Yang! - Yet Another Bangs anywhere Firefox extension

Yang!

Yet Another Bangs anywhere extension

Available in the Chrome Web Store

1. What is a Bang?

Citing DuckDuckGo, who first introduced them back in 2008:

Bangs are shortcuts that quickly take you to search results on other sites. For example, when you know you want to search on another site like Wikipedia or Amazon, our bangs get you there fastest. A search for !w filter bubble will take you directly to Wikipedia.

2. How does the extension work?

Simply install the extension and use any of the supported Kagi Bangs. If you prefer DuckDuckGo Bangs, you can change them in the settings. You can of course also add your custom bangs!

Bangs can be used at the beginning or at the end of the query, e.g.:

!gm here to closest restaurant

is equivalent to

here to closest restaurant !gm

Bangs can also be triggered without any query, serving as a bookmark shortcut:

!weather

You can also activate the multi-bang mode in the settings to trigger multiple bangs at once:

!osm !gm !m Munich

5. FAQs

What are snaps?

Snaps allow you to scope your search to a specific site. Simply use the bang name with the snap symbol (by default @) and the search will be limited to the site the bang name points to. For example, !ddg !s !g @r linux resolves to the query linux site:www.reddit.com which will be opened in DuckDuckGo, Startpage and Google. You can change the snap symbol in the settings, or leave it empty to turn this feature off.

Do bangs sync across devices?

Yes... and no. Bangs will sync across all the Firefox desktop browsers in which you are logged in with your Firefox account. However, the sync between desktop and mobile is currently unsupported. As a workaround, you can create a backup on desktop and restore it on Android (or vice versa).

Why does Yang need permissions on a 300+ sites?

These are the search-engine sites that Yang supports and from which bangs can be triggered. Instead of requesting data access on all sites, we granularly specify only the ones we need. You can find which sites we request permissions for in the manifest.json. Most of them are Google's and SearX(NG)'s domains.

Why is it not allowed to set an about: page as the target URL?

This restriction comes from the browser itself. about: pages are considered privileged URLs and are not allowed for security reasons (docs).

Does Yang collect any data?

Yang does not collect any kind of data and never ever will!
