Linear: https://linear.app/broomva/issue/BRO-3410 (follow-up of BRO-3406, https://github.com/broomva/workspace/pull/1114). Upstream follow-up: https://linear.app/broomva/issue/BRO-3413.

Why

hooks/ask-origin-stamp-hook.sh runs bstack's vendored scripts/ask_ledger.py. That copy predated workspace#1114:

  • its stamp took only the flock, so it could race an owner's answer (the Paseo plugin and Maestro take the control-interface spec's §5.5 mkdir lock);
  • it overwrote an unverified Maestro origin ({via: maestro, session, verified: false}), so the owner's answer would route to whichever session ran the hook.

What (v0.51.0)

scripts/ask_ledger.py is broomva/workspace@1e4de23a6's file byte for byte, plus marked BSTACK-ONLY blocks and lines:

  • provenance;
  • the python3 -I import shim;
  • the directory sweep (validate --all, open --all);
  • archive refused, exit 2 (the workspace's copy reads a bare #N as broomva/workspace#N);
  • repo_of resolving a ledger under .broomva/asks (the registry's home; BRO-3413 takes it upstream).

tests/test_ask_ledger.py:

  • The pin strips the BSTACK-ONLY text and requires the upstream file's sha256, with a positive control.
  • An autouse fixture puts every test's §5.5 lock under a scratch root.
  • Hook-path tests (python3 -I … stamp):
    • a stamp, with or without --force/--ask, leaves a Maestro origin alone; only --ask A1 --force replaces it;
    • a stamp under a held lock exits 75 and writes nothing;
    • archive is refused and writes nothing;
    • both asks homes resolve their repo.

It's a minor bump because validate is stricter: the decision layer is required for open asks raised on or after 2026-09-21, as the workspace already requires. CHANGELOG has the migration notes.

Evidence

  • pytest tests/test_ask_ledger.py: 140 passed. tests/ask-ledger.test.sh 0 failed; ask-origin-stamp-hook 8 passed; hook-python-isolation 56 passed.
  • The workspace's own suite at 1e4de23a6 against this file fails only on its tests that read the workspace's shipped .control/ ledgers, plus test_stamp_and_archive_exit_75_on_a_busy_lock, whose archive half bstack refuses.
  • Mutants:
    • the old vendored copy fails the 3 hook tests;
    • excluding the pin, these are killed: _maestro_origin → False, _locked_rw without spec_lock, the sweep dispatch removed, the archive refusal removed, the .broomva line removed.

P20 round ledger (pr-bstack-145)

Round Head Stratum A (Codex gpt-5.6-terra) Stratum B (fresh Claude, ran everything) Result
1 952d51a 3: MAJOR archive bare #N → broomva/workspace; MAJOR repo_of ignores .broomva/asks; MINOR live lock root in tests 8 PASS: MINORs live lock root, workspace defaults, validate stricter → minor bump FAIL; fixed in e0454e6, c67796a, 81fdc56
2 81fdc56 running 8 PASS: round-1 findings verified fixed; MINORs stale PR body + changelog exception, NITs provenance comment pending A

…a6 — v0.50.1 (BRO-3410)

The stamp hook runs bstack's copy, which predated workspace#1114: its stamp
took only the flock (racing an owner's answer under the §5.5 lock) and
overwrote an unverified Maestro origin. The file is now the workspace's byte
for byte plus marked BSTACK-ONLY blocks (the python3 -I import shim and the
directory sweep). The drift pin strips those and requires the upstream
sha256; two hook-path tests cover the Maestro origin and the busy lock.

📝 Walkthrough

The release version changes from 0.50.0 to 0.50.1. The changelog describes the ask-ledger vendoring sync. Tests now check the vendored-file digest and hook-stamp behavior with existing origins and a held spec lock.

Describe both workspace-suite failure causes.

The entry attributes all three failures only to tests that read shipped .control/ ledgers. The reported results also identify a missing preauth file outside the workspace. State both causes, or explain why the preauth failure is covered by the .control/ ledger description.

P20 r1 Stratum B MINORs: the suite took the live §5.5 lock root; the

P20 r1 Stratum A MAJORs: archive reads a bare #N as broomva/workspace#N
(unsafe outside that repo), and repo_of knew only .control/asks. Two
marked BSTACK-ONLY lines with tests (both mutation-killed); upstream
repo_of is BRO-3413. The strip still equals workspace@1e4de23a6.
