Summary

Upgrade MySQL from 8.0 to 8.4 (LTS) to match prod (now on 8.4.11).

  • docker-compose.yml: the db service now uses mysql:8.4, and --default-authentication-plugin=mysql_native_password is replaced with --mysql-native-password=ON.

Why --mysql-native-password=ON

  • MySQL 8.4 removed --default-authentication-plugin: the server refuses to start if it is passed, so the old flag has to go.
  • 8.4 also ships the mysql_native_password plugin disabled. Local volumes created by the 8.0 container were initialized with --default-authentication-plugin=mysql_native_password, so their accounts use that plugin. Without the flag, the server starts but the app cannot connect: ERROR 1524 (HY000): Plugin 'mysql_native_password' is not loaded.
  • --mysql-native-password=ON only loads the plugin, so existing volumes keep working with no data reset. New volumes still create accounts with the 8.4 default, caching_sha2_password, which is what prod uses.
  • Same approach as summit-api (chore(mysql): upgrade CI and local docker to MySQL 8.4 OpenStackweb/summit-api#651).

Tests

  • Initialized a volume with mysql:8.0 --default-authentication-plugin=mysql_native_password (accounts on mysql_native_password), then started mysql:8.4 on it: without the flag the app user gets ERROR 1524; with --mysql-native-password=ON it connects to 8.4.11.
  • No CI job uses MySQL in this repo; the change only affects the local docker stack.

Bump the mysql service image in docker-compose.yml from 8.0 to 8.4.
MySQL 8.4 removed --default-authentication-plugin (the server refuses
to start with it), so the compose command is dropped and the container
uses the 8.4 default, caching_sha2_password, same as prod.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2f32a

Developers with an existing local database volume may be unable to connect after this upgrade. The fix is a documented volume reset or migration step, and production and CI are not affected. This is low merge risk once the upgrade note is added or accepted.

Comment thread docker-compose.yml
Local volumes created by the 8.0 container were initialized with
--default-authentication-plugin=mysql_native_password, so their accounts
use that plugin. MySQL 8.4 ships it disabled, and those accounts fail
with ERROR 1524 (plugin not loaded). Start the dev container with
--mysql-native-password=ON, same as summit-api, so existing volumes
keep working. New volumes still create caching_sha2_password accounts.
