What

Spell casts now wear mage weapons, and ArmourShop skins no longer make them wear in melee.

  • Casts wear the weapon. Every spent cast (success, overload fumble or rift fumble) takes cast.wear_per_cast durability (default 1) from the held weapon. Refused casts stay free. Creative casts are skipped.
  • Worn-out weapons refuse instead of breaking. The last point of durability is never spent. A weapon on its last point refuses spells (title + throttled chat line) and wand shots (title) until it is repaired, for example with a Magical Repair Kit. Nothing is spent on a refusal.
  • Skins no longer cause melee wear. Item damage on a stick or paper mage weapon is cancelled. A sword-based blade keeps its normal melee wear, but never loses the last point.

Why

  • Mage weapons use vanilla durability (MAX_ITEM_DAMAGE), but ResonanceCastListener.wearWeapon only ran for MMOItems custom durability (MMOITEMS_MAX_DURABILITY), so casts never cost anything.
  • MMOItems deletes an item whose vanilla durability runs out, because mage templates don't set will-break. A wand shot could therefore delete a wand. Keeping the last point avoids that without a template change.
  • ArmourShop skins write an itemsadder tag. ItemsAdder then wears the weapon on melee hits through its own PlayerItemDamageEvent, which it skips when the event is cancelled. On Main this is how GeoffLive's skinned Thales' Staff reached 169/2000.

Changes

  • gear/WeaponWear (new): durability left, worn-out check, and wear that stops at the last point.
  • listener/ResonanceCastListener: worn-out refusal before the element refusal; vanilla wear on spent casts.
  • listener/WeaponWearListener (new, registered with the MMO stack): cancels item damage on stick or paper gear, caps sword wear before the last point, and refuses worn-out wand shots (UntargetedWeaponUseEvent).
  • config.yml: cast.wear_per_cast: 1 (0 turns cast wear off). The setting is read on magic reload; a missing key means 1.
  • messages.yml: cast.worn_title, cast.worn_sub, cast.worn_chat. Bundled defaults are used when a live file lacks them.

Testing

  • Unit tests: WeaponWearTest (new), plus updates to ResonanceCastCoverageTest and ConfigurationTest. Locally all new and changed classes have full coverage. The Windows-only gear-store and file-permission failures are unrelated to this change; Linux CI is the gate.
  • TFMCDev01, bot DuraMage1 with the built jar (~/thales-test/castwear-test.js), 12/12 passed:
    • rune socketed; 3 successful casts wear 3; a refused cast (no resonance) costs nothing
    • wear_per_cast: 1000 stops at 499/500; the worn staff then refuses the cast with the "Worn out" title and is kept
    • Magical Repair Kit repairs it (499 → 0) and it casts again (+1)
    • wand left-click shot wears 1; a worn wand refuses the shot and is kept
    • skin-tagged staff: 5 melee hits, no wear; unskinned iron blade: 5 hits wear 5

…n melee

Mage weapons use vanilla durability, so the per-cast wear (which only looked at
MMOItems custom durability) never ran. A spent cast now takes cast.wear_per_cast
(default 1) vanilla durability from the held weapon, never the last point.

A weapon on its last point is worn out: it refuses spells and wand shots for free
until repaired, because MMOItems deletes a weapon whose vanilla durability runs out.

ArmourShop skins tag weapons as ItemsAdder items, and ItemsAdder wore them on every
melee hit. Item damage on a stick or paper mage weapon is now cancelled; a sword base
keeps its vanilla wear but never loses the last point.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Mage weapons now lose configurable vanilla durability after each cast, including fumbles.
    • Worn weapons preserve their final durability point and prevent further casting until repaired.
    • Added warnings and repair guidance for worn-out weapons.
    • Creative mode and zero-wear configurations are exempt from durability loss.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Prevented weapons from breaking or taking invalid damage during use.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for configurable wear, durability boundaries, worn weapons, and casting restrictions.

The change adds vanilla durability tracking for mage weapons. Cast wear is configurable, and worn weapons are refused for casts and weapon shots. New configuration and message entries support these behaviours.

WeaponWear calculates remaining durability and applies wear without spending the final point. WeaponWearListener cancels item damage that would exhaust the remaining durability and refuses shots from worn gear weapons. Magic registers the listener when MythicLib and MMOCore are enabled. Tests cover durability rules and listener behaviour.

Cast wear defaults to one point per cast. Configuration clamps negative values to zero. ResonanceCastListener applies wear outside Creative mode and refuses casts from worn weapons with configured feedback. Tests cover configuration, wear amounts, Creative mode, and refusal behaviour.

Worn weapons currently refuse casts without spending resources. Add an assertion for that guarantee; the coverage gap does not otherwise block merging.

ItemsAdder only checks whether its PlayerItemDamageEvent was cancelled and then
applies its own amount, so lowering the event's damage did not protect a skinned
weapon on a durable base. Wear that would reach the last point is now cancelled.

Assert resonance remains unchanged for a worn weapon.

This test does not configure a ResonanceSession or assert its value. It can therefore pass if the listener spends resonance before cancelling the cast. Add a session with known resonance and assert that both refused casts preserve it.

Applied the CodeRabbit nitpick in 7d89d71: the worn-out refusal test now registers the element, gives the session 20 resonance and asserts it is unchanged after both refused casts. (The suggested snippet needed ElementRegistry.register first, since setResonance ignores unknown elements.) Test-only change; drift is applied on SkillCastEvent, which never fires for a cancelled cast. Sol round 2 verdict: APPROVE.
