fix(dockercompose/nomad): isMatchingRule returns true if any rule matches - #11038
(N/A, docs already match) I have updated the documentation via pull request in website repository.
I have tested this pull request manually with a custom Updatecli build and it works as expected.
Tradeoff
This is arguably a breaking change, as it may result in more/less pipelines running. However it brings the behavior inline with the documentation, and IMO intuition - so I think this is acceptable.
Potential improvement
It looks like the same bug applies to other plugins - I'd be inclined to make this change to all.
dockerfile and woodpecker were fine, nomad had the same bug. Added tests to each, and refactored to make the implementation more consistent
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Matching rules for Docker Compose, Dockerfile, and Nomad are now evaluated independently. All applicable conditions within a single rule must match, while a match from any one rule is sufficient. This corrects cases where conditions from separate rules could combine to produce an incorrect result.

Walkthrough
Docker Compose, Dockerfile, and Nomad matching methods now evaluate each rule independently. Tests cover cases where an image condition matches after path conditions fail. The Woodpecker comment now describes matching any defined rule.
Docker Compose, Dockerfile, and Nomad now evaluate field matches separately for each rule. Tests verify that a matching image rule returns true when path rules do not match. The Woodpecker comment now says that any defined rule can match.
Unusually named jobs or services can be incorrectly included or ignored. Correct both matching checks before merging, or explicitly accept this limited risk.

fix: isMatchingRule returns true if any rule matches
fix(dockercompose): isMatchingRule returns true if any rule matches
Oct 25, 2026
compose.go passes a relative path to isMatchingRule. If a nonmatching absolute Path rule runs first, isMatchingRule rewrites the shared filePath to an absolute path. A later matching relative Path rule then fails. Only skips the valid Compose file, while Ignore fails to exclude it.
Suggested fix
for _, matchingRule := range m {
var ruleResults []bool
var match bool
var err error
+ ruleFilePath := filePath
// Only check if path rule defined
if matchingRule.Path != "" && filePath != "" {
if filepath.IsAbs(matchingRule.Path) {
- filePath = filepath.Join(rootDir, filePath)+ ruleFilePath = filepath.Join(rootDir, ruleFilePath)
}
- match, err = filepath.Match(matchingRule.Path, filePath)+ match, err = filepath.Match(matchingRule.Path, ruleFilePath)
if err != nil {
log.Errorf("%s - %q", err, matchingRule.Path)
}
ruleResults = append(ruleResults, match)
if match {
- log.Debugf("file path %q matching rule %q", filePath, matchingRule.Path)+ log.Debugf("file path %q matching rule %q", ruleFilePath, matchingRule.Path)
}
}

later rules continue to see the originally discovered path.

Hi @mnahkies ,
Thanks for the pullrequest, this is one of those technical decision where I get confused over time.
I think it makes sense but I am wondering how to prevent this over time

I'd be inclined to apply the same fix + test additions to the docker and nomad plugins:
In terms of preventing it overtime - I think the additional tests should go a long way. One approach could be to try and refactor the matching rules to be more abstract / a shared concept across plugins. There are slight differences between each though, so I'm unsure if it's worthwhile.
YAML permits an empty mapping key, and this parser copies that key into svc.Name without validation. A nonempty image then reaches both production matching calls.
For a later Services-only rule, service == "" skips the service comparison. The reset ruleResults slice stays empty, so the rule returns true even though its configured service name does not match. This can incorrectly affect both Ignore and Only.
Suggested fix
allMatchingRule := true
+ if len(ruleResults) == 0 {+ continue+ }
for i := range ruleResults {

Update the matchingRule loop so a rule with no comparison results cannot be
treated as a match; in particular, when an empty service skips the service
comparison, continue to the next rule or otherwise return a non-match before
evaluating the empty ruleResults slice.

That's something I wondered the first time I introduced this concept but every ecosystem comes with slightly modification so I don't think it 's worth doing

You were correct, gitlab api reduced the api limit for un-authenticated request so the gitlab integration tests executed from CI now exhaust the api limit very quicky. I disabled the tests
