Improve deployment stability by adding health check endpoints [] - #385
This also refactors the deployment to use Quart for the servers (consistent with the AcknowlEDG API server) so that developers do not need to maintain knowledge of multiple WebSocket server patterns.
Additionally, management of process pool jobs has been improved so that a task taking longer than they are allowed, responding to a review no longer being monitored, or similar, are properly cleaned up without negatively impacting other tasks.
In a similar "reliability" vein, caps have been added to ensure input data stays within reasonable bounds to preserve service health.
Finally, a number of cleanup passes have been taken to improve code quality.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Reviews are queued while the publishing service is unavailable and reconciled when it reconnects.
A shared service endpoint provides health checks and optional webhook reception.
Clients reconnect automatically; batch clients can optionally retry when connecting to an older server.
Command output is capped while preserving useful portions, and long review titles retain their links when shortened.
Bug Fixes
Improved handling of cancelled or failed requests, including routing provider errors to the relevant reviewer.
Added safeguards against oversized workspace and CI artifacts; invalid test-suite names are rejected.
Processing attempts follow a backoff schedule, with cancelled or temporarily unavailable work refunded.
Documentation
Updated service configuration and deployment guidance for the shared endpoint and optional webhook setting.

Walkthrough
This pull request updates Forge publishing, serving, runner connections, and workspace processing. It also changes acknowledgement subscription and request handling, adds suite-name validation, narrows selected exception handlers, and improves asynchronous task and subprocess cleanup.

Shared serving and service configuration dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/{serving.py,config.py,service.py,webhooks.py,local.py}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/{compose.yaml,README.md,run-dev-oss-repo.sh}, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{conftest.py,test_containers.py,test_state.py}
Forge endpoints use shared Quart serving and health checks. The service bind and optional webhook setting replace the separate webhook bind. Container health checks and service dependencies use health endpoints.
Stored review state and processor lifecycle dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/db/store.py, dev_tools/pylibs/edgacknowledg/forge/processor.py, dev_tools/services/acknowledg-forge/tests/{fakes.py,test_state.py,test_safety.py}
The processor stores sections before publisher synchronization and delists reviews during teardown. Retry attempts can be started, refunded, and recorded separately. CI metadata and combined test-ID reads are bounded.
The publisher processes queued sync, delist, and prune operations and serves reviews from stored records. Tests cover queued updates, reconnects, delisting, and health checks.
Per-process dispatchers process queued requests, match replies by request ID, skip abandoned queued work, and retry process startup.

Handlers ignore requests without a reviewer ID and include that ID in identifiable error replies. The server forwards valid provider failures to the matching reviewer.
Suite names are limited to ASCII letters, digits, underscores, and hyphens, with a 64-character maximum. Configuration and test-pattern generation validate names.
Selected handlers catch Exception instead of catching all exceptions.
Async task and subprocess cleanup dev_tools/pylibs/edgutil/__init__.py, dev_tools/tests/test_edgutil.py, dev_tools/typecheck-python.sh
The event-loop helper waits for task cleanup, including tasks started during shutdown. A new helper terminates subprocesses after a configurable allowance.

Suggested reviewers:mborland, darkarc
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 7811a
Reviews served to AcknowlEDG can silently disappear after the publisher restarts its session, and some reviewer edit requests can fail without any reply. Fix these before merging. The remaining items are minor robustness gaps in connection and shutdown handling.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 7811a
The main risk is incomplete recovery when a publication request is accepted but later fails to apply. Network isolation and webhook authentication remain intact in the checked deployment, and worker request isolation improves. No introduced security vulnerability was verified.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Publication success now means queue admission rather than completed application. The consumer can partially apply a synchronization, log an exception, and discard the item after the client has accepted success. The processing owner consequently receives no application failure with which to drive retry or rebuilding. Reconnect restoration can repair state, but the checked failure path does not itself trigger that reconciliation. This weakens failure containment and the store-to-publisher consistency guarantee; it is not a verified authorization bypass.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Publication-state failures can affect reviews served by the deployment's shared publisher. The checked topology separates that component from forge credentials and database access; this is a deployment-wide publication consistency risk, not evidence of host-wide or cross-tenant compromise.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Before publication, section directories must be real directories beneath the review tree, with section roots and baselines beneath their home. Builder output is checked for links and non-regular entries before staging is installed. These controls constrain untrusted repository content independently of the publication queue.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Client locking prevents reconnect restoration, individual synchronization, and pruning from interleaving. Local restoration failures mark reviews dirty, while the single publication consumer preserves queue ordering and isolates application exceptions. These protections reduce races but do not report asynchronous application failure to the database owner.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give accepted publication changes an explicit recovery contract: application completion feedback, or retained desired state with retry and reconciliation after application failure. Preserve per-review isolation so one failed update cannot block unrelated reviews.

The new test covers only normal completion and the over-limit kill path. The cancellation path is the one that can hang. Add a test that cancels _communicate_bounded while yes runs. It must assert that the task finishes within a short timeout and that process.returncode is set. The test fails until the finally block kills the process.

Replace the fixed asyncio.sleep(0.2) with a deterministic yield.
The test uses the delay to let describing reach wait_connected. A fixed delay does not synchronize with that state. The task reaches _connected.wait() after one event-loop iteration, because no earlier step suspends. A single yield therefore gives deterministic ordering and removes the 200 ms of wall time.
♻️ Proposed fix
- await asyncio.sleep(0.2)+ # One loop iteration runs `describe` up to its wait for a connection.+ await asyncio.sleep(0)
Based on learnings: flag a test that relies on a fixed delay instead of synchronizing with the asynchronous background outcome.

Fail already-admitted jobs when every slot enters startup backoff.
A request can pass the admission check during the gap after backoff expires, then remain in self._jobs when every dispatcher fails to start and retries before consuming the queue. ProcessPool.answer and both handler loops have no deadline for this queued state. Drain and fail queued jobs when the last startup failure makes every slot starting_later().

Reconcile stored reviews when restarting publishing.
When a second publisher WebSocket sends different settings, _keep_publishing cancels the active publish task. The BatchClient context then stops the old session and removes its tracked reviews. The still-connected PublisherClient does not call _sync_all() again until its publisher WebSocket reconnects.
Therefore, if the queue is empty, the new session can withdraw previously served reviews and leave them unavailable until a later sync_one operation or publisher-WebSocket reconnect. Restarting publishing must reconcile the stored client state instead of only replacing the BatchClient session.

Pass a logger to config.errorlog, not None.
The comment says that Hypercorn logs through the process's logging setup. That is not what None does. Hypercorn's _create_logger returns None when the target is falsy. Logger.error then skips the message. As a result, every Hypercorn error log is dropped, in every container. This includes ASGI framework errors, lifespan errors, and connection errors.
If a logging.Logger instance is given, Hypercorn uses it unchanged. It adds no handler of its own, so records go to the root setup from logging.basicConfig, and they appear once.

Kill the process when async_terminate_within is cancelled during the grace period.
The function promises to kill a process that does not exit within allowance. That promise holds only for asyncio.TimeoutError.
If the caller is cancelled while wait_for waits, CancelledError propagates. The function has already sent SIGTERM at that point. It never sends SIGKILL.
A realistic trigger is a second SIGINT. _stop_asyncio_loop documents this as the way to "cut a stuck cleanup short". _communicate_bounded calls this helper from an except BaseException block. A child that ignores SIGTERM then outlives the tool and keeps writing to an unread pipe.
Kill on any exit from the wait that does not come from a normal process exit.

Make the cancellation assertions hold on Python 3.11.
The forge packages require Python 3.11 or later, so this test must pass on 3.11. On 3.11, _subscribe does not end cancelled in this test. The inner asyncio.wait_for returns the answer when cancellation arrives after the future is already resolved. _subscribe then returns the subscription ID normally and does not release it. Both assert subscribing.cancelled() and assert _released(session) == [subscription_id] fail there. Python 3.12 and later re-raise the cancellation, so the current assertions hold only on those versions.
Accept both outcomes:
🐛 Suggested fix
await asyncio.gather(subscribing, return_exceptions = True)
- assert subscribing.cancelled()- assert _released(session) == [subscription_id]+ if subscribing.cancelled():+ assert _released(session) == [subscription_id]+ else:+ # Before Python 3.12, wait_for returns the answer instead of raising.+ # The caller then owns the subscription, so nothing is released.+ assert subscribing.result() == uuid.UUID(subscription_id)+ assert _released(session) == []

Here are two intertwined high priority bugs from Claude:
High: one pull request can block all publishing
forge/publisher/client.py:243: _sync_all re-raises ServiceUnavailableError from a single review and gives up on the whole resync. If one review's sync always kills the connection, no later review gets synced and prune is never sent. The client reconnects about once a second and fails on the same
review every time.
forge/processor.py:77: MAX_TEST_IDS_BYTES caps the raw changes.elist size at 4 MiB. But json.dumps(ensure_ascii=True) turns each control character or U+FFFD into a 6-byte \uXXXX. An artifact full of such bytes produces a sync message of about 24 MiB, over the 16 MiB websocket limit, which triggers #1.
The same data also overruns a pool process's readline(limit=MESSAGE_LIMIT).
This allows tests to know when services are ready/pauses "docker compose up"'s
return until services are actually listening.
This also refactors the deployment to use Quart for the servers (consistent
with the AcknowlEDG API server) so that developers do not need to maintain
knowledge of multiple WebSocket server patterns.
Additionally, management of process pool jobs has been improved so that a task
taking longer than they are allowed, responding to a review no longer being
monitored, or similar, are properly cleaned up without negatively impacting
other tasks.
In a similar "reliability" vein, caps have been added to ensure input data
stays within reasonable bounds to preserve service health.
Finally, a number of cleanup passes have been taken to improve code quality.

If one review's sync always kills the connection, no later review gets synced and prune is never sent. The client reconnects about once a second and fails on the same review every time.
The only way one review could kill the connection was a message over the server's 16 MiB limit. _request now serializes the request and raises ValueError before sending it if it's over MESSAGE_LIMIT. That puts an oversized review in the per-review except Exception branch: it's logged, marked dirty to be rebuilt, and skipped. The remaining reviews are still synced, and prune is still sent.
forge/processor.py:77: MAX_TEST_IDS_BYTES caps the raw changes.elist size at 4 MiB.
_changes_test_ids still caps the raw changes.elist bytes, and now also checks len(json.dumps(test_ids)) against MAX_TEST_IDS_BYTES, raising a WorkspaceError if the test ids are over it as JSON. The 4 MiB cap now applies to the \uXXXX-escaped size that actually goes into the section's details. That leaves plenty of room under the 16 MiB MESSAGE_LIMIT, for both the websocket message and the pool process's readline.
As a backstop, anything else that ends up oversized is caught by the new client-side size check in _request (see the reply on client.py:243). It fails only that review and doesn't touch the connection.
test_safety.py adds a garbled changes.elist (b'\xff' * 5, under the raw cap but over it once escaped) with the cap lowered to 20, and checks that it's rejected.
