Some 1.7 batch PUT/MERGE operations used the reserved GraphID 0xFFFE. Current Store allocates a real ID, including during Raft replay, so an upgrade can hide the old rows before a client writes. Replacing the JAR does not undo the persisted mapping.
This change stops affected data before Store registration or snapshot replacement and provides a checked recovery procedure for readable, independently verified business graphs.
Main Changes
Add a read-only preflight before RocksDB factory, Store engine, Raft groups and registration initialize. Seek FFFE once per column family and validate GraphID metadata, including retained DB versions and latest snapshots. Avoid the normal DB opener and its version cleanup.
Ship bin/hugegraph-store-check.sh --check through the existing Java 17 Store runtime. It supports effective configuration/data paths, refuses active database locks, and gives actionable diagnostics without creating or changing the inspected databases.
Validate incoming snapshots before opening/replacing the local DB; publish the FSM committed index only after loading succeeds. Use configured CF options for snapshot verification and close native handles, including real level-7 SST snapshots.
Document recovery through existing HugeGraph Tools into a new empty cluster, with complete schema/data verification. The guide covers system-graph ownership, mixed prefixes, failed export shards, TTL, GraphSpace and rollback limits.
The default official fixture contains both the user graph and DEFAULT/~sys_graph/g under FFFE. Native mapping and prefix-conversion prototypes preserved a synthetic single-owner database, but could not safely establish ownership for that real source. The production change therefore adds no allocator compatibility branch, migration-specific Raft command, physical converter, or recurring scan to ordinary requests.
Verifying these changes
Trivial rework / code cleanup without any test coverage. (No Need)
All 38 reactor modules compiled. The selected suite passed 65 tests, 0 failures/errors/skips: 25 new tests and 40 existing tests. Native database tests and mocked FSM tests are distinguished in their source. The executable/nested classes, launcher and packaged guide were compared with the final build outputs.
Actual isolated Linux components used the official 1.7.0 distribution, HugeGraph base c2ec5704332fc1102ad277d6aae6658d65c73601, and Tools 411aca3389dd610d9a4f3b3595f06a53ee67e2ff. The issue author's fixture plus its five post-snapshot vertices produced 34 vertices, 63 edges and the same 16 Gremlin checks.
Scenario
Observed result
Official 1.7 cold restart
34 V / 63 E, all 16 checks
Unguarded master, first batch write after a complete old snapshot
Old data lost visibility; 1 V / 0 E
Unguarded master, old tail replay with PD/Store only
Allocated IDs before Server started; 5 V / 0 E
JAR-only rollback after allocation
1 V / 0 E on a cold 1.7 restart
Existing Tools restore into empty 1-Store and 3-Store targets, 2 partitions
Full schema IDs/definitions, vertex/edge IDs/properties/endpoints and all 16 checks equal; re-export, cold restart and new writes passed
3-Store leader SIGKILL and lagging replica recovery
Writes resumed in 5.127 s; original data preserved; genuine remote snapshots at indices 32/38 installed and normalized replica business digests agreed
Final packaged Spring startup on official old data
Exit 1 in 5.766 s; PD Store count 0 to 0; all 162 storage file/directory entries unchanged, including bytes and mtimes
Final packaged 3-Store cold startup and new write
Full 43 V / 63 E recovery oracle and adjusted queries passed; next write returned 201 with all previous objects preserved
Packaged offline command
Clean directory passed; missing path/legacy data returned 2; two legacy checks left all 52 source files unchanged
The final Store executable SHA256 was 83d9409d64dd6c9a5b9f6a4bf0b4c5bc1871e786a767f6f0d07573691fae34c1. The fault/snapshot chain used 97ac58d56969617e83346a8925d5f7f5b0384adc675088a7944619b44e488dc1; comparing 839 Store classes found only the CLI missing-path and checker whitespace-path fixes differed. Final cold-start/write gates used the final executable. Official 1.7 Server needed Java 11 and a launcher classpath ordering adjustment for its bundled Netty versions; no release JAR was modified.
A subsequent execution-workspace reset made the original raw experiment logs and DB archives unavailable. The table records results returned before that reset; the committed regression tests and fixture references remain reproducible. Release CI should rerun the applicable gates.
Recovery scope
The verified logical route covers a trusted readable DEFAULT business graph and the six exported schema/data types. Other GraphSpaces, original TTL expiration, auth/variables/system KV/OLAP/task state need their own validated recovery path. Historical overwrites and ambiguous ownership are not automatically recoverable. A zero backup exit status is insufficient; the guide requires failed-shard and complete-object checks.
Production-scale performance, platform/provider variants, interrupted restore/recreation, mixed-version rolling upgrade/rollback, and legacy incoming-snapshot rejection in a real multi-replica cluster remain outside the completed matrix. See apache#3223 for the wider release contract.

The matching website changes are submitted in org documentation PR #47 / ASF documentation PR #523, using the same source branch at 16a05d952e29e5b63988227c8b54a74f8f10a84f.
The website section describes the offline checker only for a Store build containing ASF runtime PR #3399. Both the documentation and runtime PRs still await merge; neither website publication nor availability in a released runtime is claimed. The existing #301 guard documentation remains separate and unchanged.
- reject legacy prefixes and invalid mappings before Store registration
- validate incoming snapshots before replacing databases or advancing the index
- ship a read-only checker using the existing Store runtime
- document and test logical recovery through existing HugeGraph Tools
Startup remains protected, but an incomplete database can produce a less useful recovery message. This is a bounded issue to fix or accept before merging.

Addressed the three current ASF apache#3399 review findings in shared source commit 59f41ba9b1de678105552286d4f3d0dfc04ca3c6, after normally merging current org master 969bb1420:
Docker assembly input: allow only the packaged GraphID guide through the context ignore rules. Actual BuildKit COPY failed with the old rules and passed with the new ones.
Selected provider in the offline checker: reuse verified runtime selection and prepend its JAR. CI-wired launcher fixtures cover standard/Topling selection, quoted arguments and unverified-runtime refusal.
Startup error scope: require a typed GraphID preflight cause for forced exit; unrelated startup errors keep their previous lifecycle.
Validation: EditorConfig formatting, clean compilation of all 38 modules, all 66 tests in the seven focused GraphID/batch/FSM classes, launcher fixtures and Store distribution packaging passed. The actual packaged standard checker passed on an unchanged empty data directory; an unprepared Topling runtime was refused. This does not claim native Topling data compatibility or completion of the foreground/signal/full-image CI gates.
The same source head is visible in both org #325 and ASF apache#3399. New CI is running; the existing critical Spring Framework dependency-review failure is a separate unresolved baseline issue, not a passed check. No release, merge or production data operation was performed.
The startup preflight is read-only and runs before the Store engine, heartbeat and PD registration. A typed refusal exits 1, and healthy 1.7/1.8 GraphID metadata and keys cannot match the FFFE or range checks. One regression remains: a partly deleted older DB version now blocks startup instead of being pruned (see inline).
Evidence: a static trace of HgStoreNodeService.init, HgStoreEngine.init, GraphIdManager and RocksDBSession.findLatestDBPath; a probe that removes CURRENT from db/00000 next to a healthy db/00000_42 got the refusal; LegacyGraphIdCheckerTest, GraphIdSnapshotGuardTest and GraphIdSnapshotLevelsTest pass locally, and CI passes at this head. The three findings on apache#3399 (Docker context, Topling launcher, exit scope) are fixed. Not tested: a refused incoming snapshot fails only that Raft group while the Store stays Up in PD, and its multi-replica effect is untested here and in the PR.
This PR and #301 (mirrored as apache#3330) are alternative fixes for the same issue. Please keep one and close the other.
Website-documentation follow-up: org hugegraph-doc #47 and ASF hugegraph-doc #523 now share submitted head 16a05d952e29e5b63988227c8b54a74f8f10a84f. Their new CN/EN section describes the parser and launcher actually present in runtime source 59f41ba9: Java 17, a single comma-separated --data-path value, effective local YAML, no Spring/PD/Server startup, lock refusal, per-Store DB/snapshot scope, exit-code limits and verified Topling selection. The PR documentation status now links those submissions. Both runtime and documentation still await merge; the website is not reported as published and no released tag is claimed to contain the command.
For the #301/#325 overlap raised in the overall reviews: I checked #301 at 31851a0d and this PR at 59f41ba9. #301 integrates checks into GraphIdManager, PartitionEngine and the RocksDBSession path-resolution/staged-snapshot callbacks, including cached sessions. This PR places a separate read-only LegacyGraphIdChecker before HgStoreNodeService initializes the engine and additionally ships GraphIdCheckCommand/the offline launcher plus operator recovery guidance. Its snapshot path also validates before replacement and committed-index publication.
The startup and snapshot guards overlap; the standalone inspection command and its documentation are a separate operator-facing layer, not a reason to merge duplicate guards. This metadata update makes no choice between the alternatives and does not close or combine either PR. The newly reported superseded-directory finding is tracked separately and is not claimed fixed by the documentation update.

Blocking: no. Score: 10/10 (10, no open items). Covers 705c0b0.
Important, partly deleted older DB version blocks startup (LegacyGraphIdChecker.java:197): Fixed in 9bc3296. The refusal now names the directory, says CURRENT is missing and points to the new "Incomplete database directories" section, which gives a conservative manual recovery. The checker still refuses rather than prunes, which matches the read-only design.
Keep one of #325 and #301: resolved, #301 is closed.
The merge 705c0b0 also brings in apache#3404 and apache#3405, which are not yet on this repo's master. They merge cleanly and were not re-reviewed here.
Evidence: git diff 59f41ba..705c0b0 and git merge-tree on the merge; LegacyGraphIdCheckerTest (including the two new tests) passes locally, and rerunning the earlier probe still gets the expected refusal; CI passes at this head. Not tested: a refused incoming snapshot fails only that Raft group while the Store stays Up in PD, and its multi-replica effect is untested here and in the PR.
