Note

Fix duplicated HID devices by grouping on serial or collection interface

  • grouped_device_key in hid.rs now prefers a non-empty serial, then a parsed collection interface from the Windows \?\hid# path, then falls back to the raw path. New collection_interface helper parses and lowercases those paths to build the interface identity.
  • inspect_candidate no longer rejects multi-path candidates whose paths lack a shared verified serial (shares_verified_serial and its test are removed). Paths without parsed descriptor collections now get usage metadata from their matching DeviceInfo entries.
  • Device listing compares each candidate's stored path set with the current one: if it differs, it re-inspects a closed device or calls recover on an open device.
  • Behavioral Change: devices with identical vendor/product IDs and matching collection interfaces now group together even without a serial; unparsed paths still group by path.

Macroscope summarized ce18958.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • HID devices without serial numbers can now be grouped more accurately on Windows, including related device collections.
    • Device listings refresh closed entries when the available paths change, while keeping open devices available.

HID grouping now uses serial numbers, parsed Windows collection parents, or individual paths to distinguish devices. Listing also reinspects uncached candidates and closed candidates whose path counts differ from the current inventory.

Changes: HID device grouping

Layer / File(s) Summary
Select and apply grouped device identity
src/hid.rs
grouped_device_key now prefers a nonempty serial, then a parsed Windows collection interface, then the individual path. Multi-path candidates are no longer rejected for lacking a shared nonempty serial. The related comment now describes serial- or Windows-interface-based grouping.
Reinspect candidates during listing
src/hid.rs
Listing reinspects a candidate when it is not cached, or when it is closed and its path count differs from the current inventory. Open candidates are retained.

The new HID grouping can leave devices with stale or missing collection paths after hot-plug or re-enumeration. As a result, reports or input readers may not reach a newly appeared collection. These are edge-case failures in the device refresh path rather than broad outages, but they should be addressed before merge.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at ce18958

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused HID bug fix that groups Windows collections correctly and refreshes open handles when enumeration paths change. Recovery failures are propagated, and the implementation remains contained to the existing HID session code without schema, security, or infrastructure impact.

Apply the collection fallback per path.

The new grouping can combine paths without serial numbers. If descriptor inspection fails for one path but succeeds for another, collections is nonempty and the failed path's usage is omitted from the device summary. Add the DeviceInfo fallback for each path whose descriptor cannot be inspected.

Update the collection-building logic guarded by `collections.is_empty()` to
apply the `DeviceInfo` fallback separately for each path whose descriptor cannot
be inspected, so one path’s successful inspection does not suppress another
path’s usage in the device summary.

Compare path sets, not path counts.

If one collection disappears and another appears under the same group identity, the path count can remain unchanged. list then retains the old path, and a later open can fail or omit the new collection. Compare the actual cached and current path sets.

Reconcile path changes for open devices.

If another collection appears after a device opens, this condition retains the old candidate and open handles. Subsequent lists and report operations cannot use the new collection. Reconcile changed paths for open devices, including their readers, without discarding healthy handles.
