Why

Task local-fix-agent-harness-give-sandboxed-agents: fix(agent-harness): give sandboxed agents a writable Bun install root

Sandboxed agents inherited BUN_INSTALL=~/.bun, which nono grants read-only. Any bun install / bun add then failed immediately with error: EACCES accessing temporary directory, forcing agents to discover a manual BUN_INSTALL/BUN_TMPDIR workaround before they could change dependencies. The nono provider now points Bun at a writable, pre-created cache and grants it explicitly.

What changed

  • Added packages/agent-harness/src/sandbox/bun-env.ts with sandboxBunEnv(), which creates <os.tmpdir()>/devintern-bun/{install,tmp} and returns:
    • env.BUN_INSTALL
    • env.BUN_TMPDIR
    • the shared writable root to grant
  • Updated packages/agent-harness/src/sandbox/providers/nono.ts:
    • calls sandboxBunEnv() in wrapCommand
    • adds its writable root to the --allow grant set
    • returns env: bun.env on the WrappedCommand
  • Added coverage in packages/agent-harness/tests/sandbox-providers.test.ts:
    • asserts both keys exist
    • asserts neither points at $HOME/.bun
    • asserts both directories exist before spawn
    • asserts both are covered by an explicit --allow grant
    • spawns a child Bun process that writes under the chosen BUN_INSTALL

Existing spawnAgent and harness-probe paths already merge WrappedCommand.env, so both normal runs and readiness probes receive the overlay.

Scope

Included: nono provider env/grants, the shared helper, and provider tests.

Excluded: nono profile files, the user's global Bun install, Docker/native provider behavior, package-manager resolution, and any broader sandbox permission widening.

Tradeoffs

The cache is stable under the OS tmpdir, so it can warm across runs but may also retain stale package data until /tmp is cleaned. The provider sets Bun variables for every sandboxed harness even when it does not modify dependencies; this is a harmless environment overlay. Docker/native providers are untouched because their writes do not use the host ~/.bun in the same way.

Blast Radius

Only NonoSandboxProvider.wrapCommand changes. Its callers are spawnAgent and the harness readiness probe, both of which already merge returned env. The preflight grant cache key now includes the extra stable grant path. Unsandboxed runs, Docker, and native sandbox behavior are unchanged. Read access to credentials and ~/.bun is not widened.

Verification

All run successfully from the worktree:

  • cd packages/agent-harness && bun run test sandbox-providers.test.ts → 27 pass, 0 fail
  • cd packages/agent-harness && bun run test → 478 pass, 0 fail
  • cd packages/agent-harness && bun run typecheck → passed
  • cd packages/agent-harness && bun run lint → passed
  • cd packages/agent-harness && bun run format:check → passed
  • root bun run typecheck → 12/12 packages passed
  • bunx oxfmt --check packages/agent-harness/src/sandbox/bun-env.ts packages/agent-harness/src/sandbox/providers/nono.ts packages/agent-harness/tests/sandbox-providers.test.ts → all formatted

Not directly verified: a real bun install/bun add against a package registry under an active nono sandbox. The integration-style test verifies a child Bun process can write to the selected BUN_INSTALL root, and the grant assertions verify nono receives an explicit writable path.

…gent-harness): give sandboxed agents a writable Bun install root
- Scope the sandbox Bun cache to the current uid, create it with mode 0700, and reject symlinked, foreign-owned, or non-directory cache roots.
- Treat cache setup failures as non-fatal so wrapCommand cannot abort a run; omit the Bun env overlay and grant when the cache is unusable.
- Preserve a configured BUN_INSTALL/BUN_TMPDIR only when the sandbox grant set gives the child write access to it, so the default read-only ~/.bun is replaced by the cache.
- Add tests for cache failure modes, env precedence, and a child Bun write under a private temp cache root.
- Iteration 2: decide the Bun overlay from the final nono grant set instead of host writability, and thread the effective child env (SandboxPolicy.env) from spawnAgent/harness probe so child-only BUN_INSTALL/BUN_TMPDIR values are honored.

- Iteration 3: share the Bun overlay between the native and nono providers so auto-selected native (claude-code/codex) also gets a writable BUN_INSTALL/BUN_TMPDIR and granted cache root.
- Iteration 3: prepend <cache>/bin to PATH for redirected global installs and set DEVINTERN_NO_UPDATE/DEVPM_NO_UPDATE so the self-updater cannot loop against the disposable root.
- Iteration 3: add a nono kernel-boundary integration test gated on nono availability, with explicit skips for nested sandboxes and non-Linux hosts.

- Iteration 4: scope the Bun cache per workspace and append <cache>/bin to PATH so a planted launcher cannot shadow system tools or leak into another repository's run.
- Iteration 4: normalize isPathWithin operands with path.resolve/path.relative so traversal, trailing slashes, and component-prefix collisions are handled correctly.
- Iteration 4: move the warn-once cache-failure reporting into the shared trySandboxBunEnv so the auto-selected native provider no longer degrades silently.
- Iteration 4: evict cache roots idle for 30 days and prune BUN_TMPDIR entries older than 7 days, with tests; document that the cache is persistent rather than disposable.

- Iteration 5: move the Bun cache base to ~/.cache/devintern/bun (outside the sandbox's writable tmpdir) and grant only the current workspace subdirectory, closing the cross-repo cache-poisoning path.
- Iteration 5: sweep every workspace root under the cache base so abandoned roots (including one-off harness probes) are evicted, with a test for an unrelated stale root.
- Iteration 5: canonicalize paths with realpathSync (and resolve dangling links) in isPathWithin and reject relative BUN_INSTALL/BUN_TMPDIR values, so a symlink into read-only ~/.bun is redirected instead of kept.

fix(agent-harness): give sandboxed agents a writable Bun install root

No repository PR template was found, so this uses the requested review structure.

Why this change is needed

The task motivation is execution cost, not a product defect. Under the nono sandbox, bun add / bun install fails immediately because Bun defaults BUN_INSTALL to ~/.bun, which the sandbox mounts read-only:

error: EACCES accessing temporary directory. Please set $BUN_TMPDIR or $BUN_INSTALL

The task reports this happening six times in one run and 12 times across three logs. Each occurrence forces the agent to discover the workaround, create a scratch directory, set two environment variables, and retry. An agent that does not find the workaround can fail the task outright.

The task explicitly scopes the fix to the sandbox provider, keeps the user's real ~/.bun untouched, and leaves unsandboxed behavior unchanged.

What changed

Sandbox-local Bun cache and env overlay

A new shared helper, packages/agent-harness/src/sandbox/bun-env.ts, resolves a per-user, per-workspace cache at ~/.cache/devintern/bun/<workspace-hash>. It:

  • Creates install/ and tmp/ directories with mode 0700 before the child runs.
  • Rejects a cache path that is a symlink, a regular file, owned by another user, or not writable, rather than following it.
  • Treats the install/ and tmp/ subdirectories as the effective BUN_INSTALL and BUN_TMPDIR.
  • Evicts idle workspace roots after 30 days and stale temp entries after 7 days.
  • Emits a one-time warning and omits the overlay if the cache cannot be created, so a cache problem does not abort harnesses that never invoke Bun.

The cache base is under ~/.cache rather than the OS temp directory. The default policy grants the whole tmpdir read-write, so a cache there would be reachable by any sandboxed repository. Only the current workspace's subdirectory is granted.

Provider integration

  • nono: wrapCommand creates the cache, adds its root to the writable grant set, and only then computes the overlay against the final refined --allow set and the child environment. A configured BUN_INSTALL / BUN_TMPDIR is preserved only when the child actually has write access to it. This covers the important case where $HOME/.bun is host-writable but only --read inside the sandbox.
  • native (claude-code and codex): applies the same overlay and adds the cache root to allowWrite / writable_roots. This prevents auto mode from reintroducing the same failure outside nono.
  • When the install root is redirected, <cache>/bin is appended to PATH so globally installed launchers resolve without shadowing system tools. The CLI self-updaters are disabled via DEVINTERN_NO_UPDATE / DEVPM_NO_UPDATE, because their skip cache is read-only in the sandbox.

Correct environment propagation

SandboxPolicy now accepts the environment the child will actually be spawned with. spawn-agent.ts and harness-probe.ts populate it, and providers evaluate overrides against that value instead of process.env. This matters when a caller or project env file supplies a different BUN_INSTALL.

Supporting changes

  • Tests cover the env keys, writable grants, configured-value preservation, symlink and ownership rejection, cache eviction, and child-process writes.
  • turbo.json passes through NONO_CAP_FILE and SANDBOX_RUNTIME for the sandbox tests.
  • packages/pm-desktop/src/renderer/src/queries/useToolValidation.test.tsx changes TanStack Query notification scheduling during teardown. This is unrelated test hygiene, not part of the Bun fix.

Resulting behavior: dependency commands inside a sandbox get a writable cache on the first attempt; the user's ~/.bun remains read-only; Docker and unsandboxed runs are unchanged. A side effect is that bun install -g inside a sandbox now installs into the per-workspace cache instead of the user's global Bun root.

Validation actually performed

Observed in the pipeline evidence

  • __verify-1 reported: targeted sandbox-providers.test.ts 27 pass; full agent-harness suite 478 pass, 0 fail; package typecheck, lint, format:check, root typecheck, and the requested oxfmt --check all clean.
  • auto-review reported running the four touched test files (82 pass) plus bun run typecheck and bun run lint / oxlint clean.
  • auto-review ultimately reported success: false. Its high-priority findings concerned the earlier <tmpdir>/devintern-bun cache layout: cross-repository cache poisoning through the globally writable tmpdir, and a cache that was not actually bounded.
  • No recorded evidence shows a real bun install succeeding under an actual sandbox.

Not evidenced for the final revision

The verification reports describe the earlier tmpdir-based cache. The final diff uses ~/.cache/devintern/bun, adds per-workspace roots, and adds stale-root sweeping. No recorded test, typecheck, or lint run in the evidence explicitly covers that final revision. The diff contains additional tests for these behaviors, but their execution on the final revision is not shown.

Therefore this review cannot claim the final revision passes its suite. Suggested check before merge: run the task's verification commands against the final tree, including the kernel-level write test where nono is available.

Material risks

  • Cache behavior is the highest-risk area. The final cache layout and eviction logic postdate the recorded test runs and were added in response to review findings. They need a fresh verification pass.
  • bun install -g changes destination. Inside a sandbox it writes launchers into the per-workspace cache, not ~/.bun. Tools installed globally by one agent run will not be visible outside that workspace. This appears intentional but is user-visible behavior.
  • Self-update is disabled whenever the install root is redirected. If the overlay is active, CLI updaters will not run. If the overlay is later removed, behavior returns to updating.
  • Degraded mode can reproduce the original failure. If the cache cannot be created, the overlay is omitted with a single warning, and bun install falls back to the read-only ~/.bun EACCES path.
  • Cache eviction is destructive by design. sandboxBunEnv(base) sweeps and removes directories older than 30 days under an explicitly supplied base. The default base is narrow, but a caller passing a broad custom base could lose unrelated directories.
  • Pre-existing directories are tightened to 0700. This applies to the cache root and its subdirectories owned by the current user.
  • PATH ordering is intentional but security-sensitive. Appending rather than prepending prevents a writable cache from shadowing system tools; reviewers should confirm nothing else rewrites PATH afterward.
  • Scope expansion beyond nono. Native claude-code and codex runs now also receive the overlay and an extra writable root, even when they do not use Bun.
  • Unrelated test change. The pm-desktop query scheduler edit adds review surface with no connection to the task.

Where reviewers should focus

  1. packages/agent-harness/src/sandbox/bun-env.ts — cache path choice, ensurePrivateDir validation, grant-boundary checks, eviction/sweep side effects, and the bunSandboxOverlay decision logic.
  2. packages/agent-harness/src/sandbox/providers/nono.ts — whether the overlay is computed from the final refined grants and the child env, including the $HOME/.bun read-only case.
  3. packages/agent-harness/src/sandbox/providers/native.ts — parity for claude-code and codex, especially the added writable root and PATH behavior.
  4. packages/agent-harness/src/spawn-agent.ts and packages/agent-harness/src/sandbox/harness-probe.ts — confirm policy.env is exactly the env the child is spawned with and that the overlay is merged consistently.
  5. packages/agent-harness/tests/sandbox-providers.test.ts — the integration test is the main guard against a regression to ~/.bun; confirm it actually ran in the final revision and is not silently skipped in normal CI.

Summary

Sandboxed harness runs now receive a writable Bun install/temp root instead of the read-only ~/.bun, so bun install / bun add can succeed on the first attempt rather than failing with EACCES and forcing the agent to discover a manual workaround. The task records six occurrences in one run and 12 across three logs, with an agent risking outright task failure if it does not override BUN_INSTALL. The fix is provider-scoped: the user's real ~/.bun stays read-only, and unsandboxed runs keep their current behavior.

Evidence

spawnAgent (spawn-agent.ts)
  policy.env = spawnOptions.env ?? process.env      # env the child will actually get
  └─ provider.wrapCommand(...)
       ├─ nono add ~/.cache/devintern/bun/<workspace-hash> to --allow
       │ overlay BUN_INSTALL/BUN_TMPDIR only when the final grants
       │ do not already make the configured paths writable
       ├─ native same overlay; cache root added to allowWrite / writable_roots
       └─ docker unchanged (returns no env)

  child env = (spawnOptions.env ?? process.env) + wrapped.env

Observed before, from the task logs:

error: EACCES accessing temporary directory. Please set $BUN_TMPDIR or $BUN_INSTALL

Recorded validation:

  • __verify-1 reported 27 targeted sandbox-providers.test.ts passes, 478 full agent-harness passes with 0 failures, and clean package typecheck, lint, format:check, root typecheck, and oxfmt checks.
  • That report describes a <tmpdir>/devintern-bun cache layout, which is not the final diff's ~/.cache/devintern/bun/<workspace-hash> layout.
  • auto-review reported 82 passes across the four touched test files plus clean typecheck/lint, but ended with success: false. Its blocking findings targeted the earlier tmpdir layout: a globally writable tmpdir cache and a cache that was not actually bounded.
  • The final diff's ~/.cache base, per-workspace hash, appended PATH, and stale-root sweep appear to respond to those findings, but no recorded run covers that revision.
  • No recorded evidence shows a real bun install succeeding under a sandbox, and the added kernel-level nono write test is not shown running against the final revision.

Before/after execution results were not captured as a pair: the evidence contains the before failure but no after run. The validation above is observed pipeline reporting; whether the final revision passes is not evidenced.

Merge Danger

  • Reversibility is high. This is code-only with no schema, migration, or persisted state format. Reverting removes the env overlay and the extra grant, so sandboxed dependency commands return to the EACCES behavior; cache directories under ~/.cache remain but are harmless.
  • Dependents are narrow. WrappedCommand.env has two production consumers: packages/agent-harness/src/spawn-agent.ts:326-327 and packages/agent-harness/src/sandbox/harness-probe.ts:209. SandboxPolicy.env is new and threaded by those same paths; removing it while keeping providers would make them decide against process.env, which can preserve a BUN_INSTALL the child cannot write.
  • Blast radius is sandboxed spawns only. nono and native gain an additive env overlay and one extra write grant to a private per-workspace cache. If the cache cannot be created, trySandboxBunEnv warns once and omits the overlay, falling back to current behavior rather than failing the spawn; cache eviction only deletes inside its selected base.
  • User-visible side effect. Inside a sandbox, bun install -g writes launchers into the cache instead of ~/.bun, and DEVINTERN_NO_UPDATE / DEVPM_NO_UPDATE disable self-updaters when the install root is redirected. Reverting restores the old destinations and update behavior.
  • No staged rollout is needed for a local CLI change, because the worst case degrades to the current failure mode. The remaining gate is verification, not rollout: rerun the package suite and the kernel-level nono write test against the final tree before merge. The diff also includes a test-only pm-desktop scheduler change and test env passthrough in turbo.json; neither affects production runtime.
