game flow with local apps and presets, and Bridge calls in bridge.ts add bridgeLocalApplications/saveBridgeLocalApplications plus icon URL helpers while removing all custom-game helpers.
Rewrites game-profile handling to be owner-scoped: controller.ts adds a GameProfileOwner token so draft, flash, and restore operations report stale when the device session changes, and useBridgeProfileApplier.ts scopes writes and toasts to the captured owner. GameProfilePanel saves per-device profiles with verification and retry.
Hardens the feedback API: feedback.js validates origins, webhook config, payloads, and attachments, sanitizes forwarded content, and returns 502 for failed webhook responses. New body-limit.js bounds request bodies in middleware.
Adds an animated ASCII background field (ascii.ts, AsciiField.tsx), self-hosts the DM Sans variable font, and reworks device page styling into a rail/workspace layout with container queries.
Risk: bridgeCustomGames, saveBridgeCustomGames, customGameImageUrl, saveBridgeCustomGameImage, and bridgeImageFromUrl are removed from bridge.ts, and custom-game rename/image controls and customgame.* translations are gone; any code depending on those exports will break.
…icons
Adding a local game or app no longer needs a typed full path. With Bridge
running, the add dialog lists running apps (foreground first, searchable,
refreshable, scripts and launchers left out); picking one fills the name and
full path. Manual path entry stays as the fallback.
Saved local apps show their own app icon from Bridge on the games grid and the
profile page, in place of uploaded pictures. The icon id is read from
/v1/local-applications and never written back; older Bridge builds without it
fall back to the generic icon.

Walkthrough
The pull request adds Bridge-managed local applications and connects them to device-specific game profiles. It scopes profile writes to the active device, bounds and validates feedback requests, and updates the device layout, shared visual tokens, typography, and decorative ASCII field.
Changes: Local applications and game profiles
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Bridge and local target contracts src/features/bridge/bridge.ts, src/features/games/local-applications.ts, src/features/bridge/bridge.test.ts, src/features/games/local-applications.test.ts
Bridge types and APIs support local applications. Helpers parse and validate targets, select running apps, derive identities, and match profiles. Custom-game image and API functions are removed.
The games page and dialog manage local applications alongside presets. The dialog validates and verifies saves. Local application labels and Bridge profile behavior are documented and translated. The former custom-game and image flows are removed.
Profile drafts and writes track the active client and device. Profile persistence is serialized and verified, with ownership checks, retry states, and tests for stale, failed, and partial writes. The Host-profile type augmentation is removed.

Summary
Bound request bodies in middleware functions/_lib/body-limit.js, functions/_middleware.js, test/web-security.test.ts
Middleware bounds request bodies, returns 413 for oversized bodies, and forwards the buffered request. Static-subresource detection decodes paths and excludes API routes.
The endpoint validates origin, webhook configuration, JSON and multipart payloads, attachment limits, and embed fields before forwarding. Discord non-OK responses map to 502.

Brings back the #1154 fix that came out with the #1177 revert. The mouse has
no field for the X/Y link, so a slot unlinked on purpose with equal values read
as linked again after a refresh. The choice is remembered per device and
onboard profile (localStorage `openmouse.dpi-unlinked`), and the stage editor
remounts per device and profile so rows never carry over.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Brings back #1177's per-connection rates on top of the local-app design. A
game profile being edited shows a wireless and a wired slider (when the mouse
has both); a game launch applies the rate of the connection in use, and the
restore puts back only that one.
Also brings back #1177's draft view of the onboard profile: a game profile is
never written to the mouse's stored profile, so the draft hides the per-profile
rate, DPI slot and bunny hop controls that could not save into it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…slots and Apply now
Restores the rest of #1177's game profile parity on top of the local-app
design, keeping 7eedle's game-profile ownership checks throughout:
- Host bunny hop, Host side button assignments (pressed by Bridge) and analog
(HITS) tuning are part of a game profile again; values the mouse cannot take
now are held in the draft and laid over its preview.
- Host DPI slots keep their order and X/Y link across refreshes.
- "Apply now" writes the draft to the mouse; what it replaced goes back when
the panel closes or before another mouse is selected. It writes through the
owner-checked writer, so a stale, failed or partial write is not reported
as applied, and a restore retries until a write lands.
- A game profile write never rewrites the mouse's stored HITS profile.
ButtonMap.tsx and buttons.css match main again.

Minor · Restore two setup-figure columns below the rail threshold. · device.css:123-125
Restore two setup-figure columns below the rail threshold.
The container query at device.css:123 moves the two-column rule from a viewport breakpoint to a 560px container breakpoint. At page widths above 560px, .om-setup-figures uses the four-column default. The medium rail takes 220px from the page at 760px and above. When CurrentSetupPanel shows four figures, each cell is roughly 110–140px wide. This can make Current Setup values overflow their cells.
A figure value and its unit have no whitespace between them. The unit is DPI or Hz. The browser cannot break a line between a digit and a letter, so a value such as 1,600DPI stays on one line. It can extend past the cell border into the next figure. No overflow: hidden, white-space: nowrap, or overflow-wrap rule applies to these figures, so nothing clips the overflow.
Keep the two-column layout for the page widths where four cells are too narrow. Measure the cell width at 760px to 1000px. Then set the container breakpoint in device.css:123 above that range. Do not change the four-column default at widths where the cells fit.

Guard profile writes against lost updates from other writers.
saveBridgeProfiles sends the full profile list to PUT /v1/profiles with no revision, ETag, or If-Match precondition. The panel's read-modify-write can overwrite a profile change that another writer saves between its bridgeProfiles() read and the saveBridgeProfiles call. The post-save check re-reads the list but verifies only this game/device entry, so the panel can report success while the other change is gone. The module-level profileWrites queue serializes saves only within this JavaScript context. It does not coordinate with other tabs or applications.
Mitigation needs a server-side precondition, such as a revision on /v1/profiles, or a per-profile write endpoint. Neither exists in this repository. Until then, the panel can lose a concurrent Bridge profile edit.

Minor · Hide onboard controls during a game draft, or disable them. · controller.ts:478-484
Hide onboard controls during a game draft, or disable them.
On the reviewed head, buildProfileView no longer masks onboard data during a game-profile draft. The base masked it. The head still rejects the matching onboard writes. The Games page therefore shows enabled DPI slot, button mapping, and Bunny Hop controls. Each change in these controls is rejected with a toast and does nothing.
The base code returned { ...view, entry: null, slotsAvailable: false, bunnyHopSupported: false } when a draft was open. The head returns the unmasked view. Workspace renders from that view, so the controls appear. None of the cards check gameProfileDraft to disable their controls. Writes to button assignments, Bunny Hop, and DPI slots still call blockedByGameProfileDraft(). That function shows a "not in game profile" toast and returns.
Restore the draft masking in buildProfileView, or pass a disabled state to these cards during a draft. Confirm the intent first. If the PR meant to show the onboard controls, the cards need a disabled state. The current code gives the user no visible cue before the toast.

Minor · Oversized POSTs no longer record a strike. · _middleware.js:187-189
On the reviewed head, a POST whose Content-Length exceeds the limit returns 413 from the boundedRequest catch block. That block runs before the KV guard and before any strike call. The base revision reached the Content-Length strike at functions/_middleware.js:217-220 and recorded a strike for every such POST. The head revision never reaches that check for an oversized request, so these requests add no strike. The strikes that would have led to a ban are not written.
The hypothesis is supported on the strike path. The consequence depends on condition 1 and condition 2. Condition 1 holds for the strike-recording path. Condition 2 is not established from the inspected code, so the ban-state effect remains a bounded claim.
Condition status:
Condition 1 (SECURITY_KV configured and no upstream strike for these requests): true for the middleware path. SECURITY_KV is the only KV binding read in functions/_middleware.js:192, and the code exits early without it (if (!kv) return forward();). No other code records a strike for oversized POSTs. functions/api/feedback.js:43 returns 413 without calling strike, and rg finds no strike( call outside functions/_middleware.js. I did not inspect the deployment binding itself, so the claim that KV is configured in production is unverified. Upstream WAF rules are not visible in the repository; the code only reads RATE_LIMIT_MODE.
Condition 2 (the client reaches the middleware often enough for lost strikes to change ban state): unsettled. The threshold is STRIKES_TO_BAN = 25 (functions/_middleware.js:143), and strikes expire after 7 days (functions/_middleware.js:166). Each oversized POST that previously counted now counts for nothing. Whether a real client reaches 25 such requests depends on traffic I cannot inspect. The code confirms the mechanism, not the frequency.
Additional facts:
The old Content-Length strike at line 230 is now effectively dead for declared bodies. boundedRequest rejects any Content-Length above the limit first. The limit is 16 KB for /api/comments and 8 MiB otherwise. The check on line 230 uses MAX_BODY_BYTES, so it only fires when boundedRequest has already passed. Missing Content-Length yields 0 and cannot trigger it.
The boundedRequest path does not count oversized streamed bodies either. The base code did not strike for those requests, so the change does not remove a strike there.
The rate-limit strike at line 236 is also skipped for oversized POSTs, because they return before enforceRateLimit runs. That is a second loss of strike accounting on the same trigger.
Existing tests check the 413 status (test/security-middleware.test.ts:147-150) but do not assert that a strike is recorded. No test covers the strike count for oversized POSTs.
Attribution: the change is introduced by this PR. The base revision had the strike at functions/_middleware.js:217-220, and head moves boundedRequest ahead of it.
Recommended fix: record a strike before returning 413 when boundedRequest throws BodyTooLarge on a POST. This keeps the base behavior for declared oversized bodies.
Caveat on the fix: request is still the original request inside the catch block, so clientIp and request.method are read from it. The strike write runs before the response, so it adds one KV write per oversized POST. This does not restore the rate-limit strike for those requests.

Require non-empty field names and values in the feedback validator.
text() in functions/_lib/feedback-payload.js checks only the type and the maximum length, so an empty string passes. Lines 26-27 apply it to field.name and field.value. A payload such as {"embeds":[{"fields":[{"name":"x","value":""}]}]} therefore passes local validation and is forwarded. Discord rejects the empty value. The handler then returns HTTP 502 Discord rejected the feedback. (functions/api/feedback.js:46-47), although the fault is in the client input. Minor · Add an explicit retry for failed profile loads. · GameProfilePanel.tsx:166-169
If /v1/profiles rejects while the panel is open, the catch handler sets loadError and leaves loaded false. The load effect depends only on gameIdentity(game), so a later successful request does not run it again. The panel stays mounted while selectedGame is set. App keeps GamesPage rendered while page === "games". Bridge recovery does not restore the panel. A Bridge activity change clears selectedGame and unmounts the panel before any retry could run.
Make the load effect rerun when a retry is requested, then add a retry control:
Declare const [loadAttempt, setLoadAttempt] = useState(0); next to loadError. Show a retry control while loadError is true. Its handler calls setLoadAttempt((attempt) => attempt + 1). The effect already clears loadError and loaded at the start of each run.
This behavior predates this PR. The merge base already performs one profile load with no retry. This change adds the error state without a recovery path.

Bind the profile target to the device identity, not its sidebar index.
targetIndex stores a position in devices. The load effect sets it once, and nothing re-resolves it when the device list changes. If a preceding non-active mouse is removed while the panel stays mounted, the index points to a different mouse.
Removal can run while the panel is open. Start "Forget" from the device menu, then open the Games page before the forget calls finish. The panel loads with the old list and stores the selected mouse's index. refreshSidebar() then removes the earlier entry, and the stored index now resolves to the next mouse. The removed mouse is not the open one, so the active mouse stays connected.
After that shift, target resolves to the wrong mouse, and the row at targetIndex shows as selected. toggleAutoApply, clearProfile, and the retry button call persist with targetIndex, so they write the displayed settings to the wrong mouse's Bridge profile. The displayed values still belong to the original mouse.
Store the target's identity instead of its index. Derive the index from that identity on every render. Mark list rows by identity. When the target device is no longer present, clear or reload the profile state.

Minor · Restore targetIndex when the mouse switch does not start. · GameProfilePanel.tsx:301-302
Restore targetIndex when the mouse switch does not start.
selectTarget stores the new target before it calls control.selectAuthorizedDevice. Nothing restores the target if that call returns without starting the switch. Two paths return silently before activateClientNow:
The authorized group at index is missing (src/device/controller.ts:2915).
No supported client can be created and no keyboard client is available (src/device/controller.ts:2923-2925).
In both cases mouse A stays active, but targetIndex remains on B. B then shows "Selected" (src/features/games/GameProfilePanel.tsx:382-386). Its controls stay disabled because editing requires target.selected (src/features/games/GameProfilePanel.tsx:173). Selecting B again returns early (src/features/games/GameProfilePanel.tsx:292). The user must select A to recover.
This applies only before activation starts. If a failure occurs after activateClientNow begins, it closes A and clears the active state first (src/device/controller.ts:3417-3421), so A is no longer active.
Correction: have selectAuthorizedDevice report whether the switch started. The call is currently discarded with void, so selectTarget must await that result. When the switch did not start, selectTarget should restore the previous targetIndex and the stored settings it changed earlier in the same function. Do not rely on device.selected to resync the index, because nothing updates targetIndex after load. Add a regression test for the case where the switch does not start. Minor · Cap /api/feedback JSON bodies at 64 KiB in the middleware before… · _middleware.js:184-187
Cap /api/feedback JSON bodies at 64 KiB in the middleware before buffering.
The middleware reads the request body up to 8 MiB for every route except /api/comments. It does this before the feedback endpoint applies its 64 KiB limit to non-multipart requests. A JSON feedback body between 64 KiB and 8 MiB is fully buffered and copied, and only then rejected with 413. Requests from banned or rate-limited clients are buffered too, because the body read runs before the ban and rate-limit checks.
Before this change, the middleware only rejected a declared Content-Length above 8 MiB. It did not read bodies. The base feedback handler forwarded request.body directly.
Apply the byte limit by route and content type in the middleware. Use 64 KiB for /api/feedback requests that are not multipart/form-data, and keep 8 MiB for multipart requests. Derive the multipart check the same way functions/api/feedback.js does, so both layers agree. The endpoint currently returns 415 for an unsupported content type. An oversized body of that type would return 413 from the middleware first, so the status for that case changes.
The existing test/feedback-security.test.ts calls onRequest directly and does not run the middleware. It therefore does not cover this buffering path. A regression test that runs the middleware and the feedback handler together should assert that the body is not fully consumed, not only that the final status is 413.

Minor · Validate embed timestamps against the ISO 8601 format before… · feedback-payload.js:37-40
functions/_lib/feedback-payload.js:37-40 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Validate embed timestamps against the ISO 8601 format before forwarding.
The timestamp check at functions/_lib/feedback-payload.js:37-40 uses only Date.parse. Discord documents the embed timestamp field as an ISO 8601 timestamp. Date.parse also accepts strings outside that format, because the ECMAScript specification allows implementation-specific fallback parsing for non-ISO input. The handler forwards such a value unchanged.
When Discord rejects the forwarded value, functions/api/feedback.js:46-47 returns a 502 "Discord rejected the feedback." response. A client input error is then reported as a gateway failure. It should return the 400 "Invalid feedback." response instead.

Add a test that pins the rail breakpoints to the device.css container queries.
The geometry test checks rail-w and rail-w-medium against railWide and railMedium. It does not read railWideFrom (1000) or railMediumFrom (760) from src/styles/visual-contract.json. It also does not read the @container om-device rules in src/styles/device.css. A change to either breakpoint in device.css leaves every assertion in this file passing. No other test in the repository reads these fields or breakpoint values. The gap is in coverage of current behavior, not in the current layout.

focused on both breakpoint values.
The test the rendered sweep uses the native cubic curve checks only the timing function. Its regex at src/shared/ascii.test.ts:91 has no end anchor and no ; terminator. An infinite token added after cubic-bezier(...) still matches, and assert.ok(curve, ...) still passes. The selector check at line 83 also still matches. The message one-shot row sweep on line 92 implies a one-shot check that the test does not perform. DESIGN.md:132 allows no loops outside the add-device crossfade, so a repeating row sweep would break that rule without failing any test.
Match the full declaration and assert the tokens after the curve:
This check also fails on any later change to the trailing tokens. That is intended, because the rule currently has no iteration count and any change to it should be reviewed.

⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Editing writes a replacement local target under the same ID, but this flow does not update existing BridgeProfile.application metadata. If Bridge matches stored profile metadata rather than resolving localId dynamically, old profiles retain the former path or activation.
Its existing mouse profiles continue activating for the old target or fail to activate for the edited one.
This can occur when: A user changes a target's executable path or activation after saving mouse profiles for it.

Removal sends only the shortened local-application list; the supplied browser flow does not delete linked profiles. The promised deletion depends on an unseen Bridge-side cascade.
If Bridge does not cascade, orphaned profiles remain stored and may reattach if the target ID is restored.
This can occur when: A user removes a local target that has saved profiles on one or more mice.

The middleware fully reads and buffers up to 8 MiB before checking bans, suspicious URLs, origin, or rate limits. A request those checks would reject can consume its full body and hold the handler open first.
Rejected traffic consumes avoidable bandwidth, memory, and request time, weakening the protection supplied by the subsequent checks.
This can occur when: A banned or rate-limited client repeatedly sends large or slowly streamed requests, including requests to otherwise exempt static paths.

Relink legacy custom-game profiles to local application IDs.
Condition 1 is established for profiles created before this change. The base implementation stored and matched custom-game profiles by name, while the new local profile format uses localId. No migration or relinking path exists in the reviewed frontend.
Condition 2 is established. GameProfilePanel filters loaded profiles with matchesGame before restoring settings. A legacy profile without application.localId therefore fails the local-game match and the panel opens with empty settings. The old profile remains stored because saves replace only profiles accepted by matchesGame.

Two tabs can read the same list at LocalApplicationDialog.tsx:85. Each tab then saves a full replacement built from its own snapshot at line 98. saveBridgeLocalApplications sends the complete array with no revision or conditional header. The later write can drop an entry that the other tab saved.
Hold one lock for the whole transaction: the read, the duplicate and 256-entry checks, the write, and the verification read. Acquire the lock before the first read. Reset saving.current and the busy state on every exit path, including a failed or never-invoked lock request. Do not rely on a finally that exists only inside the lock callback. Wrap the whole lock request in try/finally, or set the busy state inside the lock. Either way, a failed acquisition must not leave the dialog stuck.
Web Locks serialize only tabs of the same browser origin. Other browser profiles and other Bridge clients are not covered. Only a revision or conditional check in Bridge's PUT /v1/local-applications protects all writers. That change belongs in the Bridge repository.
Add a regression test with two dialog instances that share one stored list. Start both saves before either write resolves. Each save adds a different entry. Assert that the final stored list contains both entries. Use a navigator.locks stub that serializes callbacks by name. Without serialization, the second full-array write removes the first entry. Add a second test where lock acquisition fails and assert that the busy state resets.
The impact is minor. The trigger needs near-simultaneous saves, and a lost entry can be re-added.

Serialize the local-application read-modify-write in the flow using
bridgeLocalApplications and saveBridgeLocalApplications, holding one Web Lock
across the initial read, validation checks, write, and verification read. Ensure
saving.current and the busy state reset on every exit, including lock
acquisition failure or a callback that never runs, by wrapping the full lock
request in try/finally. Add regression tests for concurrent dialog saves
preserving both entries and for busy-state reset when lock acquisition fails.

Hide the HITS card while a game-profile draft is active.
In a game-profile draft, the HITS card shows enabled Apply buttons. Both handlers, applyLogitechAnalogButton and applyLogitechAnalogButtons, return at blockedByGameProfileDraft(). The click shows the "not in game profile" info toast and saves nothing. With instant flash on, each HITS step calls the same guarded handler through setAnalogTuningValue, so each step shows the toast. Analog tuning is not a game-profile field, so the profile save never succeeds. Device-level HITS editing is not affected.
Removing only the Apply buttons does not stop the instant-flash step calls. Hiding the card in drafts stops both paths. This also removes the HitsPresetscanAdjust={!showApply} setting in drafts, because that setting lives inside the card.

Update the HITS card’s visibility condition in the Superstrike flow to hide the
entire card whenever snapshot.gameProfileDraft is active, rather than only
hiding Apply controls through showApply. This must also prevent instant-flash
steps and HitsPresets from appearing in drafts while preserving device-level
HITS editing.

Major · Do not restore a mouse’s stash to a different active device. · controller.ts:1650-1651
src/device/controller.ts:1650-1651 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift
Do not restore a mouse’s stash to a different active device.
deviceStorageKey() does not distinguish identical mice. Bridge devices already expose device.key, but the restore map ignores it. Native WebHID also cannot distinguish serial-less identical mice.
The explicit target-switch path restores before selecting the next device. However, the panel’s unmount cleanup can call restoreGameProfileApply() after disconnect handling has automatically activated mouse B. The current-owner check then accepts B’s current session, because the restore entry does not retain A’s owner or physical identity. A’s values can be written to B and A’s stash can be deleted.
Store the source owner and a transport identity with each restore entry. Require the current owner and identity to match before writing. Use Bridge device.key where available. For transports without a stable physical identity, retain the stash and skip restoration after the active device changes.

two windows of one app the one in front is kept. The README now says what the

App icons for saved apps need the companion Bridge PR, OpenMouse-Project/OpenMouse-Bridge#45. Without it, saved apps show the generic icon and everything else works.
