What

Adds a "Stress accents (sanctificétur)" option to the macronizer page: the acute accent of the Roman liturgical books, on its own (the primary use case — plain text with only the stress marked) or combined with macrons (sānctificḗtur). Wired to the engine's new accent mode (paired engine PR: hellpanderrr/latin-macronizer-wasm#1; the synced macronizer/dist/ is in this branch).

Also carries two earlier unpushed commits: the M‑023m triage sync (eb948ac, engine side 5fa7ed9) and the knowledge-harness docs (b041063).

The font fix (why the PR is bigger than one checkbox)

A vowel can be long and stressed at once, and on ā ī ū ȳ Unicode has no precomposed macron+acute, so the acute must stack over the macron at render time. The page's font, EB Garamond, has no mark-to-mark GPOS lookup — it drew both marks at the same height and they crossed into an X (dīvī́sa, Aquītā́nī). Verified in the font tables and by rendering.

The macronizer's Latin text (input, result view, and the font embedded into the exported PDF) is now Gentium Plus (SIL OFL 1.1, ~300 KB woff2), which stacks the marks cleanly. Chosen after a side-by-side preview of real engine output at the actual result size, light + dark mode.

Also fixed along the way

  • Reading popup dropped the accent. Clicking a reading wrote the unstressed spelling (dīvī́sa → dīvīsa); the initial render, the cycle list and the popup rows were three separate paths that could disagree. All now go through one renderWord().
  • Macronized input, re-run through the tool, keeps the accent right (engine-side fix; e2e covers it).

Updates since opening (2026-10-09)

  • Engine dist re-synced three times (pullfrog noted the synced macronizer/dist/ carries a larger production delta than the original body described — it now also includes the M-013b–i / M-023m scansion overrides, tagger/tokenizer fixes, and the three position fixes below; engine PR has the full list):
    • 8c18320 — A&G §§ 11–12 position counting: qu glide not a closing consonant (dénique, réliquus, áliquid, ítaque, ántequam), consonantal i closes like x (alicúius, eiúsdem).
    • 876b327 — a MARKED u after g/q is the word's own vowel (árguas, argúere).
    • cb46443 — detokenizeStressed keeps an enclitic's display form (u→v: nequeve, not nequeue).
  • Readings-popup labels now show the acute a click writes (b5ccdf7) — found in review, confirmed in the browser (1. dīvīsa label vs dīvī́sa written); labels mirror renderWord's stages and render in Gentium. E2e asserts label text + font.
  • Help-page examples also render in Gentium (913bbb4) so dīvī́sa stacks there too.

Tests

  • e2e/macronizer.spec.js — stress test (both-marks + accents-only), now asserting the result font so a regression to a non-stacking font fails CI.
  • Full run: macronizer 4/4 + editing/popup 16/16 e2e, 23 unit / 88 IPA / 2075 gloss / 348 census, engine 60/60 jest, gold 98.86% (13 placed / 0 missing), byte-parity intact (see engine PR).
  • node scripts/tests/check_help_links.mjs clean; sitemap + JSON-LD dates updated.

Adds the "Stress accents (sanctificétur)" option to the macronizer page,
wired to the engine's new accent mode (synced dist/): with macrons on both
marks combine (sānctificḗtur); with "Mark long vowels" off the output is
plain text with only the liturgical acute. Reading-cycling candidates are
re-stressed client-side with the engine's applyStress, so switching readings
keeps the accent in sync.

- macronizer.html: option chip, options pass-through, display + candidates
- e2e/macronizer.spec.js: stress test (both-marks and accents-only modes)
- help/macronizer.html: Stress accents documented in The options
- sitemap.xml + JSON-LD dateModified

- docs/ISSUES.md: M-024 (feature + 13 pinned corpus/wordlist disagreements),
M-025 (sync-site default path one level too high — the stale-copy bug)

Engine-side commits: 435f0d1 (feature), 9b2ee85 (macron+acute combine).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Reading-cycle candidates in stress mode were stressed from the plain text
even when macronization was on, so candidates[0] never matched the engine's
stressedText and the first cycle click jumped to the wrong reading. The
candidate base now demacronizes iff 'Mark long vowels' is off — the same
rule the engine applies.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…al agree

The popup's reading rows wrote the UNstressed reading into the text (clicking
a reading turned 'dīvī́sa' into 'dīvīsa'), and the three paths each rebuilt
their own string, so macron state and the acute could drift apart.

All three now go through renderWord(): macrons per the 'Mark long vowels'
checkbox, the acute per the current reading via the engine's applyStress.
The stale tokenDisplay() helper is gone (the enclitic carries no marks).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
With stress accents on, a vowel can carry both a macron and an acute
(dīvī́sa, Aquītā́nī). EB Garamond lacks mark-to-mark GPOS positioning, so it
drew the acute at the macron's height and the two crossed into an X.
Unicode only has precomposed macron+acute for e/o (ḗ ṓ); on a i u y the
sequence is ā+U+0301 and stacking is a font feature.

The macronizer's Latin text (input, result view, and the font embedded into
the exported PDF) is now Gentium Plus (SIL OFL 1.1), which has MarkToMark
and renders the combination cleanly. Chosen by the owner from a side-by-side
preview of real engine output.

- css/style.css: @font-face for Gentium Plus
- macronizer.html: input + result font; PDF export embeds the TTF
- e2e/macronizer.spec.js: asserts the result font (regression guard)
- help/macronizer.html: note under Reading the output
- docs/LESSONS.md: the diagnosis (font feature, not text)

Reviewed changes

Reviewed the hand-written site surface of this PR end-to-end (the macronizer/dist/ diff is generated engine code — its correctness lives in the paired engine PR — so the substantive pass is on the site files, help page, CSS, fonts and e2e).

  • Stress-accent option (macronizer.html, help/macronizer.html, e2e/macronizer.spec.js): new #accent checkbox threaded into the engine options, plus one renderWord() shared by the initial render, cycle list and popup so the three paths cannot disagree.
  • Gentium Plus font (css/style.css, fonts/GentiumPlus-Regular.*, PDF export): Latin input/result/PDF moved off EB Garamond. I verified the TTF's GPOS actually contains MarkToMark (lookup type 6, 2 lookups) while EB Garamond does not (types 4/9 only), so the stated rationale holds.
  • Engine dist/ sync: brings the site current with the accent API (applyStress, stressed/stressedText), the \p{L}\p{M} tokenizer fix, input mark-stripping, the isUnknown=false-on-override change, the M-013b–i / M-023m override sets and the scansion completion-bonus/hypermeter changes. Note this is a much larger production behavior delta than the PR body describes (worth a line in the description).
  • Docs / knowledge harness: CLAUDE.md, NEXT.md, docs/{ISSUES,LESSONS,PROJECT}.md, the /close skill, and the sitemap/JSON-LD date bumps.

…rtion, baton path

Pullfrog:
- the new accent checkbox was missing from CHECKBOXES, so it was never saved
  to localStorage nor restored on reload, unlike every other option;
- the e2e font check read getComputedStyle().fontFamily, which returns the
DECLARED stack and would pass even if the woff2 404'd and the browser fell
back to a non-stacking font. Now asserts document.fonts.check() plus a
loaded-fonts scan — the actual regression this guards against.
- dropped an unused stripStressMark import (the engine strips input).

CodeRabbit (on the close skill):
- the baton path is wiktionary_pron/NEXT.md, not the repo root (which does
  not exist); the skill now says so and the closing instruction points at it;
- the closing message is now conditional on Step 5 having actually committed,
so it can no longer claim a commit that did not happen.

ℹ️ No critical issues — the three prior findings are resolved; one minor test-coverage suggestion inline.

Reviewed changes

Re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review (ce987df → 0555b69, 3 files): all prior findings addressed, plus doc-only skill edits.

  • Addressed the prior review's three findings — 'accent' added to CHECKBOXES (macronizer.html:2237) so the option persists and restores; unused stripStressMark import dropped (macronizer.html:703); the e2e font assertion now checks the face actually loaded rather than the declared stack.
  • /close skill path fix (.claude/skills/close/SKILL.md) — the baton is wiktionary_pron/NEXT.md, not the repo root, and the closing message is now conditional on Step 5 having committed.

Loaded is not the same as used — the input box's Gentium face loads on its
own, so a regression of the result face to a non-stacking font would still
pass the load check. Keep the computed-style check on #resultText .ipa too
(pullfrog follow-up).

Reviewed changes

Re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 0555b69 (0555b69 → 03061f1, 1 file, e2e only).

  • Closed the last open test-coverage thread — e2e/macronizer.spec.js now also asserts the result element resolves to Gentium Plus via getComputedStyle().fontFamily, alongside the already-present loaded-face checks. The three checks together cover both a missing/404'd face and a result element falling back to a non-stacking font, so a regression to EB Garamond fails CI.

The prior review's only open finding is resolved; no new issues were introduced.

The help page's examples now include stacked macron+acute (dīvī́sa), and
without a mark-stacking face the system font may cross the marks — the same
class of bug as the result view. The page's Latin <i> examples now use
Gentium Plus (declared in the shared help.css; browsers only fetch it where
used).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ement notes

- NEXT.md rewritten as the baton for the stress-accents PRs.
- M-026 records the macron+acute font collision and its three fixed surfaces
(result, PDF, help page); totals headers re-counted by machine.
- LESSONS entries annotated with their now-existing guards (accent corpus test,
font e2e) — entries stay, the enforcement annotation is the point.
- Stale pre-rebase engine SHAs in ISSUES/LESSONS remapped after the rebase.

Reviewed changes

Re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 03061f1 (03061f1 → 8f5c3ed, 2 commits, 4 files: the help page's CSS/HTML plus session docs).

  • Gentium Plus on the macronizer help page (help/help.css, help/macronizer.html) — the shared stylesheet now declares the Gentium Plus face and the macronizer page's Latin <i> examples are set in it, so the newly added dīvī́sa example stacks its macron and acute rather than crossing into an X. The ../fonts/GentiumPlus-Regular.woff2 source resolves from help/ to the file this PR adds, and the rule is page-scoped, so the other help pages parse it without ever fetching the face.
  • Session docs (NEXT.md, docs/ISSUES.md, docs/LESSONS.md) — the baton is rewritten for the two stress-accents PRs, M-026 records the stacked-mark font collision and its three fixed surfaces, ISSUES totals are re-counted, and engine SHAs are remapped after the rebase. Documentation only.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Render popup reading labels with the selected reading output.

When Stress accents is enabled, each row displays p.shown, which does not include the stress projection. The same row stores the accented result in p.plain and writes it when selected. Users can therefore choose readings without seeing their different stress accents.

With Stress accents on, the readings list showed "1. dīvīsa" but clicking the
row wrote "dīvī́sa" — the accent, the thing the choice is about, was invisible
at the moment of choosing. Found in review (CodeRabbit), confirmed in the
browser, and it is the third surface of the same popup/display divergence
class as 6580f93.

The label now mirrors renderWord's stages — breve-preserving popup form,
demacron when "Mark long vowels" is off, then the stress projection — so it
stays distinguishable for readings that share a breveless spelling AND shows
what the click will write. Labels are set in Gentium Plus like the result
text, so double-marked labels stack (M-026 rule). E2e assertion added; the
readings-popup font and label text are now checked, not just the result font.

NEXT.md: "fully green" softened — every push re-triggers the checks.

Reviewed changes

Re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 8c18320 (0e254e1 → b5ccdf7, 2 commits). This closes the last CodeRabbit finding from review 5466945725, and I verified the fix end-to-end.

  • Popup reading labels now show the acute they write (b5ccdf7) — buildPopupHtml's label computation (macronizer.html:1150-1158) now mirrors renderWord's stages: it demacrons when "Mark long vowels" is off, then projects the stress through window.__applyStress when the accent option is on, so a reading's label shows the acute a row click writes instead of only revealing it after choosing. .r-form is set in Gentium Plus with an EB Garamond fallback (macronizer.html:165), and the e2e asserts the label renders sanctĭfĭcétur in that face (macronizer.spec.js:159-167).
  • Session docs (0e254e1) — NEXT.md/docs/ISSUES.md/docs/LESSONS.md record the M-027 qu-glide position-counting work and reword the PR-status line per the CodeRabbit nudge.

I confirmed the new label path agrees with what a row click writes: it uses the same window.__applyStress(shown+encl, c+encl, !!encl) call as renderWord (macronizer.html:750), so acute placement is identical; the only intentional divergence is the label keeps breves (documented — readings that share an output spelling must stay distinguishable). The .r-form rule is not duplicated in the stylesheet, and the e2e's macronize-off setup matches the label's demacron+stress path case-for-case.

Reviewed changes

Re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review at b5ccdf7 (b5ccdf7 → e2c2861, 4 commits): one engine dist/ sync plus three docs commits.

  • Marked-u-after-g stress fix (876b327, engine fe3e23f) — syllabify() now takes the reading's length-marks and only treats a u after g/q as the glide when the reading leaves it unmarked (árguas, argúam, argúere regain their accent). Generated dist/ code; the single syllabify caller passes marks correctly. Correctness lives in the paired engine PR, whose verification the docs record (jest 59, gold 98.86%, parity EXACT, corpus 97.94% distinct-pair / 99.24% token-weighted).
  • Docs (68ed256, d39ed68, e2c2861) — ISSUES.md gains M-028 (popup label hid the acute) and M-029 (marked-u-after-g), LESSONS.md a second-opinion-review lesson, and the NEXT.md baton is rewritten for the three position fixes and the distinct-pair vs token-weighted metrics. Documentation only, internally consistent across files.

The prior review's threads all remain resolved; the incremental delta introduces no new issues.

A second-opinion review (/adv solar) of the one-mode decision agreed with it
and flagged the one user-visible gap: the help said "the rules of the Roman
liturgical books" but a classical reader could still be surprised by Rōma/
fīdēs coming out unmarked or by an accent on a capitalized first letter being
written. Both are now named as deliberate: the classical `Róma` habit and
Solesmes' Option-2 capital suppression are the two notation variants this
tool does not follow, next to the existing muta-cum-liquida note.

…s GPOS)

Reported as "pdf export has old font" — the exported PDF does embed Gentium
Plus (verified in its object streams), but dīvī́sa / Aquītā́nī still showed the
acute crossing the macron into an X: the same visual symptom as the original
EB Garamond bug, different cause.

pdf-lib draws text strictly left-to-right and never applies the font's GPOS
mark positioning. NFC keeps the acute as U+0301 after a macron vowel on
a i u y, so it lands at the pen position — ī ink tops at 1305 units, the
combining acute spans 1047-1489 — and crosses. (ḗ/ṓ look fine because
Unicode precomposes the whole stack into one glyph.) The font's own layout
data says the acute belongs at (+273,+360) relative to the pen.

Fix: draw combining marks as their own text objects at the offsets fontkit
reports (fontkit was already loaded for subsetting), keeping unmarked runs
whole so ligatures survive. Verified by rendering: dīvī́sa, Aquītā́nī,
ipsṓrum all stack cleanly; content stream shows the acute as a separate Tm
raised ~2.5pt.

New e2e asserts the invariant, not glyph ids: decompress the exported PDF's
content stream, the acute must appear as a text object above the line's
baseline. Replayed against the user's broken PDF: 0 raised marks (fail);
fixed export: 2 (pass).

Reviewed changes

Re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 3082ab6 (3082ab6 → 982f66c, 3 commits): the PDF-export GPOS fix plus two docs commits.

  • PDF export stacks the acute above the macron (4b9ceaa) — pdf-lib never applies GPOS mark positioning, so a combining acute after a precomposed-macron vowel (dīvī́sa) would land at the pen and cross the macron into an X. New drawWord() (macronizer.html:1983) splits base+combining-mark clusters, asks fontkit for the glyph offsets via layout(), and draws each mark as its own text object at those offsets; mark-free runs stay whole so ligatures (fi) survive. I traced the positioning and the x-advance accounting: the internal advance is local to the function and the outer loop still advances by the full precomputed word width, so there is no double-advance, and the engine's output (at most one separate combining mark per precomposed-macron base) positions exactly. The new e2e "PDF export stacks the acute above the macron" inflates the exported content stream and asserts a text object raised above the line baseline — an invariant, not glyph-id-coupled — and the PR documents it as validated against both the broken PDF (0 raised → fail) and the fixed export (2 → pass).
  • Docs (820b335, 982f66c) — ISSUES.md gains the M-030 row for the PDF GPOS bug, LESSONS is updated, and the totals are recounted (40 fixed, 49 entries). Documentation only, internally consistent.

The prior review's threads all remain resolved; the incremental delta introduces no new issues.
