Companion to OpenMouse-Project/openmouse#1245. Fixes the HID multi-path refusal for serial-bearing devices and serves icons for saved local apps (iconId on /v1/local-applications).

Note

Fix HID multi-path handling and add path-derived icons for local apps

  • Fixes HID devices with multiple open paths: candidates with multiple paths are accepted when all interfaces share one non-empty serial, and reports can now be sent through any open path (declared paths tried first)
  • If a HID reader thread fails to spawn, HidSession.listen now stops already-started readers before returning the error
  • Local applications now get an iconId derived from their path in GET/PUT /v1/local-applications responses via LocalApplicationEntry
  • Icon cache keeps icons for saved (not running) local applications; removed saved apps have their icons pruned, and failed extraction attempts are not cached
  • Risk: multi-path HID candidates that previously failed inspection now pass when serials match — see shares_verified_serial in hid.rs; application_icon in service.rs may attempt icon extraction for apps that are not running

Macroscope summarized 3d103f2.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Local application responses now include an icon identifier, and icons for saved applications remain available when those applications are closed.
  • Bug Fixes
    • HID devices with multiple paths can now send reports when the paths share a verified serial number. Reports are sent through matching paths when available, with fallback attempts across paths otherwise. A report succeeds when at least one send succeeds.

98294bc keyed each HID candidate by path and refused any candidate with
more than one path ("refusing multi-path access", plus a matching
"refusing report fan-out" guard). ed5bcd9 then made a non-empty serial
the grouping identity, so every top-level collection of a device with a
serial lands in one candidate again. On Windows each collection is its
own path, so "list" failed for every serial-bearing multi-collection
mouse.

Allow several paths when every interface reports the same non-empty
serial, and keep refusing otherwise. The report path already routes to
the path that declares the report ID, so its guard now only rejects a
device with no open path.

GET /v1/local-applications (and the PUT response) now gives each entry
an `iconId`, computed with applications::icon_id(path). The field is
response-only; saved lists are accepted with or without it.

GET /v1/applications/{iconId}/icon serves a saved local application's
icon whether or not it is running: on a cache miss it is extracted from
the saved path, and prune_application_icons keeps saved applications'
icons. It still 404s when extraction fails or off Windows.

Walkthrough

Local-application responses now include path-derived icon IDs, and saved applications can supply icons while closed. HID handling now permits multiple paths when they share a verified serial and sends reports across eligible paths.

Changes: Local Application Icons

Layer / File(s) Summary
Path-derived icon IDs in responses
src/applications.rs, src/api.rs, tests/backend_local_profiles.rs
Local-application GET and PUT responses include an iconId derived from each application path. Tests check the returned IDs and that a served list containing them can be submitted.
Icon retention and extraction for saved applications
src/service.rs
Icon pruning retains icons for saved local applications. On a cache miss, the service extracts and caches the icon for a matching saved application.

Multi-Path HID Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Verified multi-path devices and report sending
src/hid.rs
Candidate inspection permits multiple unique paths only when they share the same non-empty serial. Report sending uses paths that declare the requested report when available, and otherwise attempts all open paths.

Multi-path HID commands may be duplicated or acknowledged on the wrong path. Saved application icons may also remain available after removal or remain unavailable after a temporary extraction failure. Resolve the HID routing issues before merging.

🟠 High src/hid.rs:918

For serial-bearing Razer devices, inspect_candidate leaves the report maps empty, so declared_path_exists is false and send_report sends the frame to every open path; unrelated interfaces receive the command, and failures are hidden whenever any path succeeds. Keep multi-path sends rejected when no declared report path identifies a destination, or resolve a single destination before writing.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — The PR adds saved-application icon serving and changes HID devices with shared serials to use multi-path report routing. An unresolved routing case can fall back to an unrelated interface and acknowledge the command incorrectly, so the HID behavior needs human review.

Reject ambiguous report IDs instead of sending to every matching path.

If two paths declare the same report_id, the existing loop now sends one command to both paths. A shared non-empty serial does not make report IDs unique across paths. A device can therefore receive two writes for one sendReport or sendFeatureReport command. Select one path using an explicit ownership rule, or return an ambiguity error when the command cannot identify one.

Do not acknowledge a report sent through the wrong path.

If a multi-path device opens only some paths, open still succeeds. When the unavailable path is the only one that declares a requested report ID, declared_path_exists is false for the remaining paths. The fallback then tries those paths and can return success without sending the report through its declaring path. Keep the opaque-descriptor fallback for a sole open path, but require an identified destination for a multi-path device.

Review follow-up on the multi-path fix. A device opened with several paths
now sends each report to exactly one of them: the paths that declare the
report (or every path, for Razer, whose descriptors are not parsed) are tried
in order and the first that takes it is the only one written, so one command
never reaches the device twice.

start_reader stores the stop flag before spawning, and a later spawn failure
stops and joins the readers already running instead of leaving them to block
session cleanup.

Replacing the saved local applications prunes the icon cache, so a removed
app's icon is no longer served. A failed extraction is not cached, so a path
that comes back later gets its icon, and an icon read while the list changed
is cached only if a saved app still owns its id.
