Summary

Ports upstream Codex turn latency and throughput metrics (steipete#4304, v0.75.0).

  • New per-session scanner (codex_workspaces/turn_performance.rs) reads Codex rollout logs and keeps only turns with a successful task_complete, a positive duration, and owned token_usage_record requests that sum to the reported output. Contradictory usage, failed turns, first-token time greater than duration, other threads' usage, and turns outside the date range are dropped. Oversized relevant lines drop the file.
  • Turns are merged by turn id per session, so a turn copied into two rollout files counts once.
  • Upstream thresholds: P95 needs 20 turns, quartiles need 4. Below those, the UI says "needs 20 turns" / "needs 4 turns".
  • Usage & Spend → Codex conversation rows show turn output tok/s, median first token and median turn duration. A Performance details disclosure adds P95 duration and first token, the middle-50% rate range, cached input share, and per-model/effort groups.
  • SessionUsage.turn_performance (serde default None); sidecar payload version 3 → 4 so cached snapshots rebuild.
  • 19 locale keys in all 10 locales (non-English machine translated).

Differences from upstream:

  • Shown per conversation row instead of a separate panel.
  • No CLI or serve output.
  • The scanner reads rollout files directly instead of reusing the cost cache, so each file is read twice during indexing.

Commands run

  • cargo fmt --all: clean
  • cargo test --manifest-path rust/Cargo.toml: 4746 passed, 1 ignored (80/80 codex_workspaces)
  • cargo test --manifest-path apps/desktop-tauri/src-tauri/Cargo.toml: 733 passed
  • cargo clippy -D warnings on both manifests: clean
  • pnpm test: 135 files, 1274 tests passed; pnpm run build: ok (1668 locale keys match)

UI proof

Result: pass.

  • Branch feat/codex-latency-metrics at 5555015
  • Binary: C:\Users\FSOS\AppData\Local\Win-CodexBar\cargo-target\repo-bb654619ec0c47e2\worktree-55d39f0a786808b4\debug\codexbar-desktop-tauri.exe
  • Proof mode settings:usageSpend; CDP port 9375. Real local Codex history: 526 rollout files.
  • Method: fresh pnpm run tauri:build:debug; launched with CODEXBAR_PROOF_MODE and WEBVIEW2_ADDITIONAL_BROWSER_ARGUMENTS=--remote-debugging-port. CDP drives the Settings page target (trusted Input.dispatchMouseEvent; native <select> set through the React value setter + change) and reads persisted values with get_settings_snapshot. cua-driver 0.34.0 gives verify_state, real-pixel get_window_state screenshots and DWM facts. Background only: windows parked on the secondary monitor, no foreground or keyboard use. Settings were backed up and byte-restored afterwards.

CDP assertions (all passed on run 2; W:/mac-parity/proof/899/steps.jsonl):

  • The breakdown tabs are Providers, Projects and Sessions. Clicking Sessions selects it.
  • 8 conversations show a performance line. Each line matches Turn output: N.N tok/s · First token: N.N s|— · Turn duration: N.N s|—, for example "Turn output: 44.8 tok/s · First token: 6.5 s · Turn duration: 240.8 s".
  • Tooltips are exact:
    • "Turn output includes reasoning, tools and waits. It is not model generation speed."
    • "Model first token may be reasoning, before visible answer text."
  • Performance details is collapsed by default. A click opens it, showing the caveat, "P95 duration: Needs 20 timed turns", "P95 first token: Needs 20 timed turns", "Middle 50% of turns: 44.9–46.8 tok/s", "Cached input: 96%" and the "By model and reasoning effort" rows. A second click closes it.

CUA: verify_state; DWM dark under auto; 01-sessions-performance-lines.png, 02-performance-details-open.png, 03-performance-details-open-titles-blurred.png in W:/mac-parity/proof/899/.

Observations:

  • Run 1 timed out (steps-run1-scan-timeout.jsonl). The tab showed "Scanning…" for about 8 minutes on this debug build before the breakdown appeared. That may be a first-time sidecar reindex. It is worth checking with a release build, but it was not measured against main.
  • The end-of-run focus check was false, but no click changed focus, and CodexBar never took focus. The user's own window switching is the likely cause.

Not covered: P95 values with 20 or more timed turns; the — path for missing first-token data; other locales.

Personal info visible: yes. 01 and 02 show real Codex conversation titles. Use only 03-…-titles-blurred.png publicly. In that shot, the titles were blurred by a CSS filter added by the harness; it is not app UI. The model name gpt-6-luna and cost figures are also visible.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Usage & Spend now shows per-conversation performance metrics, including output rate, first-token time, and turn duration.
    • Expand details to view latency percentiles, output-rate ranges, cached-input share, and breakdowns by model and reasoning effort.
    • Metrics appear when enough valid completed turns are available; unavailable values include explanatory guidance.
    • Added localized labels and help text for these metrics.

Make the bounded JSONL reader and request-usage helpers crate-visible so the Codex workspace turn scanner can reuse them. No behavior change.
Scan completed Codex turns from local rollout logs and summarize first-token latency, turn duration, and output throughput per session. A turn counts only with a successful task_complete, owned usage records that sum to the reported total, and no contradictory copies. Scans reuse the bounded JSONL reader and the indexer merges results by turn id. The sidecar payload version is bumped so stale snapshots rebuild.
Add the Usage & Spend performance labels, help text, and caveats to every locale and the TypeScript key list in parity.
Render turn output rate, first-token and turn duration under each Codex conversation in Usage & Spend, with a Performance details disclosure for P95 latency, the middle-50% rate range, cached input share, and per-model and effort groups. Values appear only once the minimum sample counts are met.

Chinese-locale users see a label for the middle-50% range that does not say it refers to output rate. This is cosmetic and can be fixed with a small wording change; it does not block merging.

Full details: Provider Data Stays Siloed

Explanation

The changed path is Codex-specific: CodexWorkspacesIndex scans rollout files and stores only turn metrics, model, and reasoning-effort groups in SessionUsage.turnPerformance. The sidecar persists this Codex snapshot, and ProjectConversations renders the same Codex conversation data. The diff adds no identity, plan, account label, or email fields, logs, or exports. It also adds no ProviderId-specific branch. Existing load_native_spend gating returns empty native conversations for non-Codex providers and is unchanged by this pull request.

Full details: Secrets Handled Safely

Explanation

No credential exposure or cross-application credential mutation was introduced. The new scanner opens rollout files read-only and stores only numeric metrics plus normalized model/reasoning-effort labels; it does not log raw payloads or include credential fields in snapshots. The diff adds no tracing, println, console, or user-error output carrying input data. Sidecar writes remain confined to CodexBar's own local-usage/codex-workspaces-v1.sqlite; no keyring, credential-file, or Codex login changes were added. Test file writes target temporary rollout fixtures.

Full details: No Unapproved Dependencies

Explanation

The reviewed diff changes no Cargo.toml or package.json file. It adds no npm, Yarn, or pnpm lockfile, and it does not change a pinned pnpm packageManager version. The custom check therefore has no failure condition.

Full details: Ui Changes Include Windows Proof

Explanation

The pull request changes visible Settings UI in ProjectConversations.tsx by adding per-conversation performance metrics and expandable details. The description includes Windows proof: a fresh pnpm run tauri:build:debug, a Windows executable path, CDP assertions, and named screenshots. The check requirement is satisfied.

Name the output-rate range in both translations. Both strings describe the middle 50% of turns without identifying the throughput statistic.

  • rust/src/locale/zh-CN.ftl#L413-L413: Translate the label as “输出速率中间 50% 区间” or equivalent.
  • rust/src/locale/zh-TW.ftl#L413-L413: Translate the label as “輸出速率中間 50% 區間” or equivalent.

The PR objective defines this metric as a middle-50% output-rate range.
