Closes #390

Summary

While a Sentient alarm rings, "stop", "stop the alarm", "turn it off", "I'm up", "snooze", "snooze for 5 minutes" or "5 more minutes" (chat, voice, Telegram/Discord/WhatsApp) is a quick command with no model call. Snooze is 9 minutes, the new Snooze length setting (chat.alarm_snooze_minutes), or what was said. With nothing ringing, the words go to the model as before (#175).

 fastpath.plan(text)
+ if pack.ringing(text) and reminders.ringing(): # only while an alarm rings
+    -> stop_alarm()      "Alarm stopped."
+    -> snooze_alarm(9)   "Snoozed until 7:39 AM."
   parse(text) ... # unchanged otherwise

The ring state used to live only in the window, so the engine now tracks it too:

  • Ringing: an alarm counts as ringing for 3 minutes after it fires, the same as the window's chime, until it's stopped or snoozed.
  • Schema: new reminders.stopped_at column, plus snoozed_from on the alarm a snooze creates.
  • Engine: ReminderService.ringing() / stop() / snooze(), tools stop_alarm(label) and snooze_alarm(minutes) (internal, write), and POST /api/reminders/{id}/stop|snooze.
  • Banner: gains Snooze. Stop now tells the engine too. Banner state follows reminder.updated: a snooze from anywhere turns it into "Snoozed until 6:42 PM" with Turn off and Hide, and a stop from anywhere hides it.
  • Messaging apps: quick commands already run there through run_turn, so this needed no channel code. There's a Telegram test for it.

Evidence

Real engine from this branch, fresh SENTIENT_HOME, port 8786, driven over /ws:

  • set an alarm in 1 minute called standup → quick, Standup alarm set for 1 minute from now, at 6:24 PM.
  • Rang at 18:24:27. snooze → tool_call snooze_alarm {"minutes": 9} → Snoozed until 6:33 PM. (118 ms). Log: quick command: alarm_snooze (en) done in 105 ms with no model call. Events came in this order: the new alarm (snoozed_from = the old one), then the old one with stopped_at.
  • The snoozed alarm rang again at 18:33:27, exactly 9 minutes later. stop → tool_call stop_alarm {} → Alarm stopped. Log: quick command: alarm_stop (en) done in 558 ms with no model call.
  • Nothing ringing, stop the alarm on claude-code/sonnet: the model answered. It called stop_alarm, got No Sentient alarm is ringing right now., and said "No alarm is currently ringing on my end."
  • Nothing ringing, stop the alarm on qwen3:8b (under the Ollama lock): this reached the model, which called stop_alarm {"label": ""} and replied "No alarm is currently ringing. If you need to stop a specific alarm, provide its name or check your reminders list."
    • Fix found by this run: with an argument-free stop_alarm, qwen3:8b said in its thinking that it would call the tool, then sent an empty answer twice. Giving the tool an optional label argument fixed it.
  • While ringing, a free-form "ugh, that standup alarm is so loud, can you make it be quiet for a few minutes" on sonnet doesn't match the quick grammar. The model called snooze_alarm {"minutes": 5}.

Screenshots were taken with smoke.mjs on a Maya Rao seeded home. The app's own engine was driven over /ws during a long settle delay: set an alarm, let it ring, say "snooze".

  • While ringing: the banner reads "Alarm: standup It's 6:31 PM." with "Ringing", Snooze and Stop.
  • After saying "snooze" in chat: the banner reads "Alarm: standup Snoozed until 6:42 PM", with the alarm-snooze icon (not animated), Turn off and a Hide (X) button.

Tests:

  • New tests/test_ringing_alarm.py covers:
    • stop and snooze phrasings, and phrasings that never count
    • snooze with no model, 9 minutes, snoozed_from, and the event order
    • the snooze rings again and stop silences it
    • the setting versus the minutes said
    • nothing ringing, or an alarm older than 3 minutes: goes to the model
    • another alarm's name: not a quick command
    • a Never rule: goes to the model
    • the model tools
    • stop silences every ringing alarm
    • REST 404, 409 and 400
  • New Telegram test: snooze, then stop, with no model.
  • Full suite and ruff are clean. Desktop typecheck and build are clean.

Merge Danger

Door: two-way. The two new columns are additive (ensure_column). Nothing is removed or reinterpreted.

Blast Radius: small. The only behaviour change outside a ringing window is two new tools in the reminders plugin, which the model may now call for "stop the alarm". The tool says it isn't for a house alarm, and its error names Sentient, so a model with Home Assistant can still move on to the house alarm (#175). Inside the 3-minute ring window, a bare "stop" or "cancel" in any chat stops the alarm instead of reaching the model.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Stop or snooze a ringing alarm with quick commands in chat, by voice, or through Telegram, Discord, and WhatsApp.
    • Snoozes last 9 minutes by default. Specify a duration, or change the default in Settings (1–60 minutes); custom snooze durations can be 1 minute to 3 hours.
    • Use the alarm banner to snooze a ringing alarm, see when a snoozed alarm will ring again, or turn it off.
    • Stop or snooze alarms through the REST API.
    • When no alarm is ringing, quick commands continue to be handled by the assistant.

While a Sentient alarm rings, "stop", "stop the alarm", "turn it off", "snooze" or "snooze for 5 minutes" in a chat,
by voice or in a messaging app is a quick command with no model call. Snooze is 9 minutes, chat.alarm_snooze_minutes,
or the minutes said. With nothing ringing the words go to the model as before (they may mean a house alarm, #175).
The engine now knows which alarm rings (3 minutes after it goes off, until stopped or snoozed); the banner gets a
Snooze button, tells the engine about Stop, and follows stops and snoozes made anywhere else. Closes #390.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds quick commands, tools, REST endpoints, and desktop controls to stop or snooze ringing alarms. Snoozes use a configurable default duration. When no alarm is ringing, the phrases continue to the assistant.

Changes: Ringing Alarm Controls

Layer / File(s) Summary
Reminder lifecycle and persistence
sentient/reminders/schema.sql, sentient/reminders/service.py, tests/test_ringing_alarm.py
Reminder records gain stop and snooze fields. ReminderService identifies ringing alarms, records stops, and creates linked replacement reminders. Tests cover snooze timing and reminder state.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to bc675

A named snooze can affect the wrong alarm, and a failed desktop Stop or Snooze can leave the alarm hidden without completing the requested action. These behaviors should be fixed before merging; explicit zero-minute REST requests should also be rejected as documented.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to bc675

The new alarm controls retain authentication and approval checks. The main design risk is recovery: an interruption during snoozing can leave the original alarm stopped without saving its replacement. The demonstrated impact is limited to alarm behavior within one installation.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Snooze does not persist the original stop and replacement alarm as one recoverable transition. Interruption after the stop commits but before the replacement commits can leave the original excluded from ringing with no replacement scheduled. Conditional claims prevent duplicate ownership, and ordinary add exceptions restore the original, but neither protects this process-death window. This is a bounded persistence and rollback concern, not a demonstrated security exploit.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Alarm selection is installation-wide, not filtered by conversation or channel. Unqualified Stop can stop every ringing alarm; unqualified Snooze replaces the newest and stops the others. Existing base tools already listed and cancelled scheduled reminders across the same store. The evidence does not establish separate tenants within that store.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The reminder router retains the shared token-authentication dependency. Paired-group messages from non-owner senders return before command execution. Quick commands check registered-tool visibility and approval eligibility, and execute through the normal tool runner; internal-write classification does not bypass configured approval predicates.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The material failure-containment gap is the persisted partial snooze transition, not demonstrated privilege escalation. Normal exception compensation and single-owner claims reduce ordinary failure and concurrency risks, but do not make recovery from process interruption atomic.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Persist the original stop and replacement creation in one transaction, publishing updates after commit, or use an explicitly recoverable pending transition. This would make interruption recovery preserve either the original ringing state or a scheduled replacement.

Remove the 20-row cap from ringing().

A generic stop command must stop every ringing alarm. With more than 20 alarms, ringing() returns only the newest 20, so older alarms remain active. Generic snooze can also leave older alarms active when enough alarms remain after the snoozed alarm is claimed.

desktop/src/stores/alarm.ts:121-126
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the banner as a silent retry state until Stop succeeds.

The desktop Stop action must silence the chime immediately, but it should keep the banner and its Stop control while api.reminders.stop(id) is pending. If the request fails, the user needs a visible retry control. Clear the banner only after success or HTTP 409. Preserve the existing three-minute timeout.

Restore the local alarm when optimistic snooze fails.

The desktop contract is optimistic: the Snooze action silences the alarm before it contacts the engine, as documented for AlarmState.snooze and implemented by the comparable Stop action. Do not move silence() into the success handler.

When api.reminders.snooze() rejects, restore the captured ringing state if no newer alarm is active. This keeps the alarm silent while restoring the banner and its retry controls. Leave the existing success handler unchanged.

Restore the alarm if snooze is cancelled.

After _claim commits stopped_at, cancellation during self.add(...) bypasses except Exception. The original alarm can remain stopped without a replacement. Make the claim and replacement atomic, or ensure cancellation restores the claim before it propagates. The earlier review addressed ordinary exceptions; cancellation remains uncovered.

Do not treat an explicit zero-minute snooze as a missing duration. The client drops 0, and the supplied REST route replaces 0 with the configured default. Both paths can snooze an alarm when the documented contract requires a 400 response.

  • desktop/src/lib/api.ts#L910-L910: send { minutes } whenever minutes !== undefined.

Review comment at @desktop/src/lib/api.ts at line 910:
Update the snooze method to include minutes whenever it is not undefined,
preserving explicit zero values. In the REST route documented in docs/API.md at
lines 3428-3429, default only when the duration is absent so zero remains
subject to the documented range validation.

Pass the named alarm to the snooze operation.

Language.ringing supports named snoozes, but _ringing_plan only uses cmd.which for validation. It calls snooze_alarm without the selected alarm, so a named snooze can affect the default ringing alarm instead.

Pass the matched reminder ID through snooze_alarm to svc.snooze(..., reminder_id=...).

Review comment at @sentient/agent/fastpath/base.py at line 32:
Update `_ringing_plan` to pass the reminder ID matched from `cmd.which` through
`snooze_alarm` to `svc.snooze(..., reminder_id=...)`, so a named snooze targets
the selected alarm rather than the default.

Saying "stop the alarm" in chat doesn't silence a ringing alarm
