feat(vermeer): support Helm credentials and safe Worker reconnection - #20
Deploy authenticated Vermeer with Helm and Hubble using mounted credentials and an automatic service token, and keep distributed Workers usable after process or Pod replacement.
Scope and review map
This PR contains two concerns: deployment authentication required by Helm, and Worker reconnection fixes found during Kubernetes acceptance. The latter is a separate stability concern: a delayed EOF could remove a replacement peer and make reload fail or panic; blocking bootstrap dials could also wait indefinitely.

The signing factor, human administrator password and Schema credentials have different roles. Helm generates a 6-character administrator password in easy or 16 in strict, reusing existing Secrets on upgrades and mode changes. Hubble receives a service-token file; the short native password is used only to obtain a UI session.

Loading
Bootstrap connection attempts have a bounded timeout, defaulting to 5 seconds. Worker peer cleanup checks owner plus stream generation; Master cleanup likewise checks its captured Worker session and stream context. Acceptance verifies re-registration, explicit reload and computation; persistent storage does not promise recovery of active tasks or in-memory results.
Main Changes
Package a secure-only native vermeer-token helper. It reads the signing factor from a file and can write a silent, atomic 0600 token file. File-backed Masters use versioned HMAC-SHA256, authenticate all identity fields, reject legacy signatures and fail before listening when credentials are invalid. File-backed signing factors require at least 16 characters. The source-only legacy tool retains its historical interface.
Support an independent short administrator password file for native UI login. It issues a 24-hour HttpOnly session; the short password is rejected as an API Bearer credential. Existing opaque-token login and Hubble service tokens continue to work. Protect native Worker/Master metadata routes and reject malformed or unregistered Worker identities before entering Master task streams. Login now gives explicit credential errors without changing HTTP 401.
Add Worker Schema username/password-file configuration, preserve JSON credentials and enforce trusted PD addresses for both paths.
Bound peer connection attempts and make Master/Worker stream cleanup conditional on its registration and stream generation, preventing old disconnects from deleting replacement connections.
Reuse one bounded real-image smoke in native CI and the official image publisher; document credentials, rotation and recovery. Remove the temporary public SARIF diagnostic upload.
Verifying these changes
At 2678ff9, build, Docker runtime smoke, license and CodeQL checks pass on both org and ASF PRs. Relevant complete Worker and Master worker/service race suites pass.
Final runtime code 7ca4dfe (identical runtime source in 2678ff9) passes all nine Hubble algorithms in single-Worker and three-Worker deployments. Independent PageRank, SSSP and degree oracles pass.
Same-IP Worker restart, Worker Pod replacement and Master replacement each pass explicit reload and distributed PageRank checks. These checks do not claim in-memory task/result recovery.
Browser checks cover native short-password login, Hubble administrator/observer permissions, load/reload, running-task cancellation and 1000+1 result pagination; unloading is verified through Hubble's authenticated API.
The reusable smoke checks actual production UI assets, executable/non-root token helper, v2 signatures, 0600 output, bounded invalid-credential startup, wrong/anonymous credentials, 24-hour cookies and long-lived service-token access.
Final source 30b67d9 passes org native build, real-image smoke, license and CodeQL checks. Production-browser verification covers wrong-password 401 without a cookie, server error text, network fallback and successful HttpOnly login/reload. Relevant auth/helper/Master tests and independent review pass.
All five org inline threads are closed: four fixes verified; the additional login rate-limit/backoff/lockout system was explicitly declined as outside this integration. No CodeQL query suppression was added.
The full go test -tags=dev ./... command retains two failures reproduced at unchanged base 0b7d97c: GraphData Save/Load fixture setup and the legacy scheduler test's missing functional.HealthCheck. The production and credential suites above pass.

Helm pins this new digest. Its amd64 image passed an isolated Kubernetes Master/Worker registration, 6-character native login, packaged helper, CSV load and PageRank oracle, and native browser login checks. feat(vermeer): support file credentials for Helm deployment
feat(vermeer): support Helm credentials and safe Worker reconnection
Oct 28, 2026
Both findings from the independent review were fixed after the score/comment was published. Org #20 and ASF apache#367 now share exact head ceaba5eab1ca6becde681c86173d0f231e5a1d01.
Applied
File-backed signing factors now require at least 16 Unicode characters, with exact-boundary, short ASCII/Unicode, invalid UTF-8 and whitespace regression coverage. README and runtime errors are synchronized and recommend the existing 32-random-byte generation path.
Master gRPC now installs one stream interceptor for LoadGraphTask, ComputeTask and SuperStep. It requires exactly one canonical non-empty worker_name and an existing Worker registration before invoking handlers, returning InvalidArgument / FailedPrecondition instead of allowing an index panic or unknown-worker dispatch state.
Added focused metadata tests for missing, empty, padded, duplicate and unknown Worker identities; unrelated RPCs remain unaffected.
Compared with the reviewed 2678ff9, the fix set changes six files: 2 small source files, 2 new focused tests, README and the Master server option. The prior intermediate head already completed the Go build and deployment-credential test stage successfully; final exact-head org and ASF Vermeer/CodeQL/license runs are currently in progress.
Post-fix provisional score: 8.6 / 10, pending final exact-head CI and publication of a new immutable multi-platform image from ceaba5e. The older helm-2678ff91b56a image must not be presented as containing these fixes.
Final exact-head CI update for ceaba5e: org and ASF Vermeer CI, license checker, and CodeQL all completed successfully. The source-side post-fix score is therefore finalized at 8.6 / 10. No source blocker from this review remains; the remaining gate is cross-repository publication of a new immutable image from ceaba5e, followed by the Helm digest/provenance update and final deployment validation.
dialCtx, cancel := context.WithTimeout(ctx, timeout)
defer cancel()
- options = append(options, grpc.WithBlock(), grpc.WithIdleTimeout(0))- return grpc.DialContext(dialCtx, target, options...)+ options = append(options, grpc.WithIdleTimeout(0))+ conn, err := grpc.NewClient(target, options...)+ if err != nil {+ return nil, err+ }+ conn.Connect()+ for {+ state := conn.GetState()+ if state == connectivity.Ready {+ return conn, nil+ }+ if state == connectivity.Shutdown || !conn.WaitForStateChange(dialCtx, state) {+ _ = conn.Close()+ if err := dialCtx.Err(); err != nil {+ return nil, err+ }+ return nil, fmt.Errorf("grpc connection to %s shut down", target)+ }+ }
grpc.NewClient 默认使用 dns resolver,grpc.DialContext 默认使用 passthrough。如果 target 是不带 scheme 的 host:port,需要确认解析行为一致。基于 learnings:“In Go gRPC code, flag usage of the deprecated grpc.Dial (and grpc.DialContext)… Recommend grpc.NewClient instead”,以及 “for connection timing/timeout control use grpc.WithConnectParams or explicitly call conn.Connect(ctx)”。

Cross-repository documentation sync: the paired Helm final head 346f564 restored 16-character generated Vermeer/SeaTunnel administrator credentials in both easy and strict modes. The sentence in this PR body that still says Helm generates 6 characters in easy mode is now stale; treat the source/runtime code and the Helm apache#346 description as authoritative until that prose is refreshed. This is documentation-only and does not change the finalized 8.6/10 source score.
