Skiff

Your RomM library, on your PSP. Browse, download, play.

CI Latest release MIT License

Warning

Early development. Skiff browses and downloads your RomM library on a real PSP, but expect rough edges, and copy PSP/SAVEDATA/ to your computer before you try save sync. Follow the roadmap or watch releases.

Today, getting a game onto a PSP means downloading it on a computer, plugging in a USB cable, copying the file to the right folder and unplugging again. Skiff does it from the PSP itself: pick a game from your RomM library and it lands on the Memory Stick, ready to play.

Skiff is an independent project. It is not made by or affiliated with the RomM team or Sony.

What it will do

Now Later
Browse your RomM PSP library with installed / not installed status ✅
Download PSP games (ISO, CSO) to ms0:/ISO/, resuming broken downloads ✅
Pair with RomM by approving a code in the web UI (no typing tokens) ✅
HTTPS, your own certificate authority, and client certificates (mTLS) ✅
Cover art beside each game's details, kept on the Memory Stick (0.3.0) ✅
A game's facts and description from RomM beside its cover, the description scrolling (0.6.0) ✅
Favourites and collections from RomM, and "download all" for either (0.4.0) ✅
Sync PSP saves with RomM: one-sided changes sync on their own, and Skiff asks only when it cannot safely choose (0.4.0) ✅
Get games sent from RomM's web UI (Install on device, RomM 5.4) (0.5.0) ✅
PSP games stored as CHD, converted to CSO by RomM 5.4 as they download (0.7.0) ✅
PS1 games ✅
Retro systems through PSP emulators (NES, SNES, GBA…) ✅

Saves go to the same RomM slot where RomM clients such as Argosy keep PPSSPP's saves, and a real PSP and PPSSPP 1.20.4 load each other's saves (checked with one game). RomM's in-browser player uploads no PSP saves (a game's own save data) to RomM. See Sync saves.

What you need

  • A PSP (any model) already running custom firmware. Skiff is tested on ARK-5 with firmware 6.61; installing custom firmware is up to you and not covered here.
  • A Wi-Fi network the PSP can join. The PSP is old: it needs 2.4 GHz, 802.11b and WPA (not WPA2-only or WPA3). The Wi-Fi guide shows how to set up a safe one.
  • A RomM server, version 5.3 or newer (5.4 or newer to sync saves and to get games sent from its web UI).
  • Games you own. Skiff does not provide games.

New to all this? Start with the step-by-step guide. It assumes no technical background.

Quick start (for people who have done this before)

  1. Download skiff-<version>.zip from Releases.
  2. Unzip it at the root of the Memory Stick. You should get PSP/GAME/Skiff/EBOOT.PBP.
  3. On the PSP: Game → Memory Stick → Skiff.

Documentation

  • User guide: firmware, Wi-Fi, installing, connecting to RomM, secure connections, syncing saves, troubleshooting, FAQ.
  • Developer docs: architecture, toolchain, debugging over USB, testing, adding a platform, roadmap.

Contributing

Bug reports, platform requests and pull requests are welcome. See CONTRIBUTING.md. Security problems: see SECURITY.md.

Credits

  • RomM, the library server Skiff talks to.
  • pspdev, the open-source PSP toolchain.
  • Grout and RomM Vita, RomM clients for other handhelds that showed the way.
  • pkgi-psp, which proved HTTPS downloads work on a PSP.
