Overview

The upstream nginx image installs several optional modules and curl that nothing built on this image uses. Their libraries account for most of the image's vulnerability reports, and are how the recent Brotli CVE got in. This removes them, so consumers only carry what nginx itself needs.

Changes

  • Removes the acme, geoip, image-filter, njs and xslt dynamic modules.
  • Removes curl.

Testing

  • Builds, passes nginx -t and serves HTTP 200; the proxy built on it passes its compose example.
  • High and critical findings drop from 59 to 43, including the one critical.
  • No consumer across the org loads these modules or runs curl.

Risk

  • Low. Nothing we deploy uses what's removed, and consumers only pick it up when they bump.
  • Rollback is staying on zappi/nginx:1.31.8.

The upstream image installs the acme, geoip, image-filter, njs and xslt
dynamic modules and curl, but no consumer of this image loads the
modules or runs curl at runtime. Their libraries are where most of the
image's vulnerability reports come from, including libxml2 via xslt
and libbrotli via image-filter and curl.
