Adds optional public vanilla villagers that open the existing voting-site selection. The feature is disabled by default and does not add vote or reward processing. No Citizens, client mod or resource pack is required.

  • Enable VotingNPCs.Enabled in Config.yml, reload, and use /av npc create <id> [name], /av npc list, /av npc inspect <id> or /av npc remove <id>.
  • Persist up to 64 stable definitions in VotingNPCs.json through a bounded asynchronous file owner. Runtime villagers are nonpersistent and reconstruct lazily without loading chunks or scanning worlds.
  • Preserve normal vote-URL permissions and configured menus. Protect only exact owned entities, including incoming targeting and transformations.
  • Use region ownership for creation and entity ownership for cleanup. Creation, unload fences and reconstruction share the same occupied chunk bounds, including boundary positions. Rejected cleanup retains exact ownership and retries on lifecycle recovery before reconstructing a successor; repeated notifications coalesce. Capacity-blocked definitions receive a bounded, coalesced wakeup after an exact runtime reservation is released; failed or unloaded spawns do not create retry loops. Directory aliases retain exclusive file ownership; definition and lock files cannot themselves be symlinks.

Administration requires VotingPlugin.Commands.AdminVote.NPC or VotingPlugin.Admin; these also pass the root command gate. NPC-only permission does not grant other administrative subcommands. Missing configuration preserves existing behavior. No database migration or companion-plugin update is required. See the NPC guide. This is separate from the experimental GUI testbed.

Validation: mvn -B -f VotingPlugin/pom.xml clean package passed with 2,487 unit tests discovered: 2,486 passed, one skipped, zero failures/errors. All five packaged-artifact tests and all 47 NPC tests passed in that build; the 15 focused lifecycle tests also passed. Coverage includes real command matching, Bukkit permission inheritance, durable storage failure/recovery, directory aliases, cancelled/unrelated interactions, multiple players, replacement, transformations, occupied-chunk unloads, transient cleanup rejection/recovery, full-capacity replacement with a different ID, an unloaded current reservation releasing capacity for a different loaded target, bounded unloaded/failed creation, delayed creation and owner scheduling. Initial independent source review and corrected follow-up completed; hosted findings were addressed with focused delta inspection and regression tests. Exact-source and disclosure checks passed. Latest-head hosted clearance remains pending.

Native Spigot/Paper/Folia deployment and visual client checks have not been performed. During final Folia shutdown, rejected cleanup relies on nonpersistent entities being discarded at world unload; external hot-reload tools are unsupported. The JAR is 10,676,718 bytes, above the advisory 10 MiB target; no dependencies were added.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds opt-in voting NPCs. It stores validated NPC definitions and manages nonpersistent villagers across world and chunk lifecycle events. Administrative commands create, inspect, list, and remove definitions.

Changes: Voting NPCs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Definitions and persistence
VotingPlugin/src/main/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/npc/VotingNPCDefinition.java, VotingPlugin/src/main/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/npc/VotingNPCStore.java, VotingPlugin/src/main/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/npc/VotingNPCRegistry.java, VotingPlugin/src/test/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/npc/VotingNPCStoreTest.java, VotingPlugin/src/test/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/npc/VotingNPCRegistryTest.java
Adds validated NPC definitions and a 64-entry store with strict JSON and file checks. The registry serializes asynchronous changes through a bounded worker queue. Tests cover validation, persistence, recovery, and queue behavior.
NPC runtime and lifecycle
VotingPlugin/src/main/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/config/Config.java, VotingPlugin/src/main/resources/Config.yml, VotingPlugin/src/main/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/VotingPluginMain.java, VotingPlugin/src/main/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/npc/VotingNPCManager.java, VotingPlugin/src/main/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/npc/VotingNPCScheduler.java, VotingPlugin/src/test/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/npc/VotingNPCManagerTest.java, VotingPlugin/src/test/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/npc/VotingNPCSchedulerTest.java
Adds a disabled-by-default setting and refreshes NPC state at startup and reload. The manager schedules villagers in available areas, handles interactions and world or chunk changes, and retires runtime entities during cleanup. Tests cover runtime lifecycle and scheduler behavior.
Administrative commands and guidance
VotingPlugin/src/main/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/npc/VotingNPCCommands.java, VotingPlugin/src/main/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/commands/CommandLoader.java, VotingPlugin/src/main/resources/plugin.yml, VotingPlugin/src/test/java/com/bencodez/votingplugin/npc/VotingNPCCommandsTest.java, docs/voting-npcs.md
Adds create, list, inspect, and remove commands with permission checks and asynchronous result messages. Tab completion uses saved NPC IDs. The permission declaration, command tests, and feature documentation describe and validate these commands.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 70106

In a rare full-capacity case, a pending voting NPC may not appear until a later chunk load or reload. The feature is opt-in, so this is a small follow-up rather than a blocker.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 70106

The feature is disabled by default, bounds its stored definitions and live entities, and reuses existing voting permissions. No introduced authorization bypass was established. Remaining risk concerns platform-specific lifecycle behavior, particularly cleanup during shutdown, which has not been demonstrated on a live server.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The reviewed feature's authority is confined to one plugin server: authorized administrators manage up to 64 definitions across its worlds and a fixed file in its data directory, while ordinary players receive an additional entry to the existing voting menu. The inspected path adds no direct vote-accounting, reward or remote-service authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No introduced authorization bypass was established in the inspected interaction path. Player clicks must identify an exact tracked NPC; delayed execution rechecks player presence, world, distance and current NPC state before invoking the same URL handler used by normal voting. Enforcement inside the external command-handler dependency remains outside the inspected source.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Entity protection is keyed by exact runtime UUID rather than villager type or display name. Cancelled and off-hand interactions do not open the menu, and click admission is bounded and throttled. Unrelated entities are outside these handlers' ownership checks.
  • observed — The storage boundary validates bounded input, rejects symbolic-link definition files, opens the lease without following links, and holds an exclusive file lock through worker drain. Saves stage and force data before atomic replacement; failures after publication fence subsequent mutations until a valid reload.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Failure containment favors retained ownership over unsafe cleanup or duplicate reconstruction. Creation verifies ownership of the occupied bounds, cleanup follows the actual entity, and scheduler rejection is not treated as successful removal. Recovery depends on subsequent lifecycle notifications or reconciliation while the manager remains active.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before broad enablement, validate the documented lifecycle on actual supported Paper/Folia versions, including region-boundary creation, rejected cleanup, configuration disable/re-enable and final shutdown followed by restart. Treat this as deployment validation, not evidence of a verified vulnerability.

P2 Badge Cancel targeting when the NPC is the target

When a hostile mob targets one of these villagers, event.getEntity() is the hostile mob and the owned NPC is returned by event.getTarget(), so this condition remains false and the targeting proceeds. This defeats the documented targeting protection and can leave zombies or other mobs permanently attacking the invulnerable NPC; check whether the target is owned as well.

P2 Badge Make the NPC permission pass the /av command gate

A non-op granted only VotingPlugin.Commands.AdminVote.NPC cannot use these commands: VotingPluginMain.registerCommands() assigns the existing root permission VotingPlugin.Commands.AdminVote to both /av and /adminvote, so Bukkit rejects the command before the new handler's leaf-or-admin check runs. The same applies to a sender granted only the advertised VotingPlugin.Admin override; either wire the permissions through the root gate or document and declare the additional required permission.

P2 Badge Retire NPCs when any occupied chunk unloads

When an NPC is within 0.5 blocks of a chunk boundary, loadedArea requires both the anchor chunk and the adjacent chunk containing its bounds to be loaded, but this handler only records and reacts to unloading the definition's anchor chunk. If that adjacent chunk unloads while the anchor remains loaded, the NPC stays active even though its original spawn/ownership invariant is no longer satisfied, particularly affecting Paper/Folia boundary positions. Match unloads against the same surrounding chunks checked during creation and retire every affected NPC.

P2 Badge Retry cleanup before deferring reconstruction

When entity cleanup is transiently rejected during a chunk unload or configuration disable, cleanupFailed retains a closed RuntimeNPC and resets cleanupQueued; on the next chunk load or reload, this branch merely sets reconstructRequested and never calls retire again. The slot therefore remains permanently in cleanup pending and the configured NPC cannot return until a full plugin restart, so retry cleanup for a closed predecessor before deferring reconstruction.

P2 Badge Reconcile definitions after releasing a runtime slot

When all 64 runtime slots are occupied, removing one NPC and immediately creating another with a different ID can leave the new definition dormant: the retired NPC still reserves its slot while cleanup is pending, so this check skips the new NPC, and forget only schedules reconstruction for the retired NPC's own ID. Once cleanup releases the slot, nothing retries the new definition unless a later mutation, reload, or relevant chunk event happens, even though its area is already loaded; trigger a general reconcile when cleanup frees capacity.

P1 Badge Add a legacy scheduler fallback for non-Folia servers

On ordinary Spigot/Paper, getFoliaLib() is null—the existing BukkitCompletionScheduler, VoteShopPurchaseService, and SharedMysqlPointMutator explicitly handle that legacy case—but every successful registry load or mutation reaches this unconditional dereference through reconcile(). The resulting exception is caught and merely reported, so definitions created in already-loaded chunks never spawn, and storage-worker-triggered removal cannot clean up live NPCs. Route these operations through the normal Bukkit scheduler when the Folia adapter is absent.

The current packaged dependency constructs FoliaLib unconditionally in BukkitScheduler’s constructor, including the Spigot/Paper path. The exact PR JAR was checked. Defensive null checks in sibling callers do not establish that this adapter is normally absent. Which supported server/runtime path leaves getFoliaLib() null after successful construction? I have preserved the current implementation pending a reproducible path.
