fix(engine): 401, not 500, when an agent route's auth result has no agent - #583
POST /v1/agents/:name/rotate-token (requireAgentToken) read c.get('agent')!. The auth provider is a host seam, and the hosted gateway's KV cache answered any rk_live_ workspace key with its cached workspace-only result regardless of require. The handler then ran with no agent and threw: ~25.9k 500s/day in prod, from an outdated SDK that rotates with the workspace key after a 409 and retries on 500.
Fix
middleware/auth.ts: after a successful authenticate, a require: 'agent' | 'node' | 'observer' route whose result lacks that principal answers 401 unauthorized with the standard "… token required" message. This covers every single-principal route against any custom provider, not just rotate-token.
routes/workspace.ts: rotate-token no longer asserts c.get('agent')!; it 401s if the agent is missing.
Changelogs: Unreleased - Patch.
The hosted cache is fixed on its own side in AgentWorkforce/relaycast-cloud (the cache now answers only workspace/any/sender). This PR makes the engine safe regardless of the provider.
Tests
New conformance/authRequiredPrincipal.test.ts: a provider that returns a workspace-only result gets a 401 from rotate-token (it returns 500 without this fix; either guard alone makes it pass), and a real agent token still rotates.
Engine typecheck is clean; the full suite passes (1,519 tests).
…cipal
A host auth provider may answer a workspace key with a workspace-only
result whatever `require` asked for. The hosted gateway's cache did, so
POST /v1/agents/:name/rotate-token ran with no agent and dereferenced it
into a 500 (~26k/day from an outdated client retrying on 500).
The auth middleware now answers 401 when a require:'agent'/'node'/
'observer' route gets a result without that principal, and the
rotate-token handler no longer asserts the agent exists.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Authentication middleware now rejects results that lack a required agent, node, or observer principal. The agent token-rotation route also returns 401 when no agent is present. Conformance tests cover missing and valid agent principals.
Middleware checks for the principal required by single-kind authentication and returns 401 when it is missing. The agent token-rotation route also returns 401 if no agent is present. Conformance tests cover workspace-key rejection and successful rotation with an agent token. Both changelogs document the patch.
The authentication fix has a remaining documentation requirement. Update both API documents before merging, or accept that follow-up explicitly.

🟡 New authentication response lacks required docs
When a host returns a workspace-only result, requireAgentToken now answers 401 instead of 500. The README and OpenAPI schema remain unchanged despite the repository's paired-update rule.
Learn more
The new response is user-visible on hosted deployments with a provider that returns a workspace-only result for an agent route. The rotation endpoint lists only a 200 response, and the README does not describe its new failure response. The repository's documentation rule requires changing README.md and openapi.yaml together for API behavior changes.
Example: A workspace key presented to the rotation endpoint now receives 401 when the host provider returns a workspace-only result, rather than the previous 500. The API schema does not list that 401 response.
Recommended fix: Document the 401 response for agent-token routes in openapi.yaml and update the corresponding authentication guidance in README.md together.

### Issue 1
packages/engine/src/middleware/auth.ts:60-63
The new guard returns `401` when the required identity is missing, but neither `README.md` nor `openapi.yaml` is updated. The repository requires: “Update `README.md` and `openapi.yaml` together when API behavior changes.” Document this response in both files before merging.

### Issue 2
packages/engine/CHANGELOG.md:undefined-15
The release note says missing observer identities now produce a 401, but the observer path uses `requireWorkspaceRead`, which never calls `missingPrincipal`. If a provider returns a successful workspace-only result for an observer token, that path still continues without `observerToken`. Hosts could rely on protection this release does not provide. Remove the observer claim unless that path is also guarded.
```suggestion- Routes that require an agent or node token now answer `401 unauthorized` when the auth provider returns a result without that principal. Previously a host provider that answered a workspace key with a workspace-only result (for example from a cache) sent `POST /v1/agents/:name/rotate-token` into its handler with no agent, which failed with a 500.```---
For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.
Summary
Adds checks so agent and node routes reject successful authentication results that lack the required identity.
Routes requiring one identity reject auth results without it.
Update README.md and openapi.yaml for this API behavior change.
The missing-principal branch changes the API response from 500 to 401. AGENTS.md:34 requires both documents to be updated together when API behavior changes. Add the corresponding documentation updates in this PR.
