v2.5.4 (Oct 10, 2026)

NumPy 2.5.4 Release Notes

Released on 2026-10-10.

NumPy 2.5.4 is a patch release that fixes bugs discovered after the 2.5.3 release. Highlights are:

  • Many typing fixes and improvements,
  • A workaround for the MSVC 19.51 bug, see below.

This release supports Python versions 3.12-3.15.

Improvements

  • numpy.linalg.svd and numpy.linalg.lstsq now raise for inputs containing infinities instead of returning garbage results.

  • Fixed hangs in numpy.linalg.svd and numpy.linalg.lstsq for certain inputs containing infinities for recent versions of some LAPACK implementations.

  • numpy.linalg.cond now handles non-finite inputs more consistently.

(gh-32593)

StringDType hashing with NaN sentinels

StringDType instances with equivalent floating-point NaN sentinels now have equal hashes. Previously, distinct NaN objects could produce equal dtype instances with different hashes, causing dictionary lookups and set deduplication to fail.

(gh-32563)

Changes

MaskedArray resets a fill_value that cannot be represented in a new dtype

A fill_value copied from a source array is now reset to the default fill_value for the new dtype when it cannot be represented in that dtype. Previously the copied value could be stale: ufuncs that change dtype left the result holding a fill_value typed for the old dtype, which raised a TypeError only when something later validated it (such as .view()), and a floating point fill_value that overflows an integer dtype was kept as an out-of-range value together with a RuntimeWarning. Both now fall back to the default, including when a masked array is passed to MaskedArray with a different dtype. A fill_value given explicitly by the user is still validated and raises as before. This can now raise a ComplexWarning if the fill_value is complex and the new dtype is real.

This is a walkthrough of the NumPy 2.4.0 release on Linux, which will be the first feature release using the numpy/numpy-release <https://github.com/numpy/numpy-release>__ repository.

The commands can be copied into the command line, but be sure to replace 2.4.0 with the correct version. This should be read together with the :ref:general release guide <prepare_release>.

Facility preparation

Before beginning to make a release, use the dependency groups from pyproject.toml to ensure that you have the needed software. Most software can be installed with pip, but some will require apt-get, dnf, or whatever your system uses for software. You will also need a GitHub personal access token (PAT) to push the documentation. There are a few ways to streamline things:

  • Git can be set up to use a keyring to store your GitHub personal access token. Search online for the details.

Prior to release

Add/drop Python versions

When adding or dropping Python versions, multiple config and CI files need to be edited in addition to changing the minimum version in pyproject.toml. Make these changes in an ordinary PR against main and backport if necessary. We currently release wheels for new Python versions after the first Python RC once manylinux and cibuildwheel support that new Python version.

Backport pull requests

Changes that have been marked for this release must be backported to the maintenance/2.4.x branch.

Update 2.4.0 milestones

Look at the issues/prs with 2.4.0 milestones and either push them off to a later version, or maybe remove the milestone. You may need to add a milestone.

REL: v3.11.0

The largest change within this release is a complete overhaul of text and font processing. Through the use of libraqm, HarfBuzz, SheenBidi, and an updated release of FreeType, all text should now support modern font features, enabling full internationalization in all languages. Not all features of these libraries are supported yet, but we expect this work to enable further improvements in an easier manner.

Outside of text handling, there are several improvements to 3D Axes, performance, new accessible colour sequences, flexible figure management, and more. See the release notes for more information.

REL: v3.11.0rc2

This is the second release candidate for the meso release 3.11.0.

This release candidate fixes some problems with downstream packages, removes some missed deprecations, and corrects some additional minor bugs.

REL: v3.11.0rc1

After an extended development stretch, we are pleased to announce the first release candidate of Matplotlib 3.11.0.

Due to the update to the font rendering stack, we cannot guarantee that text will be bit-for-bit perfect with previous releases, so if you are using Matplotlib for testing, it may be necessary to introduce/raise a tolerance within your tests.

Outside of text handling, there are several improvements to 3D Axes, performance, new accessible colour sequences, flexible figure management, and more. Final release notes are still being curated, but you may browse the list of new features, API changes, and all issues/pull requests on the milestone.

Updates geopandas from 1.1.4 to 1.2.0

Release notes

Sourced from geopandas's releases.

v1.2.0

What's Changed

New features and improvements:

  • Static plotting in GeoPandas has been re-implemented. The new tooling shall be mostly backwards compatible while bringing a set of enhancements:

    • Categorical plotting now allows dict-based mapping of categories to colors and other styles.
    • Legends now reflect the geometry type and complete set of styles, not just a color.
    • Plotting of continuous variables with a classification scheme can now produce a colorbar instead of a categorical legend when using colorbar=True within legend_kwds.
    • vmin and vmax keywords are supported when scheme is defined, not ignored.
    • When using categorical colormap with categorical plots, colors are now assigned in order to optimize the contrast of the resulting map.
    • Colorbar size is automatically adjusted to be approximately the size of the plot.
    • Colorbar now indicates extensions if the vmin and/or vmax clip the values.
    • Legends are created automatically by matplotlib. This also means that you can create a single legend from a layered map by calling ax.legend() directly.
    • GeoPandas now labels axes using the information on units from CRS. This can be controlled via the add_labels keyword.
    • Static plots can include a basemap defined by the tiles keyword, exposing contextily.add_basemap from within the plot method. Requires contextily package to be installed.
    • scheme keyword can take a value "greedy" resulting in a greedy (topological) coloring where no two adjacent polygons share a color. Requires mapclassify and libpysal packages.

The related refactoring of the plotting infrastructure has changed the internal representation of the figure generated by GeoPandas. This can be considered a breaking change if you rely the composition of collections, as that has changed. A number of plotting-related bugs has been fixed along as a side effect. All changes are reflected in an updated user guide. (#3708, #3728, #3748, #3752, #3753, #3763, #3767, #3689).

  • GeoParquet improvements:

    • The upcoming GeoParquet 2.0 specification is now supported for both writing and reading (#3632).
    • read_parquet now support direct reading from HTTP/HTTPS protocols (#3699).
    • GeoDataFrame.to_parquet and read_parquet will now write and read attrs respectively (#3597).
  • Added geopandas.make_grid and GeoSeries.make_grid to generate a square or hexagonal grids covering the input geometry (#2062).

  • Added geopandas.read_file_info to expose information about file layers, including layer metadata (this is an alias for pyogrio.read_info) (#3759).

  • Add grid_size parameter to union, difference, symmetric_difference and intersection (#3593).

  • Document how to access the feature ID (fid) as the index when reading files
