Empty CircuitPython-compatible I²C reads currently consume one sensor byte. A bytearray grows despite an empty selected slice, and a memoryview raises only after the bus transaction has begun.

Reject empty or reversed read slices before starting the transaction or writing the register address, matching CircuitPython's requirement for at least one input byte. Nonempty reads retain their ACK/NACK and STOP sequence. Both readfrom_into and writeto_then_readfrom are covered.

Validation: eight regression cases fail on unchanged main; four positive controls pass. The fixed branch passes all 12 new cases and 33 existing hardware-independent CLI, Pico and gas-sensor tests (45 total). Configured Black, Flake8, Bandit and pydocstyle checks, package and Sphinx builds pass; seven existing Sphinx warnings remain. No physical PSLab/sensor or full hardware-suite validation was performed. Developed and tested with Codex assistance.

Reference: CircuitPython I²C API. No matching claimed issue or overlapping open PR found.

Summary by Sourcery

Prevent empty I²C reads from starting device transactions while retaining existing behavior for valid reads.

Bug Fixes:

  • Reject empty or reversed I²C read slices before any bus transaction, preventing sensor bytes from being consumed or output buffers from being altered.

Enhancements:

  • Preserve existing behavior for nonempty reads, including effective Python slice handling and ACK/NACK sequencing.
  • Document the requirement that selected read slices contain at least one byte.

Tests:

  • Add regression coverage for empty, reversed, normalized, memoryview, and combined I²C reads, plus positive controls for nonempty reads.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • I2C reads now interpret buffer slice bounds using Python’s standard slicing behavior, including negative and out-of-range indices.
    • Reads that select no bytes now raise a clear ValueError before starting an I2C transfer.
    • Reads into nonempty slices continue to preserve data outside the selected slice and request the expected number of bytes.

Reviewer's Guide

Reject empty or reversed I²C read slices before device commands or transactions begin, while preserving existing behavior for valid reads. New tests cover buffer types, both read APIs, bus-state safety, and ACK/NACK/STOP sequencing.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

I2C.readfrom_into and I2C.writeto_then_readfrom normalize selected buffer slices using Python slice semantics. Both raise ValueError when the normalized slice selects no bytes. Tests cover empty and nonempty reads.

Changes

I2C Empty Read Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Normalize and validate I2C read slices
pslab/bus/busio.py, tests/test_i2c_empty_reads.py
Both read methods normalize slice bounds and reject slices that select no bytes. Tests check errors, buffer contents, bus state, sensor reads, and command sequences across buffer types and slice bounds.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 64583

The reviewed read paths reject empty selections and preserve the selected destination slice for nonempty reads. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 83323

The change rejects zero or negative requested read lengths before starting a device transaction. Valid transaction ordering remains unchanged, and no new access or authority is introduced. Slice-boundary and exceptional-cleanup limitations remain, but they predate this PR.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is the caller-selected input buffer and peripheral transaction through the existing I2C connection. Downstream application, tenant or deployment exposure is not established by the supplied relationship evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-provided bounds determine the requested read length. The added control rejects nonpositive arithmetic lengths before bus mutation, but positive arithmetic lengths can still describe an empty effective slice. For example, start 5 and end 6 on a three-byte buffer passes the guard. This bypass of the intended slice precondition also existed at the base revision.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new rejection path creates no transaction requiring cleanup. Once a transaction starts, the existing methods still reach STOP only through normal execution; read or buffer-assignment exceptions can skip cleanup. The base has the same exceptional-path structure, so this is an unchanged failure-containment limitation rather than a PR-introduced concern.

**Clipped reads consume sensor data**

When explicit read bounds have a positive width but Python clips the selected buffer slice to empty or shorter than that width, `bytes_to_read` stays positive, so the guard passes and `readfrom_into` or `writeto_then_readfrom` starts the I2C transaction and consumes sensor bytes. Assignment can grow a bytearray or raise for a memoryview before `_stop`; the combined method also sends its output bytes before the failure.

Validate the selected slice length against `bytes_to_read` and reject mismatched bounds before starting the transaction.
