feat(cli): agent-friendly onboarding with non-interactive init - #449
devspace init could only be answered through interactive prompts, so nothing could set DevSpace up without a person at the keyboard. In a non-interactive shell, an unconfigured devspace serve just pointed back at that same interactive init.
init now takes ordinary options that answer its questions: --providers, --public-url, --roots, plus --yes for the defaults, --force, and --json. There is no mode flag. Subagents are always set up, and a public URL is the only thing an MCP host adds, so the setup is inferred from what you pass. devspace init --yes sets up subagents, and devspace init --public-url <origin> --roots ~/work also serves an MCP host. Without a terminal, init takes the same defaults the prompts preselect: configured or detected providers, saved roots or the current directory, and the saved public URL. Bad input fails before anything is written. Unknown providers list the known ones, --public-url rejects a trailing /mcp, and --roots without a public URL is an error. The prompts and the flags share one step that writes config and auth. With a public URL, --json reports the MCP URL and owner password, the same password the interactive flow prints on screen. The tunnel and approving the host connection stay with the user.
The CLI reference documents these as "init options", and the Quickstart gets a "Let your agent set itself up" section. The landing page gets a Copy prompt button beside "Read the docs", with stacked Codex, Claude, and Grok marks. It copies a prompt a coding agent can follow end to end: install with DEVSPACE_NO_INIT=1, run devspace init --yes, install the skill with the bundled devspace agents skill --install <agent> (local, no prompts), then run devspace agents targets.
This also fixes lint (readable spacing and a SAFETY note) in the website files from #448, which merged before its lint check finished, so main currently fails pnpm lint.
Verified with lint, the full test suite (574 tests, 0 failures), and unit tests for flag parsing and the inferred setup. I also ran the real binary against fresh home directories with no TTY (--yes, --public-url with roots and --json, a rerun, and the error cases) and checked that the interactive prompts still render under a pty. The website builds, and the new docs anchor resolves.
Added flexible devspace init setup with interactive prompts or noninteractive options for providers, roots, and public URLs. Existing configuration is preserved unless --force is used, and JSON output is available.
Added a landing-page option to copy a setup prompt, with accessible confirmation when copying succeeds.
Bug Fixes
Public URL validation now rejects /mcp paths even when followed by a query or fragment.
Documentation
Expanded CLI setup guidance and added quickstart instructions for noninteractive setup.
Setup could only be answered interactively, so an agent or script could not onboard itself, and an unconfigured `serve` in a non-interactive shell had no way forward. `init` now takes --use, --providers, --roots, --public-url, and --json; any of them, --yes, or a missing terminal skips the prompts, and unanswered questions take the same defaults the prompts preselect. Prompts and flags share one step that writes config and auth.

Beside "Read the docs", a button with stacked agent marks copies a prompt that has a coding agent install, configure, and verify DevSpace itself using only non-interactive commands.

Walkthrough
The init command now supports interactive and non-interactive setup. Flags and saved configuration determine selected providers and, when a public URL is used, roots. The CLI applies setup and reports results in text or JSON. Documentation and the landing page add agent setup guidance.

A rabbit taps a prompt to start, Then flags make setup play its part. Roots and providers find their place, JSON reports the setup trace. A copied note, a bright new sign, And version keys now change with time.
Readable-spacing fixes and a SAFETY note on the cloned docs action row. These files reached main through #448, which merged before its lint check finished.

`--use chatgpt|coding-agents|both` asked callers to name a mode in DevSpace's own terms. Subagents are always set up, and a public URL is the only thing an MCP host adds, so init now infers the setup: `--yes` takes the defaults, and `--public-url` (with optional `--roots`) also serves an MCP host. The flags are documented as ordinary init options rather than a separate mode.

allowed_roots, mcp_url, and owner_password inside an if (chatGpt) block.
- Around line 655-656: Update the init synopsis in the CLI help output to show
`--use` as optional and include the accepted `--yes` non-interactive form.
Preserve the existing options and their descriptions.
- Around line 205-213: Update the `flags.json` existing-install result in the
`already_configured` branch to include a `--force` hint, matching the guidance

selected setup options are applied.
- Line 227: In the non-interactive init flow, reject the default `process.cwd()`

users to restart a running devspace serve to apply the new settings; keep this
note out of JSON output.
- Around line 233-235: Update validateRequiredPublicBaseUrl to ignore trailing

https://host.example/mcp/ are rejected as endpoint URLs rather than accepted as

type assertion in the defaults configuration, explaining why the selected
literal destination is valid as an `OnboardingDestination[]`.
Review comments at @src/onboarding.ts:

runs only when coding agents are selected, allowing ChatGPT-only initialization
with an empty subagents configuration while retaining the error for flows that
require coding agents.
- Line 90: In parseInitArgs and parseDestinations, add a concise SAFETY:
justification immediately before each non-const type assertion, covering the
split result and the includes-based narrowing respectively.
- Line 91: Add a blank line before the multiline `value` declaration in the
surrounding onboarding code to satisfy the Oxlint padding rule; leave the
declaration and adjacent logic unchanged.
Review comments at @website/landing/content.ts:
- Line 17: Update the installation step in the landing-page content so it tells

installation when `devspace --version` works.
- Line 20: Update the Windows fallback in the devspace instruction text in
content.ts to use PowerShell-valid environment-variable expansion and
invocation, while leaving the Unix fallback unchanged.
- Line 25: Add a blank line after the multiline AGENT_PROMPT declaration and

…output
Setup without prompts now requires --roots for an MCP host unless roots are already configured, instead of trusting the directory init ran from. It reports where the owner password is stored rather than printing it, so the password stays out of tool logs. Boolean flags reject values (--force=false), /mcp/ is rejected like /mcp, an MCP host can be set up without any coding agent installed, and the output covers restarting a running server and updating an existing setup.

The prompt always runs the installer, which updates an older install that lacks the new init options, uses a PowerShell-valid launcher path, and keeps an existing setup. Copy buttons announce the result through a status region for screen readers.

Codex and ACP recordings embed DevSpace's own version in the initialize frame's clientInfo. The v1.1.0 bump made every replay fail on its first frame, so Smoke has failed on main since the release. Versions now compare by type only, like ids and timestamps; protocolVersion is a separate key and stays strict.

Add a --project note for Cursor in the copied prompt.
23-23: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Add a --project note for Cursor in the copied prompt.
Step 3 of AGENT_PROMPT lists cursor as a valid devspace agents skill --install target without --project. Without that flag, the CLI installs at user level. The Cursor installer rejects user-level installs and throws an error. A coding agent that selects Cursor from this list gets a failed step 3. Cursor setup stays incomplete until the agent reruns the command with --project. Use a Cursor-specific instruction that includes --project, and remove cursor from the generic list.
Suggested fix

Install the subagents skill for yourself: devspace agents skill --install <claude-code|codex|opencode|agents>. For Cursor, run \`devspace agents skill --install cursor --project\` from the project root.

Update step 3 in AGENT_PROMPT to remove cursor from the generic install targets
and add a separate Cursor-specific instruction to run the install with --project

Document that Cursor needs --project in the setup prompt.
90-90: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Document that Cursor needs --project in the setup prompt.
The setup prompt lists cursor as a valid devspace agents skill --install target and says every step runs without prompts. Without --project, the CLI passes project: false to the installer, and the Cursor branch throws. Add --project to the Cursor step, and state that it runs from the project directory.

Update the `devspace agents skill --install` setup prompt to list Cursor as a
separate command with the `--project` flag, and state that it must be run from
the project directory; leave the other install targets unchanged.

The /mcp check now runs on the parsed path, so a query or fragment can't smuggle it past validation. The non-interactive hint includes --roots, which a fresh install needs, and the interactive provider prompt is optional when an MCP host is being set up.

Re the follow-up on AGENT_PROMPT step 3: verified that --install cursor throws without --project. Fixed in f9d66f4: Cursor is dropped from the generic list and gets its own devspace agents skill --install cursor --project line, in both the prompt and the Quickstart.
