What

For "Track and tell me when a new event is added", qwen3:8b's task-creation step often gives the page watch a triggered schedule (home_assistant, gcalendar, or a made-up custom source). The planner keeps triggered schedules as they are, so the watch only ever ran when a smart-home or calendar event arrived and never checked the page.

Planning now repairs that schedule, next to #375's every_run rule (built on #379, which is on main):

  • scripts.polls_the_web(tools): the script (or the AI-run task that replaced a rejected one) uses web_fetch, web_search, news_search or news_top_headlines.
  • scripts.trigger_is_real(schedule, code, request): the trigger is real when the code reads trigger_event (parsed, so a comment or string that only mentions it doesn't count; review fix), or the request names the trigger's app ("email", "inbox", "calendar", "meeting", "door", "lights", "webhook"...). "Tell me when a new event is added" does not count as naming the calendar.
  • TaskService._web_watch_schedule: a web check with a trigger that isn't real becomes recurring: the interval the request says (spoken_interval), else the planner's daily or weekly schedule, else interval 60. It ignores a planner interval nobody asked for, because qwen3:8b proposes 5 minutes. A log line names the dropped trigger.

I chose to repair the schedule rather than reject it: the right answer is deterministic, so a second planner round would only cost time on a small model.

This doesn't touch #387's code paths (planner_default, _default_condition, the any-change words). The new code is a separate block in _plan after the existing schedule handling, plus new helpers at the end of the rules section in scripts.py.

Docs: docs/API.md (the task section's "triggered schedules stay triggered" note and the script-jobs planner rules in section 16) and CHANGELOG.md.

Tests

  • tests/tasks/test_watch_schedule.py (11 tests):
    • trigger_is_real cases.
    • A calendar trigger on a page watch becomes hourly.
    • The user's "every 30 minutes" is kept.
    • A triggered schedule the planner proposes is repaired. An unasked 5-minute interval becomes hourly, and the planner's daily 08:00 is kept.
    • A gmail trigger the user asked for stays.
    • A script that reads trigger_event and no web keeps its trigger.
    • Without the service change, 3 of them fail.
  • Full suite: 2232 passed, 3 skipped. Ruff clean.

Real test (qwen3:8b, Ollama lock held, engine on port 8784, fresh home)

A local page http://192.168.1.2:8776/events.html (Riverside Library events, 5 items) served from the LAN IP. Each prompt was created with POST /api/tasks; the run waited for planning to finish before the next one.

# Request Trigger qwen3:8b gave Saved schedule
t1 Track http://192.168.1.2:8776/events.html and tell me when a new event is added custom recurring interval 60
t2 same home_assistant recurring interval 60
t3 same home_assistant recurring interval 60
t4 same home_assistant recurring interval 60
t5 same home_assistant recurring interval 60
k1 Let me know when http://192.168.1.2:8776/events.html lists a new event. custom recurring interval 60
k2 Keep an eye on http://192.168.1.2:8776/events.html and tell me if a new event shows up (none, planner proposed 5 min) recurring interval 5

All 7 are task_type: "script", noteworthy, with web_fetch code that returns the whole content. 6 of 7 needed the repair, for example:

INFO sentient.tasks.service: web check for task a3bb5cbf... had a custom trigger it never uses, checking on a timer instead
INFO sentient.tasks.service: web check for task 9ed3fe65... had a home_assistant trigger it never uses, checking on a timer instead

An earlier round on the first version of this change (before the "ignore an unasked interval" tweak) gave the same result: 7 of 7 recurring, 6 repaired. For comparison, #375's real test on main saved {"type": "triggered", "source": "gcalendar"} and {"type": "triggered", "source": "custom"} for these same phrasings.

It notices. I approved t1 (active, interval 60) and ran a check (outcome: baseline). I then added <li>Nov 16: Watercolour workshop for beginners</li> to the page and ran another check:

latest check: {"outcome": "changed", "note": "A new event titled 'Watercolour workshop for beginners' was added"}
notification: title "Track HTTP Page for New Events", message "A new event titled 'Watercolour workshop for beginners' was added"

The site log shows both fetches of /events.html from the engine.

Final round (commit e4e7d82), with a check that real triggers stay

Fresh home, Ollama lock taken before the engine started, roles ollama_chat/qwen3:8b.

# Request Result
t1-t5 Track http://192.168.1.2:8776/events.html and tell me when a new event is added all 5: script, noteworthy, web_fetch of the whole page, recurring interval 60 (qwen gave home_assistant 5 times; all 5 repaired)
m1 Whenever I get an email from billing@riverside.example, check .../status.html and tell me what it says kept {"type": "triggered", "source": "gmail", "event": "new_email", "filter": {"from": "billing@riverside.example"}}
c1 When a new meeting is added to my calendar, check .../status.html and tell me if the library is open kept {"type": "triggered", "source": "gcalendar", "event": "new_event"}

qwen3:8b planned m1 and c1 as AI-run tasks (single), so their triggers were never in question. The unit tests cover the same requests as check scripts (a named app keeps the trigger).

I approved t1 (active, interval 60), ran a check (baseline), added "Nov 16: Watercolour workshop for beginners" to the page and ran another: outcome: changed, note: "A new event titled 'Watercolour workshop for beginners' was added", and a notification with that message. The site log shows both GET /events.html from the engine.

Note

k2's 5-minute schedule comes from the existing path (the task-creation step said "once" and the planner proposed 5 minutes), not from a trigger. A small model choosing a 5-minute interval nobody asked for is a separate question. This PR leaves that path alone.

Closes #389

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Page, search, and news watches that check the web now run on a recurring schedule instead of potentially waiting indefinitely for an unrelated calendar or smart-home event.
    • Watches use the requested interval when specified, retain an appropriate daily or weekly schedule when planned, and otherwise run hourly. Valid event-triggered watches remain event-based.

The scheduling step sometimes gave a page watch a triggered schedule (Home Assistant, Google Calendar or a made-up source), so it never checked the page. In planning, a check script that reads the web and has no real trigger (the code never reads trigger_event and the request doesn't name the trigger's app) now gets a recurring schedule: the interval the user said, else the planner's daily or weekly one, else every hour. Closes #389.

📝 Walkthrough

Task planning now replaces irrelevant triggered schedules for web-check scripts with recurring schedules. It uses a requested interval, a planner-proposed daily or weekly schedule, or a 60-minute interval. Relevant triggers and schedules for scripts that do not check the web remain unchanged.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to fda49

Some page watches that fall back to AI-run tasks may wait for an unrelated event instead of checking on a timer. Fix the fallback classification before merging, or accept this bounded gap.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to fda49

The change retains existing task permissions and approval controls. However, planning can overwrite a schedule edited while planning is underway, potentially replacing the user's event gate with recurring execution.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Schedule repair can overwrite an explicit schedule edit made while planning remains in progress. The planner classifies the original schedule, then persists its replacement while checking only task status. Unlike the base behavior for an originally triggered task, this can replace a newly selected event gate with recurring execution. Subsequent approval is counterevidence against immediate unauthorized execution, but it does not preserve the user's scheduling choice, particularly when plan approval is disabled.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed execution cadence applies to each task whose schedule is repaired, using that task's existing script or fallback plan and configured authority. The inspected change does not create new identities, credentials, tool grants, or cross-task targets.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Schedule repair does not replace existing planner normalization, script validation, or activation controls. For schedules that remain triggered, dispatch still checks enabled status, source, event type, runnability, filters, and per-task event deduplication.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The status guard prevents a planning result from being written after the task leaves planning, but it does not detect a schedule-only edit that leaves the status unchanged. This is the control-drift mechanism behind ARCH-SCHEDULE-STALE-WRITE, not evidence of a new privilege-escalation path.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Condition schedule repair on the schedule version used for planning, or preserve an explicit schedule edit made after planning began. This would keep deterministic repair from superseding newer user scheduling authority.

Explanation

The change satisfies #389. polls_the_web identifies the required web and news tools. trigger_is_real keeps a trigger only when the script reads trigger_event or the request names the trigger app. _web_watch_schedule repairs an unused triggered schedule to a recurring schedule. It uses the user interval, an applicable daily or weekly schedule, or a 60-minute default. The tests cover repair, interval selection, real triggers, and non-web scripts. The reported final qwen3:8b test ran the same page-watch request five times and saved a recurring schedule each time.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not treat “Email me” as a Gmail trigger source.

trigger_is_real matches email anywhere in the request. Therefore, "Email me when this page changes" matches a planner-supplied Gmail source even though Gmail is only the notification channel. _web_watch_schedule then skips repair and keeps the task triggered, so the page check does not run until a Gmail event occurs.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Recognize static getattr(tools, ...) calls during web-tool detection.

tools_named(code) only detects tools.<name> syntax. A validated script using getattr(tools, "web_fetch")(url=...) therefore produces no detected tools. The sandbox still dispatches web_fetch, but _web_watch_schedule treats the script as non-web work and can leave an unrelated triggered schedule unchanged.

Extend tools_named to extract only static getattr(tools, "...") names. polls_the_web will continue to classify only names in WEB_TOOLS, so unrelated tool calls will not become web checks.

Include normalized planner tools in the fallback web check.

When both scripts are rejected, _planned_script records only code-derived tools. The fallback plan can still identify the web plugin from the planner’s plan, but _web_watch_schedule checks only script_tools. polls_the_web can therefore return false, so an unrelated triggered schedule remains.

Pass the normalized plan to _web_watch_schedule and map its plugin IDs back to registered web tool names before calling polls_the_web.
