Summary

Adds a Stop control to the chat composer that aborts the active Agent turn through the main process, LangChain agent and model stream. Stop keeps completed edits, the partial reply and completed tool summaries; the existing chat sidecar records that the user stopped the turn.

Completed tool edits accumulate inside the agent. On normal completion or Stop, the panel applies the accumulated document once through runAgentTurn and the existing save/undo boundary. Each turn has one project save and one undo step, including turns with more than 50 tool edits. Reply text continues to stream live. Turn-scoped IPC ownership and event guards prevent stale stops, asynchronous tool results and cleanup from affecting another project, session or turn. All 15 locales include the new labels and status text.

Testing

Used Node 22.22.1 and npm 10.9.4, with an independent dependency installation and worktree based on upstream main d8bf2d81.

  • npm run test at 0cb26e07: 4949 passed, 7 skipped (357 files passed, one skipped), including the per-turn undo follow-up.
  • Cancellation coverage exercises real LangChain/ChatOpenAI HTTP signal propagation against a local controlled provider, in-flight and queued tools, cancellation/completion races, repeat stops, project/session changes, unmount, stale events/cleanup, immediate continuation, and persisted partial/stopped history.
  • Latest focused regressions at 66041d2c: 31 tests across LeftPanel.stop.test.tsx, LeftPanel.tooltips.test.tsx and agentDocumentApply.test.ts pass. The Stopping tooltip remains keyboard-accessible through aria-disabled, and repeat clicks send only one cancel request. Normal and stopped turns with 60 tool edits save once and undo to the pre-turn document; redo, manual-edit conflicts and Apply anyway remain covered. Stop also applies the accumulated document when no document event arrived. The per-turn regression tests failed against the original per-tool implementation and pass with this fix.
  • npx tsc --noEmit and npx tsc -p tsconfig.test.json --noEmit pass.
  • npm run lint and npm run lint:fix pass with 26 existing repository warnings; changed files have no diagnostics.
  • npm run docs:check passes (37 files). The architecture guide describes one save and undo step per turn, and the 22/10 manual run is explicitly marked superseded by 0cb26e07.
  • Initial Stop implementation validation: npm run i18n:check passed.
  • Initial Stop implementation validation: npm run build-vite passed.
  • Initial Stop implementation, before the per-turn undo follow-up: real macOS 15.8 / Electron 41.2.1 UI, operated through computer-use: Stop appears during the local provider stream; clicking it closes the provider connection, restores Send and preserves the partial reply and applied document. The next turn completes. That run observed the earlier per-tool undo behavior; the follow-up restores one undo step per turn and was verified by automated tests. Desktop E2E was not rerun for the follow-up. Vite used port 5186 and a private openscreen1260-ui-* userData; no other session processes were stopped.

Coverage limits: the provider was simulated locally, not a paid/remote model. Windows/Linux desktop UI and full native capture/preview/export workflows were not run. Telemetry reads and shader checks already in progress may finish as read-only background work; cancellation guards discard their results before any document commit.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Stop an AI chat response while it’s running. The chat shows when stopping is in progress and when the response has stopped.
    • Stopped responses retain any text and document edits already produced. Edits remain undoable, and you can continue chatting afterward.
    • Chat activity stays scoped to its project, so stopping a response won’t interrupt work in another project. Switching projects or sessions also prevents stale chat updates from appearing.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on stopping AI chat responses, cancellation behavior, and preserving edits.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a Stop action for AI chat turns. Cancellation is tracked by run identity from the renderer through the native bridge to the agent. Cancelled turns retain partial responses and completed document edits, and assistant messages can be marked as stopped.

Explanation

Issue [#1260] requires a per-run cancellation path, a bridge cancel action, a Stop control while the composer is busy, and labels in all 15 locales. The current head adds AbortController ownership in ChatRuns, propagates the signal through IPC, the agent, tools, and model stream, and exposes chat.cancel. LeftPanel provides the Stop control and retains stopped replies, tool summaries, and completed edits. The locale changes add the stop labels and status text. Tests cover cancellation races, stale ownership, retained edits, and continued session use.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the undo expectation in the chat-driven editing checklist.

This PR changes undo behavior. Each streamed tool edit now keeps its own undo step. ai-agent.md says so. These two checklist items still expect one undo to revert the whole turn as a single unit. The section intro at Line 540 says the same.

A tester who follows this checklist reports a false failure. Change the items to expect one undo step per applied tool edit. Update the intro at Line 540 to match.

Thanks @auberginewly, the cancellation itself looks solid: the signal reaches the model stream and the tool loop, and no tool edit is left half-applied.

One thing to change before merge: edits are now applied per tool, each with its own undo step. Today a whole agent turn undoes with one Ctrl+Z (the manual checklist still expects that), and the undo stack is capped at 50 (undoStack.ts), so a long auto-enhance turn can push the pre-turn state out of history. It also saves the project once per tool. Stop doesn't need this: runChat already returns the accumulated document on cancel, so applying it once at the end of the turn (stopped or not) keeps one undo step per turn. That would also remove the revision += 2 coupling in agentDocumentStream.ts.

Smaller points:

  1. manual-e2e-checklist.md:997: the blank line splits the results table (open CodeRabbit thread).
  2. runAgentTurn in agentDocumentApply.ts is now only called by its tests; drop it or keep using it.

Live streaming of the reply text is a nice touch and can stay.

🟡 Minor · Keep the stopping control focusable with aria-disabled. · LeftPanel.tsx:1693-1704

src/components/ai-edition/LeftPanel.tsx:1693-1704
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the stopping control focusable with aria-disabled.

When stopping is true, native disabled prevents the Tooltip trigger from receiving pointer or keyboard focus events. The chat.stopping tooltip is unavailable, and the control is removed from keyboard navigation. Use the existing aria-disabled pattern and block activation explicitly.

Thanks @auberginewly, 0cb26e0 does it: one apply per turn, one undo step, dead code gone. Two small leftovers before merge:

  • technical-documentation/architecture/ai-agent.md still says each applied tool edit keeps its own undo step (via AgentDocumentStream), please update that passage.
  • The 22/10 row in manual-e2e-checklist.md describes two Undos for two edits, the old behaviour. Please re-run that check on the new head or mark it as superseded.
Optional: CodeRabbit's note about aria-disabled on the Stop button keeps the "Stopping…" tooltip reachable.
