feat: prompt users on Bridge below 1.0.0-beta.20 to install the latest by hand - #1250
Bridge 1.0.0-beta.19 has an updater bug (it rejects any update archive over 16 MiB), so it can never update itself. Users on it must download and install the latest Bridge by hand once.
What
Warning banner at the top of the main area when the connected Bridge (/v1/statusversion) is below BRIDGE_MANUAL_UPDATE_BELOW (1.0.0-beta.20, one constant in src/features/bridge/manual-update.ts).
Prerelease-aware semver comparison; unparseable or missing versions show nothing. Bridge on beta.20 or newer is unaffected.
Per-platform install: macOS .dmg, Windows .zip (both from releases/latest/download/), Linux shows the existing install command. Unknown platform falls back to the releases page.
Dismissible until the panel reloads, so it returns while the version is still old.
Four new strings added to English and all 11 locales. Translations were written by Claude and want a native-speaker pass.
No changes to Bridge update endpoints.
Testing
npm run build, npm test (405 pass) and npm run size pass. Version comparison, threshold and platform links are unit tested. The banner was not checked in a browser here; the markup was only previewed by injecting it into the page.
Raising the threshold later needs the same prompt treatment for the next release.
Show manual-update notice for Bridge below 1.0.0-beta.20
Adds a dismissible banner in the main app content that appears while Bridge is active and its reported version parses below the 1.0.0-beta.20 threshold; unknown or unparseable versions do not trigger the notice
Implements semver parsing and precedence comparison (core, prerelease identifiers, build metadata ignored) in manual-update.ts, with tests in manual-update.test.ts
Banner content is platform-specific: macOS and Windows get download links, Linux gets an install command, and other platforms fall back to the releases page
Adds English strings for the notice and translates them to all 12 supported locales
Risk: the new banner renders above the news banner in App.tsx; if Bridge reports an old-but-unknown version string, users will not see the notice
…t by hand
Bridge beta.19 rejects update archives over 16 MiB and cannot update itself.
Show a dismissible banner with a per-platform download or install command
while the connected Bridge is below BRIDGE_MANUAL_UPDATE_BELOW.

The application now checks whether the active Bridge version is below 1.0.0-beta.20. When an update is needed, it displays localized instructions and platform-specific install details.

The change is mergeable with minor follow-up: malformed version strings can produce an unnecessary warning, and unusually large prerelease identifiers compare incorrectly. Neither establishes disruption of normal update guidance.

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR adds a new automatic, production-facing reinstall workflow for users connected to older Bridge versions, including status polling, platform-specific instructions, external download links, localized copy, and new UI. Its runtime impact is bounded but not an operator-opt-in change, so the workflow should receive human review.

src/features/bridge/manual-update.ts:20-22 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value
Tighten parseSemver to SemVer identifiers so malformed Bridge versions are rejected.
parseSemver accepts two forms that SemVer rejects. The core accepts leading zeros, so 00.9.0 parses as 0.9.0. The prerelease accepts empty identifiers, so 1.0.0-beta..19 parses with pre = ["beta", "", "19"]. The consumer passes status.version to needsManualBridgeUpdate without validation. A malformed status string therefore reaches the comparator and can decide whether the manual-update banner shows.
The divergence changes the banner for some inputs. For 00.9.0, the parser returns core 0.9.0, which is below 1.0.0-beta.20, so the banner shows. A strict parser returns null, and the banner stays hidden. The comment on compareSemver says it returns null when either side is not a version, so this input violates that stated contract. This requires a Bridge status that reports a malformed version, which the repository does not show Bridge producing. The impact is a dismissable banner, so this is a minor follow-up.
Suggested fix
- const match = version.trim().match(/^v?(\d+)\.(\d+)\.(\d+)(?:-([0-9A-Za-z.-]+))?(?:\+[0-9A-Za-z.-]+)?$/);+ const match = version.trim().match(/^v?(0|[1-9]\d*)\.(0|[1-9]\d*)\.(0|[1-9]\d*)(?:-((?:0|[1-9]\d*|\d*[A-Za-z-][0-9A-Za-z-]*)(?:\.(?:0|[1-9]\d*|\d*[A-Za-z-][0-9A-Za-z-]*))*))?(?:\+[0-9A-Za-z.-]+)?$/);
The tightened pattern keeps the existing test inputs valid, including 1.0.0-beta.19, 1.0.0-rc.1, 0.9.0, and v1.0.0+build5. It rejects leading zeros in the core and empty prerelease identifiers. Because status.version has no other validation, the fix has to live in the parser.

Update parseSemver to reject leading zeros in numeric core components and empty
or invalid prerelease identifiers, while preserving valid versions such as those
with a v prefix or build metadata. Keep the validation in the parser so
malformed Bridge status versions return null before reaching the comparator.
Minor · Compare numeric prerelease identifiers without Number. · manual-update.ts:43
Compare numeric prerelease identifiers without Number.
compareSemver converts numeric prerelease identifiers with Number. Distinct identifiers above Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER can round to the same value. For example, 1.0.0-beta.9007199254740992 and 1.0.0-beta.9007199254740993 both become 9007199254740992. The branch then returns 1 in both argument orders, so the comparator is not antisymmetric. SemVer compares numeric identifiers numerically, with no length limit, and the function's doc comment says it implements SemVer precedence.
The current caller is not affected. needsManualBridgeUpdate always compares against the fixed threshold 1.0.0-beta.20. A large numeric identifier rounds to a value far above 20, so the sign of the result stays correct.
🐛 Suggested fix
- if (xNumeric && yNumeric) return Number(x) < Number(y) ? -1 : 1;+ if (xNumeric && yNumeric) {+ if (x.length !== y.length) return x.length < y.length ? -1 : 1;+ return x < y ? -1 : 1;+ }
For valid SemVer identifiers (no leading zeros), a shorter numeric string has a smaller value. Equal-length strings compare correctly with lexical order. The existing test cases (beta.9 < beta.20, beta.21 > beta.20) still pass.

Update the numeric-identifier branch in compareSemver to compare digit-string
lengths first, then use lexical order for equal-length identifiers. Preserve
SemVer numeric precedence without converting identifiers to Number, including
values beyond Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER.
Line 44 checks only platform. A change that empties, removes, or alters the Linux command still passes this test. The macOS and Windows cases already compare the full object with assert.deepEqual. Compare the Linux object the same way so the test covers the install command.

⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
manualInstallFor constructs fixed macOS and Windows filenames under GitHub's latest/download endpoint; the manual-update path may point to assets that the latest Bridge release does not publish under those exact names.
The download fails instead of providing the installer needed to recover the old Bridge.
This can occur when: An affected macOS or Windows user clicks Download Bridge when a published latest release uses a different asset name.
