Summary

The homepage hero sits over a faint, living log of agents talking to each other.

  • Agent chat (web/components/homepage/HeroGhostChat.tsx): a full-height field of faint monospace messages in columns. Each message opens with its sender's 11px monochrome mark, mostly the Claude Code mascot and the OpenAI mark, with Gemini, Copilot, OpenCode, Cursor, Grok, Hermes and Muse now and then. Messages are backspaced and retyped all over the field, a few at a time. Some span 2–4 rows, and about half the replies are familiar assistant-isms ("you're absolutely right", "let me delve into this", …). Text near the cursor brightens.
  • Halftone field (web/components/homepage/HeroHalftone.tsx): on about 1 in 10 page loads, a breathing dot grid replaces the chat. Message pulses route along rows and turn down columns, and the dots spring out of the way around the cursor.
  • HeroBackdrop picks between them after mount, so the server render and hydration agree.
  • Homepage wash: a flat vertical fade with no radial highlight, so nothing competes with the backdrop.
  • Shared marks: AGENT_TOOL_MARKS (AgentToolLogos.tsx) and BRAND_MARK_PATHS (brand-icons.tsx) export the marks' path data, and the SVG logos render from it. The canvas draws the same marks the rest of the site shows.
  • Byte stream removed: the byte-stream backdrop (HeroStream) is gone.
  • Behaviour common to both backdrops: they're masked at the edges and behind the copy, and pause when off screen or in a hidden tab. prefers-reduced-motion gives a still frame and is followed live. They have no glow, blur or shadow.

Verification

  • tsc --noEmit clean; vitest run: 631 passed.
  • The homepage renders the backdrop canvas with no console or hydration errors.
  • Both backdrops were reviewed in the browser during exploration.

Summary by cubic

Replaces the homepage hero's falling byte stream with a faint, full-height log of agents messaging each other, and on about one in ten page loads a breathing halftone dot field where message pulses travel along rows and columns and dots part around the cursor.

The two backdrops

  • HeroGhostChat types, backspaces, and retypes single- and multi-line messages in columns, each headed by its sender's mark, with text near the cursor brightening.
  • HeroHalftone shows a breathing dot grid where bits of traffic bump along and drain into their destination, and dots spring away from the cursor and ease back.
  • HeroBackdrop picks between them after mount and renders nothing until then, so only the chosen backdrop mounts and the server render agrees with hydration.
  • Agent and brand marks now export their path data (AGENT_TOOL_MARKS, BRAND_MARK_PATHS) so the canvas draws the same logos the rest of the site renders.
  • The hero wash is now a flat vertical fade with no radial highlight.
  • Both backdrop canvases are masked at edges and behind the copy, pause off screen or in a hidden tab, follow prefers-reduced-motion live, and use no glow, blur, or shadow.

The hero sits over a faint, full-height log of agents messaging each
other: each message opens with its sender's mark (mostly Claude Code and
Codex), and messages are backspaced and retyped all over the field, with
plenty of familiar assistant-isms. About one page load in ten gets a
halftone dot field instead, where message pulses route along rows and
columns and the dots part around the cursor.

The homepage wash drops its radial highlight so nothing competes with
the backdrop. Tool and brand marks export their path data so the canvas
draws the same marks the rest of the site renders.

📝 Walkthrough

The homepage hero replaces its falling-hex animation with a chat canvas or a halftone canvas selected after mount. The change adds reusable brand path maps and updates the landing page’s hero styling.

Changes: Homepage Hero Backdrop

Layer / File(s) Summary
Brand path data
web/components/AgentToolLogos.tsx, web/components/brand-icons.tsx
Agent logo components now read paths from AGENT_TOOL_MARKS. BRAND_MARK_PATHS maps seven mono brand names to SVG path arrays.
Chat canvas backdrop
web/components/homepage/HeroGhostChat.tsx
Adds a responsive animated chat field with agent messages, typing and replacement states, cursor brightness, and reduced-motion and visibility handling.
Halftone canvas backdrop
web/components/homepage/HeroHalftone.tsx
Adds a breathing dot grid with pulse trails and mouse-driven displacement. The canvas handles reduced motion, visibility, resizing, and cleanup.
Hero backdrop selection and page styling
web/components/homepage/HeroBackdrop.tsx, web/components/homepage/HeroStream.tsx, web/components/homepage/HomeHero.tsx, web/components/homepage/HomePage.tsx, web/app/landing.module.css
HeroBackdrop initially renders chat and selects halftone after mount when a random value is below 0.1. HomeHero uses the new component, the old stream is removed, and the landing page receives the new backdrop styles and gradient.

Some halftone loads do unnecessary backdrop work and may briefly show the chat backdrop. This is a bounded visual concern, so the change is mergeable with owner awareness.

A rabbit watched the hero glow,
As chat lines typed and dots would flow.
A halftone pulse crossed the screen,
While brand marks kept their paths serene.
“New canvas scenes!” the rabbit cheered,
Then hopped through pixels, whiskers cleared.

  • A visitor can select the real-time team coordination feature: HomePage.tsx and landing.module.css changes warrant homepage feature interaction regression.

17-23: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Avoid mounting HeroGhostChat on the 10% of loads that switch to HeroHalftone.

HeroBackdrop renders HeroGhostChat first and swaps it after mount. The comment says both canvases start blank. This is not true for reduced motion.

With prefers-reduced-motion: reduce, play() in HeroGhostChat calls step(performance.now()) synchronously inside its effect. That call draws a full still field. The child effect runs before the setHalftone call in the HeroBackdrop effect. The swap then happens in a later render. On the halftone loads, the browser can paint the chat field for a frame before HeroHalftone replaces it.

Without reduced motion, the chat mounts, runs layout(), then unmounts. This is wasted work.

Render nothing until the choice is made. The server render and hydration still agree, because both render null.

♻️ Proposed change
-  const [halftone, setHalftone] = useState(false);
+  const [halftone, setHalftone] = useState<boolean | null>(null);

   useEffect(() => {
     setHalftone(Math.random() < HALFTONE_SHARE);
   }, []);

-  return halftone ? <HeroHalftone /> : <HeroGhostChat />;
+  if (halftone === null) return null;
+  return halftone ? <HeroHalftone /> : <HeroGhostChat />;

HeroBackdrop renders nothing until it has picked, so a halftone load
never mounts (or, under reduced motion, paints) the agent chat first.
