When the user asks to avoid doom loops, or a canary under a long max_new_tokens runs far longer than expected, the evaluation skill now adds vLLM's per-request repetition_detection field (512/32/3) through adapter_config.params_to_add, with guards for the vLLM version, matched baseline/candidate settings, MLflow recording and run validation. Looks ok to me!
Maybe also consider mentioning reasoning effort too high as a reason for termination. I guess that may be a more likely reason than low-bits quantization doom loops. Or mention neither directly so agent can explore. |

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not treat length as proof that the field was ignored.
The curl request repeats ha only in the prompt. The detector at the referenced vLLM revision checks generated output tokens, so a non-repeating completion can end with length even when the setting is active. (github.com) Treat this result as inconclusive, or use a probe that generates a known repeated completion. Otherwise, users can mistake an active endpoint for one that ignores the field.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not label a high repetition rate as a quantization finding by itself.
The validation guidance states that speed, queueing, concurrency, verbosity, and unresolved timeout effects can affect limit-hit rates. A higher candidate rate therefore requires further investigation before attribution to quantization.

A replay of vLLM's detector on Qwen3.8-Flash-Next BF16 and IQ-quantized eval outputs keeps 512/32/3 as the default: it catches 99-100% of IQ1 SciCode/GPQA loops but 85-90% of AA-LCR paragraph cycles, and ending the request also cuts loops a damaged model would have escaped, so IQ1 scores drop by up to 0.75 pt with it on. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Chenjie Luo <chenjiel@nvidia.com>
The IQ-quantized Qwen3.8-Flash-Next replay shows SciCode/GPQA loops are short (99th-percentile period under 160 tokens): 256 saves the same tokens as 512-4096 and fires on the same non-loop generations, at under half 512's scheduler cost (49 vs 117 us per request per step, measured on vLLM's own check). AA-LCR loops restate paragraphs with periods up to ~4K tokens, so it gets 1024 (91-93% caught, same BF16/IQ2 fires as 512); 4096 catches all but cuts at least twice as many IQ1 answers and costs ~1 ms per request per step. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Chenjie Luo <chenjiel@nvidia.com>
Keep only what changes agent behavior: the trigger, config with the AA-LCR override, one line of evidence for the values, and the guards. The full replay numbers stay in the PR description. Move the validation rule into run-validation.md and drop the launcher-workflow canary note that SKILL.md's trigger already covers. Document the complete configuration paths.
The guide calls these paths “top-level,” but the standard template places them under evaluation.nemo_evaluator_config, and the nel-next template places proxy.extra_body under the selected service (services.model in the example). A reader can therefore place repetition_detection outside the active configuration scope, so the harness can ignore it instead of forwarding it.

What does this PR do?
Type of change: new feature (agent skill documentation)
Damaged (often quantized) reasoning models can repeat one block verbatim until
max_new_tokens, so each such sample burns the full output budget and still scores wrong. A short eval that suddenly takes much longer under a longmax_new_tokensis the usual symptom. This adds
plugins/modelopt/skills/evaluation/references/doom_loops.md. When the user asks to avoid doom loops, or a canary runs far longer than its sample count implies, the evaluation skill adds vLLM's per-requestrepetition_detectionfield to every task throughadapter_config.params_to_add(proxy.extra_bodyon nel-next). vLLM then ends a request withfinish_reason: "repetition"once its output tail is one chunk repeatedmin_counttimes.The page also covers:
256/32/3by default,1024/32/3on AA-LCR. Chosen from offline replays of vLLM's owncheck_sequence_repetitionon finished eval outputs: 1,152 healthy public DeepSeek-R1 traces, and 44,832 Qwen3.8-Flash-Next generations (BF16 and five IQ1/IQ2 experts-only checkpoints, on SciCode, GPQA and AA-LCR).min_pattern_size32 is the false-fire lever.512/4/3fired on 4.2% of correct R1 math and 12.2% of complete code traces (1,000,000,000,0.333333333333,5 \times 5 \times 5), each a correct answer turned wrong. Atmin_pattern_size32 there were no fires on healthy R1 and one on 7,471 non-looping BF16 generations (an answer that was wrong anyway).max_pattern_sizesets the CPU cost and the longest loop caught. SciCode and GPQA loops are short (99th-percentile period under 160 tokens). There, 256 saves the same tokens as 512–4096 (within 0.2 pt) and fires on the same non-loop generations. AA-LCR loops restate whole paragraphs, up to ~4K tokens per cycle.max_pattern_size1024 on AA-LCR fires on exactly the same BF16/IQ2 generations as 512, and adds 4–8 ms per step at AA-LCR's 16–32 concurrent requests. 4096 catches every loop, but cuts at least twice as many correct IQ1 answers and costs ~1 ms per request per step.
repetitionstops are counted withlengthstops in run-validation's output-limit accounting and reported separately.--reasoning-config, Model Runner V2 only). The page lists it as opt-in only, since it can lift a damaged model above its real score.A short trigger in
evaluation/SKILL.md(Step 7), andrepetitionstops added torun-validation.md's output-limit accounting. The page itself keeps only the trigger, config, guards and one line of evidence; the numbers above are the full evidence.Usage
