Summary

The blocks-api skill now keeps itself up to date. A new scripts/skill-freshness-check.sh lives inside the skill directory (so npx skills add ships it), and SKILL.md gains a "Step 0" telling the agent to run it once before anything else.

What the script does:

  • Refreshes the installed skill with npx --yes skills@1.7.0 update blocks-api -y at most once every 24 hours. After a failure it retries 15 minutes later; after three failures in a row it backs off to one attempt per day. State is a small marker file under ${XDG_CACHE_HOME:-~/.cache}/blocks-skills/<hash-of-scope-root>/.
  • Resolves its own real path (pwd -P, so the ~/.claude/skills symlink is followed) and walks up to the directory that owns the .agents/ tree, then runs the update from there. With a skill name and no -g/-p, the CLI checks both the global lock and the project lock in the current directory, so one command covers both install styles.
  • Checksums SKILL.md, references/*.md and scripts/*.sh before and after. The CLI prints "Updated" for project installs even when nothing changed, so the checksum is the real signal. It also scans the output for failure wording because the CLI exits 0 on most of its own error paths.
  • Never blocks: no set -e, every path exits 0, nothing on stdout unless the skill files actually changed (then exactly one line the agent relays to the user). Missing npx, an unwritable cache dir, or an untracked install all skip quietly.
  • BLOCKS_SKILLS_NO_UPDATE=1 opts out, BLOCKS_SKILLS_DEBUG=1 logs every decision to stderr, and BLOCKS_SKILLS_NOW / BLOCKS_SKILLS_UPDATE_CMD / BLOCKS_SKILLS_ROOT exist for the tests.

Also in this PR:

  • scripts/skill-freshness-check.test.sh: a bash harness with a fake clock and a fake update command (36 checks covering first run, 24h throttle, 15m retry, daily back-off after 3 failures, success resetting the counter, non-zero exit, "not installed" output, opt-out, missing command, unwritable cache, stdout/stderr separation).
  • CI validate job: shellcheck over install.sh and skills/*/scripts/*.sh, plus a step that runs the test harness.
  • README: one line under Install about the daily refresh and the opt-out.
  • metadata.version bumped to 0.2.0.

Fixes #

How I verified

  • Installed blocks-api globally from GitHub and confirmed npx skills@1.7.0 update blocks-api -y with no scope flag finds the global install from ~ ("All global skills are up to date"), finds both scopes from a project root, and finds only global when run from inside the skill directory. That drove the walk-up-to-root logic.
  • Ran the script against the real global install through the ~/.claude/skills/blocks-api symlink: first run hit upstream and was silent (no change), second run skipped ("checked successfully 1s ago"), a run with the clock pushed 25h ahead checked again and stayed silent.
  • Ran it against a project-scope install in a temp dir: it ran from the project root and printed the one-line note because the upstream copy differed from the local one.
  • bash skills/blocks-api/scripts/skill-freshness-check.test.sh: 36 passed, 0 failed.
  • shellcheck clean on both scripts and install.sh.
  • npx skills@1.7.0 add . --list still lists blocks-api.

Known edge: the update overwrites the running script itself. Fine on Linux and macOS (the open file handle survives); on Windows Git Bash a locked file would just register as one failure and be retried later.

Checklist

  • npx skills add . --list lists every skill under skills/
  • Frontmatter name matches the skill directory and description says when to trigger
  • Examples use https://api.blocks.team and $BLOCKS_API_KEY; no real keys or internal hosts
  • Docs links resolve and the skill does not restate what the public docs already cover
  • PR title follows Conventional Commits (type(scope): summary)

Review triage

  • ✅ Picked: concurrent sessions can both run the update (severity 7 → 3), fixed in 5171765 with an atomic mkdir lock and a concurrency test.
  • ❌ Not picked: no update deadline on stock macOS (severity 7 → 2), already fixed in 2089876; the leftover cleanup (orphaned temp files if the caller kills the script, no test for the force-kill path) is out of scope.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Add scripts/skill-freshness-check.sh to the blocks-api skill. The agent
runs it once per invocation; it refreshes the installed skill via the
skills CLI at most once a day, retries failures after 15 minutes, backs
off to daily after three failures in a row, and always exits 0. It
prints a single note only when the skill files actually changed.

The update runs from the directory that owns the .agents tree so the
CLI sees both global and project installs, and the skill contents are
checksummed before and after because the CLI reports "Updated" for
project installs even when nothing changed.

Also add a bash test harness for the script, run it and shellcheck in
CI, document the opt-out in the README, and bump the skill to 0.2.0.

@blocks /claude why is the https://github.com/BlocksOrg/skills/actions/runs/37389236107/job/112032059059?pr=4 failing ?

That job is failing because of a CodeQL setting on the repo. Nothing in this PR's code causes it.

The error

The analysis itself ran fine. It failed at the end, when it tried to upload its results:

##[error]Code Scanning could not process the submitted SARIF file:
CodeQL analyses from advanced configurations cannot be processed when the default setup is enabled

Why

The repo has two CodeQL setups running at once, and GitHub only allows one:

  1. Advanced setup: .github/workflows/codeql.yml, added to main on 2026-10-01 in Add blocks-api skill and npx skills install scaffolding #1. That's the workflow behind this failing job. This PR doesn't touch it.
  2. Default setup: turned on in the repo settings on 2026-10-02 (state: configured, languages: actions, weekly schedule), the day after codeql.yml was added.

When default setup is on, GitHub rejects results uploaded by an advanced-setup workflow. So this job will fail on every PR and every push to main until one of the two is removed.

Fix (pick one)

  • Keep the workflow file: go to Settings → Code security → CodeQL analysis, open the menu next to "Default setup" and choose Switch to advanced, or disable default setup. No code change needed.
  • Keep default setup: delete .github/workflows/codeql.yml in a separate PR to main. Default setup already scans the same language (actions), so you lose no coverage.

The second option needs a separate PR to main and changes repo security config, so I haven't made either change. Tell me if you want me to open that PR.

You are seeing this message because GitHub Code Scanning has recently been set up for this repository, or this pull request contains the workflow file for the Code Scanning tool.

What Enabling Code Scanning Means:

  • The 'Security' tab will display more code scanning analysis results (e.g., for the default branch).
  • Depending on your configuration and choice of analysis tool, future pull requests will be annotated with code scanning analysis results.
  • You will be able to see the analysis results for the pull request's branch on this overview once the scans have completed and the checks have passed.

For more information about GitHub Code Scanning, check out the documentation.

The freshness check only applied its 120s deadline where `timeout` was
on PATH, which excludes stock macOS. Replace it with a bash watchdog:
the update runs in its own process group under job control, a sibling
subshell kills that group when the deadline passes, and a hit deadline
is recorded as a failure so the normal backoff applies. Expose
BLOCKS_SKILLS_TIMEOUT for tests and add a hang scenario to the harness
that checks exit 0, no output, a bounded wall clock, the whole process
tree being killed, and the 15-minute retry.

There are 2 inline review threads on PR #4, both from the bot reviewer and both on skills/blocks-api/scripts/skill-freshness-check.sh. Both are valid, but after a subagent investigated each one, both dropped below 5. I have not changed any code or touched any GitHub thread.

# Thread Reviewer My first score After investigation Valid? Status
1 Two agent sessions can both run the update at the same time (line 188) 7 5 3 ↓ Valid Open
2 No deadline on stock macOS because timeout isn't installed (line 155) 7 6 2 ↓ Valid when raised; fixed in 2089876 Already resolved

The other top-level comments aren't review findings: the PR-created notice, the CodeQL failure question (already answered), the code-scanning bot, and your two requests.

1. Concurrent sessions can both run the update (5 → 3)

  • The race is real. With 2 sessions started at the same instant, 18 of 20 trials ran the update twice, and 40 at once ran it 1–8 times. That matches the reviewer's result.
  • It needs a near-exact collision. The script records the attempt before the update starts, so a second session only gets through if it starts within about 5–10 ms of the first. Sessions 10–250 ms apart never collided (0 of 20 at every gap). An update is only due about once a day.
  • The usual result is a wasted fetch. The subagent read the source of skills CLI 1.7.0: it compares hashes and only reinstalls when upstream changed, so on most days both runs just print "up to date".
  • The worst case comes from the CLI itself. It deletes and recreates the skill folder and rewrites its lock file in place, and it treats an unreadable lock file as empty. A collision on the day a new version ships could interleave those writes and drop other skills' lock entries. A lock in our script reduces that risk but can't remove it; the CLI's own design causes it.
  • The fix is small. A non-blocking mkdir lock (skip if another check holds it, take over a lock older than 5 minutes) is about 10 lines. In a /tmp copy, exactly one update ran in 30 of 30 trials at 2, 10 and 40 sessions, and the existing 42 tests still pass. It would also need a concurrent-start test.

2. No update deadline on stock macOS (6 → 2)

  • It was valid against 94d50ae. Without timeout the update ran with no deadline. npm's own fetch timeouts cap part of the wait, so "many minutes" is more accurate than "indefinite", but it still broke the "never blocks" promise. That's about 6 against the original code.
  • The fix in 2089876 works. The 42 tests pass on bash 5.2 and on bash 3.2.57, the version macOS ships. A hanging update with child processes returned in 2.07s with nothing left running. One that ignores the normal stop signal was force-killed and returned in 3.07s. A fast update added no delay. It printed nothing when piped, run from sh -c or run in a terminal.
  • Small leftovers, none of which can block the agent:
    • If the agent kills the script mid-update, two temp files (.out / .out.timeout) stay in the cache directory forever.
    • No test covers the force-kill path.
    • Not tested on a real Mac, and shellcheck isn't installed here.

Next step

Tell me which to pick: 1, 2 (only the small cleanups, since the main fix is already in), both, or neither. Then I'll:

  • reply to and resolve each thread, explaining the new score for any you don't pick;
  • add a section at the bottom of the PR description with one line per item, marking each picked or not picked ("out of scope" where you give no reason);
  • commit and push the fixes you pick.

User Message:

go for the fix for 1 , continue

I've fixed issue 1 and pushed it to feat/skill-freshness-check as 5171765. Both review threads now have a reply and are resolved, and the PR description has the triage section.

The fix for issue 1 is in skill-freshness-check.sh:

  • The script now takes a lock before it reads the throttle marker and holds it until the update finishes. The lock is created in one step that can't race, and it is released when the script exits.
  • If another session already holds the lock, the script exits 0 straight away. It doesn't wait or touch the marker.
  • A lock older than the update deadline plus one minute (3 minutes by default) comes from a run that was killed, so the next run takes it over.

Tests: I added 7 checks to the test script, which now has 50. All pass, five runs in a row, and shellcheck is clean. Against the previous script, 3 of the new checks fail:

  • 10 sessions started at once run the update exactly once, all exit 0 with no output, and the lock is released afterwards.
  • With the lock already held, a run skips the update and leaves the lock alone.
  • With an old lock left behind, a run takes it over, updates, and releases it.

GitHub threads:

  • Concurrent sessions (picked): I explained the 7 → 3 change, summarized the fix and tests, and resolved the thread.
  • macOS deadline (not picked): I explained the 7 → 2 change: the finding was valid against the original commit and 2089876 fixed it. I marked the leftover cleanup as out of scope. The thread was already resolved.

PR description: a "Review triage" section with one line per issue (picked or not picked, with the score change) now sits at the bottom, just above the "Generated with Claude Code" line. The rest of the description is unchanged, so it still says "36 checks" in two places, which is now out of date.

Agent sessions starting within a few milliseconds of each other could all
read the marker before any of them wrote it, so each ran its own
`skills update` against the same install. Take an atomic mkdir lock before
reading the marker and hold it through the update; runs that find it held
skip immediately, and a lock older than the deadline plus a minute is taken
over. Adds concurrent, held-lock and stale-lock tests (50 checks).
