Summary

macOS asks for permission every time an app reads or writes Documents, and CodexBar's default Telemetry Folder was ~/Documents/CodexBar Telemetry. Following the Telemetry Spec v1 change in GordonBeeming/bar-ui#22, the default is now ~/Library/Application Support/CodexBar/Telemetry, which isn't protected.

  • On launch, before anything is written, CodexBar moves its own codexbar-(metrics|logs)-YYYY-MM-DD.jsonl files out of the old folder into the new default. It only does this when no other folder was chosen: no stored telemetryDirectory, or a stored value equal to the old Documents default, which is cleared.
  • If a file of the same name is already in the new folder, the old file's complete lines are appended and the old file deleted. If the destination doesn't end in a newline, the old file stays put and merges on a later launch.
  • Other files are left alone. The old folder is removed only if it ends up empty; a .DS_Store doesn't count.
  • A failure is logged per file and never stops telemetry from writing to the new default.
  • AppSettings no longer registers the default path as a UserDefaults default. A registered default made an unset folder look like a stored one.

Test plan

  • swift build --build-tests has no warnings; swift test runs 99 tests with 0 failures; swift test --parallel exits 0
  • 10 new migration tests cover the default path, matching files moved, other files left, folder removal with and without .DS_Store, same-name merges, and a custom folder meaning no move; 3 new settings tests cover the stored-value cases
  • After release: on my Mac, the files end up in Application Support and nothing asks for Documents access

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Changes
    • New telemetry recordings are saved by default in ~/Library/Application Support/CodexBar/Telemetry instead of ~/Documents/CodexBar Telemetry.
    • On first launch, eligible telemetry files in the previous default folder are moved to the new location. Existing files are preserved where possible, and custom telemetry folder selections remain unchanged.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the README and telemetry guide to reflect the new default location and first-launch migration.

macOS asks for permission to use Documents, so the default is now
~/Library/Application Support/CodexBar/Telemetry, as Telemetry Spec v1
now says. On launch, CodexBar moves its own Telemetry files out of the
old Documents folder when no other folder was chosen, merges same-name
files by appending complete lines, and removes the old folder only if it
ends up empty.

📝 Walkthrough

Telemetry recordings now default to ~/Library/Application Support/CodexBar/Telemetry. On launch, CodexBar can migrate eligible recordings from ~/Documents/CodexBar Telemetry. Migration handles matching files, collisions, warnings, and pending files.

Changes: Telemetry directory migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Default telemetry directory
Sources/CodexBarCore/TelemetryModels.swift, Tests/CodexBarCoreTests/TelemetryTests.swift, README.md, docs/telemetry.md
The default directory now uses the Application Support path. The legacy Documents path is available for migration. The README and telemetry documentation describe the new default and first-launch migration.
Legacy file migration
Sources/CodexBarCore/TelemetryFolderMigration.swift, Tests/CodexBarCoreTests/TelemetryFolderMigrationTests.swift
Migration recognizes telemetry filenames with valid dates and skips symbolic links and other ineligible files. It moves files or merges eligible records into existing destinations, reports warnings, checks for pending files, and attempts to remove an emptied legacy folder. Tests cover migration, merges, cleanup, and retry behavior.
Settings and launch integration
Sources/CodexBar/AppSettings.swift, Sources/CodexBar/CodexBarApp.swift, Tests/CodexBarTests/AppSettingsTests.swift
AppSettings resolves a stored legacy default to the new default and tracks migration completion. App startup runs migration for the default telemetry directory. Tests cover migration, retry conditions, and custom telemetry directories.

If the old folder is temporarily unreadable, its recordings may be left behind without another migration attempt. This narrow case warrants a fix or explicit acceptance before merge.

🟡 Changes recommended

Migration retries can repeatedly access Documents, duplicate records after deletion failures, and follow a symlinked legacy folder.

Once none of CodexBar's Telemetry files are left in the old folder, a
flag records the move as done and later launches no longer look in
Documents. A symlinked old folder isn't followed, and a source file is
renamed out of the matching pattern before its lines are appended, so a
failed delete can't make a retry append them twice.

An enumeration error, such as Documents access being denied, was read as
nothing left to move, so the move was recorded as done and the files
were never moved. It now counts as pending; a missing or symlinked old
folder still counts as done.

This is an experimental Codex feature. Security reviews are triggered when:

  • You comment "@codex security review"

Once complete, Codex will leave suggestions, or a comment if no findings are found.

A crash after the source was renamed but before its lines were appended
left the only copy under a name nothing looked at again. The source is
now renamed to .merging while it is appended and to .migrated once done;
a leftover .merging file is merged again on the next launch and counts as
pending, and a leftover .migrated file is only deleted.
