Summary

Boot discovery reports a degraded ZFS boot pool as healthy because zpool status -x exits successfully for degraded pools. Query the health property and require a successful exact ONLINE result before the healthy return.

Why This Exists

The false health result bypasses the existing grace period for a late boot device and makes degraded boot logs misleading. DST-253 records this on Unraid 7.4.0-beta.1 and earlier 7.3 release lines.

Resolution

Reuse find_device and its existing import/export loop. A successful ONLINE property query selects the existing expansion and return path. Other results keep the existing retry count and final degraded boot path.

Reviewer Considerations

  • This changes early boot. QA must test an owner-built Unraid 7 artifact whose early boot rc.S contains this commit. Installing the generated PR plugin after boot does not validate boot discovery.
  • The existing TIMEOUT bounds iterations, not wall-clock duration of ZFS commands. Import/export handling is unchanged.
  • DST-252 is separate: this does not repair a member that drops after import. Its earlier reinstatement PR fix(rc.S): reinstate a boot mirror member that drops after import (DST-252) #2754 was closed without merging because the proposed recovery was not proven.

Behavior Changes

Healthy pools retain expansion and immediate return. A degraded pool waits through the existing discovery attempts and reports degraded when that budget ends. Failed, empty or unexpected health results cannot be reported as healthy. Non-ZFS detection is unchanged.

Implementation Summary

  • Replace the exit-status-only health predicate with successful zpool get -H -o value health plus exact ONLINE comparison.
  • Add an isolated regression test for the extracted production discovery function. All disk and ZFS commands are stubs; no real storage is touched.

Verification

  • Baseline: seven failing assertions expose the early healthy return.
  • python3 tests/boot-pool-health.py: six tests pass, including unhealthy/unknown/empty values, failed query emitting ONLINE, delayed recovery, expansion, import failure and vfat handling.
  • bash -n etc/rc.d/rc.S and git diff --check: pass.
  • Independent architecture, safety/checklist and validation reviews: pass, with no blocking findings.
  • No appliance boot QA or release qualification is claimed.

Risk

The formerly bypassed retry/export loop now executes for degraded pools. Before release, test healthy and degraded ZFS boots, late device enumeration, permanently absent members and ordinary USB boot on disposable appliances. Source tests do not establish installed-artifact behavior.

Proposed release note: Corrected ZFS boot-pool health detection so degraded pools use the existing device-discovery retry period and are reported accurately.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Boot pool health is now confirmed only when the health check succeeds and reports ONLINE.
    • Pools reported as unhealthy or in an unknown state continue through the existing retry process, helping prevent startup from treating an unverified pool as healthy.
    • Non-ZFS boot handling remains unchanged.

Walkthrough

The startup script now checks ZFS pool health with zpool get and accepts only a successful result of exactly ONLINE. New tests exercise health checks, retries, probe and import failures, and non-ZFS handling.

The boot-pool check is implemented as intended, but its tests could miss a future incorrect health query. The change is mergeable with this bounded test-coverage gap.
