What changed in this PR
Exposes socket executable paths in network events so CEL rules and alert runtime details can identify the originating binary.
Changes:
- Copies bounded executable paths into events, clearing them when attribution is unavailable or reads fail.
- Exposes paths through the network interface and alert adapter.
- Adds datasource, CEL, legacy-schema, and alert propagation tests.

Review — exposing the socket executable path
The BPF side is careful work: the bounded copy with bpf_core_field_offset/size/exists is the right way to read a struct whose layout differs between the build-time IG headers and the runtime socket-enricher, and the native harness covers 0/1/16/512/overlong and the missing-metadata case. Four things below, one of which changes what the description promises.
1. The alert half only takes effect when the process-tree lookup misses
SetFailureMetadata sets Path: exePath on runtimeProcessDetails, and then CreateRuleFailure does:
if enrichedEvent.ProcessTree.PID != 0 {
ruleFailure.SetRuntimeProcessDetails(armotypes.ProcessTree{
ProcessTree: enrichedEvent.ProcessTree,
ContainerID: enrichedEvent.ContainerID,
})
}which replaces the whole struct. That tree already carries a path of its own — conversion/convert.go fills Path from execEvent.GetExePath(), forkEvent.GetExePath() and the procfs feeder — so on a tree hit the alert is unchanged by this PR, and on a miss (PID 0) the new value survives. That's a reasonable fallback, but "include it in alert runtime process details" reads as though alerts gain the path generally, and they don't. network_test.go calls SetFailureMetadata directly, so it passes either way; asserting through CreateRuleFailure with a populated ProcessTree would pin the real behaviour.
The CEL half (GetExePath()) and the private-agent exporter in armosec/private-node-agent#709 read the event directly and are unaffected by this.
2. 512 bytes on every network event, against a 256 KiB per-CPU perf buffer
struct event_t gains char exepath[512] — on an event that was an l4endpoint + gadget_process + a byte, that's roughly a 3-5x size increase, paid on every TCP SYN and every sub-1024 UDP packet whether or not the enricher has a path. The reader is perf.NewReader(m, gadgets.PerfBufferPages*os.Getpagesize()) with PerfBufferPages = 64, i.e. 256 KiB per CPU, so the number of events that can sit in the ring before LostSamples drops by the same factor, and every event's DeepCopy allocates 512 more bytes.
Worth sizing deliberately because it compounds with armosec/private-node-agent#708, which lands at the same time and adds a traffic class (IPv6) to this gadget: more events, each 3-5x bigger, same ring. If the realistic ceiling is a container path rather than a host path, a smaller bound (256, or the enricher's configured exepath size) buys most of the value back; alternatively bump PerfBufferPages for this gadget. The sustained-high-traffic measurement you've deferred to CI is the one that decides this, so it'd be good to have before merge rather than after.
3. The Go-side test doesn't exercise the decode it depends on
network_exepath_test.go:36 registers the field as api.Kind_String. The real gadget field for a char[N] is a C string, and only the Kind_CString branch of fieldAccessor.String trims at the NUL. Your own harness shows exactly why that matters — memset(socket_value.exepath, 'a', sizeof(...)) then truncation leaves a terminator with stale bytes behind it — so the accessor test passes on a representation the gadget never produces. Switching the test field to Kind_CString (with trailing garbage after the NUL) would cover the path that actually runs.
4. packets.c ends with the copy disabled
main() restores socket_available and path_exists after their cases, but the last two lines are path_size = 1; check_path(""); path_size = 0; check_path(""); and then return 0 — leaving path_size = 0 and an unterminated exepath full of 'a'. Any assertion appended after that line silently runs with the copy switched off and passes. A path_size = sizeof(socket_value.exepath) restore at the end costs nothing and keeps the next addition honest.
Smaller
pkg/ebpf/gadgets/network/README.md still lists the reported fields and a sample JSON event without exepath.
Checked and fine
The CO-RE wiring resolves against the runtime layout (the ebpf operator publishes the enricher's BTF and sets ExtraRelocationTargets), the bounded copy is NUL-terminated at every boundary including > NETWORK_PATH_MAX, and the skb_val == NULL reset is genuinely unreachable in production (both managers set gadget_filter_by_mntns = true, so a null socket value is discarded before the emit) — defensive, not dead-wrong.
Budget a 256-byte executable path, record mixed IPv4/IPv6 perf-buffer measurements and add a reproducible load harness. Exercise real CString decoding with stale tail bytes, assert alert path precedence through CreateRuleFailure, restore native test state, and document socket/alert semantics. Bound the sender and compiler subprocesses.
If sudo or the sender stalls, check_output() can wait indefinitely. The 60-second ig timeout does not bound this call. Add a timeout and handle subprocess.TimeoutExpired. Also bound the compiler call at Line 88. Based on learnings, subprocess calls need timeouts to prevent indefinite waits.

Re-review — all four addressed, with numbers
Checked each fix against the thing it was supposed to fix:
- Event size —
NETWORK_PATH_MAX512 → 256, and rather than argue it you measured it. The load harness table is the useful artifact here: at 100k packets/s, baseline loses 0 samples, the 512-byte variant 462, the 256-byte variant 227; at 20k all three are zero. That's the honest version of my concern — halving the path halved the loss, and 384-byte events fit 655 records in the 256 KiB ring against 399 for 640-byte ones. - Decode fidelity — the accessor test now registers
api.Kind_CStringand writespath + "\x00stale-previous-path", so it exercises the trailing-garbage case the BPF side can actually produce, plus a 255-byte truncated path. packets.c—path_sizeis restored tosizeof(socket_value.exepath)with a re-assert at the end, so a future case appended there can't silently run with the copy disabled.- README —
exepathdocumented, including the caveat I hadn't thought to ask for: this is the socket-opening process, which an inherited socket can outlive. That's a better description of the field than the PR body had.
The alert path: the test documents the gap rather than closing it
TestCreateNetworkRuleFailurePathPrecedence pins the behaviour exactly, including the case worth a second look:
{"tree without path is retained", "/socket/curl", armotypes.Process{PID: 42}, ""}
So when the process tree has an entry but no Path — a procfs-seeded node, or an exec whose path wasn't captured — the socket path that is available gets dropped and the alert carries an empty path. That's the one shape where this feature's data would add something the tree can't supply, and it's the shape where it's discarded. Everything else in the table is right: tree path wins when it exists, socket path fills in when the tree is missing.
Falling back when the tree's path is empty (rather than on PID != 0) would close it in one line and wouldn't change any other row of your table. Not a blocker — the behaviour is now explicit and tested, which is what I was actually asking for.
Remaining as stated: paths over 255 bytes truncate, and the arm64 verifier/kernel-matrix runs are still CI/target-host work.
Approving.

Network events currently omit the executable path tracked by SocketEnricher, so CEL rules cannot identify the binary that opened a socket. Copy that path into the network gadget event with a bounded direct map-value copy using CO-RE field metadata, expose it through
NetworkEvent.GetExePath(), and use it as the alert path fallback when the enriched process-tree lookup misses (ProcessTree.PID == 0). A populated process tree retains precedence. Clear the reused event path when attribution is unavailable.Covers datasource/CEL access for system and renamed binaries, empty attribution, and legacy schemas, plus alert fallback/tree precedence through
CreateRuleFailure. HTTP paths and process-attributed profiles remain separate work.Validation:

exe_pathin R-NET-1 records. Tracks NAUT-1587 and armosec/private-node-agent#591.Review follow-up: use direct map reads to remove the socket-filter kernel-read helper dependency identified by CodeRabbit. This does not claim general lockdown compatibility for the existing socket enricher.
Jonathan review follow-up: CString decoding is exercised with post-NUL garbage, the native harness restores a valid source after boundary tests, and CreateRuleFailure tests pin both process-tree hit and miss behavior. See pkg/ebpf/gadgets/network/tests/load/README.md for the fixed-buffer size analysis and reproducible mixed IPv4/IPv6 load measurements.
