feat(peering): sync configured peers over NIP-77 and a live feed - #1043
This PR adds an outbound peering-sync worker that reads each configured peer's NIP-11 peering scopes, authenticates with NIP-42, reconciles history over NIP-77, and keeps a live subscription for the same scopes. Missing events are fetched by id and verified before upsert; live events are broadcast to local subscribers. Per-peer sync state (last reconciliation, lag, missing count, errors) is exposed in the admin console and diagnostics export.
Non-functional change (docs, style, minor refactor)

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Configured peering peers now synchronize their advertised scopes, retrieve missing events, and maintain a live feed. Peers must advertise and enable NIP-77.
The Operations view, admin peering endpoint, and diagnostics now show per-peer sync status, including lag and missing events.
During peering synchronization, events from vanished authors are skipped and applicable vanish requests are applied.
Bug Fixes
NIP-11 lookups now reject relay addresses that resolve to non-public network addresses.
Documentation
Updated peering guidance to explain automatic synchronization, peer requirements, and status reporting.

Walkthrough
This change adds outbound peering synchronization. It introduces peer advertisement parsing, NIP-77 reconciliation, live event delivery, per-peer sync-state storage, and admin surfaces that show peer status and diagnostics.
Adds peering types, advertisement parsing and fetch rules, enabled-peer filtering, scope-to-filter conversion, and NIP-11 address blocking. Documentation and tests describe the same outbound sync contract.
Adds the outbound WebSocket connection for Negentropy reconciliation, requested-event fetching, persistent subscriptions, and socket lifecycle handling. Tests cover reconciliation, event fetching, live events, byte limits, and peer errors.
Adds the peering-sync worker, peer sessions, event persistence rules, worker startup, and worker routing. It also adds batch vanish handling in event import and the tests that cover worker and import behavior.
Adds Redis-backed sync-state storage, the admin peering endpoint, diagnostics export, and the Operations view. Tests cover state storage, row merging, endpoint output, and factory reuse.
cameri/nostream#1030: This PR builds the peering auth contract that the new peering-sync worker uses.
cameri/nostream#1030: The new worker and admin paths extend the peer settings and authentication flow added there.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 25d57
This adds outbound peer sync. The integration test command currently fails in CI and needs a one-line fix. Vanish requests received from peers may not be applied correctly, and the relay URL used for them can go stale after a settings reload. Deployments using an HTTP proxy may lose the private-address protection on peer fetches. These should be resolved or explicitly accepted before merge.
Security architecture risk: High · up to 25d57
Automated peer ingestion introduces material privacy risk around author erasure. Target validation, concurrent writes, and relay identity changes can leave deletion behavior inconsistent. Network destination protection also remains conditional when requests use an environment-configured proxy. Signature and scope checks substantially limit unauthorized mutations, but do not resolve these lifecycle issues.
Retained concerns
High · security · observed: The new peer erasure path inherits a preexisting incompatible kind-62 target validator. The helper recognizes r tags rather than the valid relay tag identified by the retained finding, and requires every extracted target to match. A valid request can therefore be stored without executing deletion or setting vanish state. The helper already affected direct publishing at the base; this PR newly uses it for automated peer ingestion and its advertised erasure contract.
High · security · inferred: Author erasure is not serialized with all peer writes. A persistence call can observe a non-vanished author, retain that result within its batch, and insert a previously absent event after another call has deleted the author's events and set vanish state. The worker deliberately overlaps live ingestion and history reconciliation. Deletion, request creation, and vanish-state updates are also separate operations, allowing partial completion. Similar ordering existed in direct publishing, but this PR adds concurrent peer-import paths without a shared author-level transition boundary.
Medium · security · inferred: The worker captures the local relay URL when constructing a session's persister. Settings reloads do not replace sessions unless the configured peer key or peer URL changes. Consequently, even helper-recognized erasure targets remain authorized against the previous local URL after a local identity change, while requests for the current URL can be ignored. Direct publishing instead checks current settings. The practical trigger requires a settings change; this is not arbitrary attacker control of configuration.
Medium · security · inferred: The new advertisement fetcher inherits a conditional destination-validation bypass through environment-configured proxies. Both request paths supply safeNip11Lookup without disabling automatic proxy routing. With a reachable, permitted proxy that resolves the destination itself, lookup validation can apply to the proxy rather than the peer hostname, leaving private destinations behind that proxy outside the intended check. The existing probe already had proxy-sensitive exposure at the base; the PR adds the recurring configured-peer caller rather than introducing the original weakness. Exploitability depends on proxy configuration and reachability, which were not supplied.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A configured peer endpoint can select and deliver valid signed events within its advertised scopes, affecting the local event store, author vanish state, and live subscribers. Event verification prevents that endpoint from simply forging another author's deletion authority. Conditional SSRF exposure extends only to destinations reachable through the effective request route; deployment-specific network reach was not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The supplied security assessment retains findings for kind-62 targeting and proxy-sensitive destination validation. The target helper and the original probe exposure predate this PR. Their relevance here is the newly added ingestion and discovery lifecycle, not a claim that the PR introduced those original conditions.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Outbound AUTH proves the local relay's identity to the remote endpoint; it is not proof that the endpoint owns the configured peer pubkey. The optional advertised self comparison is an assertion check, not a cryptographic binding. Configured URL and transport trust therefore remain important; no external key-binding mechanism was supplied.
observed — Destination controls reject unsafe literal URLs, reject blocked resolved addresses, check redirect URLs, and limit response size and redirects. These are meaningful countercontrols for direct requests, but address-classification tests do not establish protection when a proxy performs destination resolution.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Duplicate-row protection is narrower than erasure-transition idempotency. Repeated requests can repeat deletion and state updates, while a failure between those operations can leave inconsistent state. Reconciliation based on missing event IDs is not demonstrated to repair every case where the request was stored but its vanish-state update failed.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Define one author-level erasure protocol shared by ingestion paths: protocol-correct targeting against current local identity, serialization of vanish transitions with competing writes, and durable recovery independent of whether the request event already exists. Fence or await in-flight mutations during session revocation and shutdown.
proposed — Make proxy routing an explicit part of the destination-security contract: either disable automatic environment proxies for these fetches or require equivalent destination filtering at the proxy. Document whether configured URL and TLS trust are sufficient for remote identity, or require proof of the configured key when stronger identity is intended.

Stop a peer session when its peer is disabled or removed.
216-229: Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Stop a peer session when its peer is disabled or removed.
runLoop() checks isStillConfigured() only before each connection attempt. A connected session does not reach that check until its socket closes. While the socket stays open, queueEvent() keeps accepting live events, and the periodic reconcile() keeps fetching and accepting events. A peer that was disabled or removed in settings can keep feeding events into the relay until the connection closes.
Add the configuration check to the two paths that accept events. Each check calls stop(), which closes the socket and ends runLoop().

Review comment at @src/app/peering-sync-worker.ts around lines 216 - 229:
Update reconcile() and queueEvent() to check isStillConfigured() before fetching
or accepting events; when the peer is no longer configured, call stop() and
return so the active session ends without processing further events.

Cache isVanished results per author within one persister call.
isVanished runs one repository query for every event. A backfill batch has up to 500 events, and an initial sync can have millions. Many events share an author. Keep a Map<string, boolean> for the duration of the call. Set the entry to true when a kind-62 event for that author is processed.

Declare const vanishedCache = new Map<string, boolean>() next to regularEvents. Add vanishedCache.set(event.pubkey, true) after setVanished in the vanish branch.

Cache `isVanished` results by author for the duration of the persister call,
reusing each cached boolean before querying `options.userRepository` for the
author again. When processing a kind-62 event and applying `setVanished`, update
the same cache entry to true so later events for that author are skipped.

Refresh the relay URL used for vanish requests.

Refresh the relay URL used for vanish requests.
The session captures info.relay_url at startup. If settings reload with a new relay URL, the session remains active and still checks requests against the old URL. A request for the old URL can then delete the author’s events here, while a request for the new URL is ignored. Read the current URL when processing each request, or replace the session when it changes. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Review comment at @src/app/peering-sync-worker.ts at line 156:
Update the vanish-request handling that uses relayUrl so it reads the current
settings().info?.relay_url for each request, rather than retaining the startup
value; preserve the existing request-validation and event-deletion behavior for
the current relay URL.
