Resyncs bstack's vendored scripts/ask_ledger.py (the live ask-origin stamp hook's copy) to broomva/workspace@3e1e37575, the merge of https://github.com/broomva/workspace/pull/1132 (BRO-3421). v0.51.1.

What

  • Upstream changes applied by a 3-way merge (git merge-file bstack@main, workspace@1e4de23a6, workspace@3e1e37575); one adjacency conflict (the BSTACK-ONLY sweep block next to upstream's new _seconds) kept both sides.
  • BSTACK-ONLY blocks unchanged except the provenance line (new pin).
  • tests/test_ask_ledger.py: _UPSTREAM_SHA → 3e1e37575…, _UPSTREAM_SHA256 → 943f984c…

Evidence

  • The file minus its BSTACK-ONLY blocks is byte-identical to workspace@3e1e37575 (_upstream_of(text) == upstream: True; sha256 943f984c2e14…). The pin test enforces this.
  • python3 -m pytest -q tests/test_ask_ledger.py: 140 passed.
  • Live behaviour under python3 -I: a non-UTF-8 ledger → error: … is not UTF-8 text (byte 12), exit 2; a FIFO → not a regular file, exit 2 (main hung or traced back before).
  • validate --all ~/broomva/.control/asks: output identical to bstack@main (exit 1 both, pre-existing ledger errors).
  • scripts/doctor.sh --quiet: 5 gaps, all environmental (workspace CLAUDE.md naming lines, $HOME/.control), none from this diff.

Review

The code itself passed P20 at https://github.com/broomva/workspace/pull/1132: A (agy) 10/10 and B (fresh Claude) 10/10 at 89ece497c, after a STRUCTURAL continuation was executed. This PR is a mechanical, byte-proven vendoring of that reviewed code, so no new review round runs. Its only new text is the provenance comment, the pins and the CHANGELOG.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Ledger files that are unreadable, invalid, or not regular files now produce clear errors instead of unexpected tracebacks.
    • Ledger operations reject symlinks and hard links, and detect files replaced while waiting for a lock.
    • Lock waits are bounded by the configured wait time.
    • Invalid ask values now produce validation errors, and empty values display as empty.
  • Other
    • Updated the application version to 0.51.1.

Walkthrough

The vendored ledger now handles read and validation errors, rejects unsafe file types, and bounds lock waiting. The release version, changelog, and pinned upstream commit and digest were updated.

Changes: Ledger safety and error handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ledger reads and ask validation
scripts/ask_ledger.py
Ledger read and decoding failures now raise LedgerError. Present ask values must be non-empty strings, and falsey ask text renders as an empty string.
Checked file access and bounded locking
scripts/ask_ledger.py, CHANGELOG.md, VERSION, tests/test_ask_ledger.py
File access rejects symlinks, hard links, and non-regular files. Lock acquisition uses the stored path, detects rename or replacement, and observes a validated wait deadline. The changelog, version, and upstream pin tests reflect the resync.

A narrow validation gap can leave a question appearing blank. It is worth fixing, but does not appear to block merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the main change: a resync of the vendored scripts/ask_ledger.py to workspace@3e1e37575 for v0.51.1 (BRO-3421). The raw summary confirms this. The changelog, VERSION bump, ask_ledger.py changes, and pinned upstream SHA/SHA-256 test updates all match the title. The title is specific and concise, though it includes a ticket ID and version tag that add some noise. The 94-character length is long but within reason for a conventional-commit style title.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 58.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 12 functions across 2 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

🎯 Functional Correctness | Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the reader’s text rule to validate ask.

If ask contains only U+FEFF, str.strip() accepts it, but _text() treats it as empty. Validation then passes an ask with no readable question. Keep the string type check and use _text(ask["ask"]) is not None for the content check.
